Experience and opinions of anyone that has or had the Mirena IUD placed. I have an appointment tomorrow and am just looking for personal experience from others. Thank you.

What can I do next?

I found it to be extrememly uncomfortable when they placed it. LIKE SERIOUSLY UNCOMFORTABLE! Hated it.
But then I really like having sex for 5 years without having to worry about contraception with my husband, so I got it placed again.
And it sucked worse.
BUT...it just sucked for a day.
SO...I recomend it. Just take some IBprofin (which didn't help me at all, btw) because apparently it's supposed to help. Breathe through it. THen have crazy monkey sex!

I had absolutely no problems with my IUD, only had it removed because it had been implanted for 8 years and I was worried about it being in there so long. Dr. said it was in good condition when it was removed and I returned back to normal periods within the next month. Joy.

I'm now looking into ablation. 8 years without a period showed me what an unnecessary pain they are when you are past the years of conception.

Crampy for about 24 hours (less painful than a normal period for me), so have some tylenol or motrin on hand, whatever you prefer. I had spotting for several months after - which was annoying (think pantyliner every day) but not terrible. Once I got through that, it has been so worth it. I do still get periods, but they are very short and very light (pantyliner light spotting for 2 days is a period for me now). I'm on year 6 now - just had it replaced with a new one because it's perfect for me.

I had it for about a week. Placement was easy, and mostly painless for me. But it "slipped out of place" in my uterus, and then I freaked out not knowing if it was still effective as it was. (It was, according to the company).
But insertion and removal was easy.

I am on my second.

I had to be put under (in OR) because I have a medical condition that makes me kind of faint. But typically it's very simple to insert. And I have sisters and friends on it and it was easy.

I had mine for 5 years, then you replace. It makes your periods almost disappear. At the most, I get spotting. I've never had cramping. Towards the end coming up to 5 years, my spotting lasted longer - so that can happen when it's time for a new one.

I never had side effects. One of the reasons I am on it was for migraines. I'm not sure if it helped that so much. But I also had heavy periods, and felt very run down from them. So that made a big difference.

My experience was fairly typical and easy, until I realized the Mirena was causing me five years of debilitating lower back pain. Just be aware that it can cause SI Joint pain and have it removed if you have that complication. I had no idea it was causing my pain until I went to go get a new one and did some research before my appointment. I had it removed and the pain disappeared. This was horrendous back pain each time I moved or bent over for five years straight. I thought it was all due to childbirth, but my son's birth seemed fine, so I was very confused and thought I'd be disabled for life since nothing seemed to help. I try to get the word out, since I had no idea others had the same problem. Not once did any doctor suggest it could be caused by the Mirena. Thank goodness for the internet and research!

I've had mine for almost four years. I will say that the first 2-3 weeks were hard - very crampy and uncomfortable. But then suddenly the cramping stopped and everything was fine. I haven't had any issues since - it's been great. So I would recommend it and I'd say to give it some time even if it feels uncomfortable at first. Good luck!

I'm on my third! I love it! It will cause a little discomfort similar to cramps. Take ibuprofen an hour before you get there - it will make a difference. Ask about the strings - they may need to be cut. My husband could feel the strings with the first one. I have had absolutely no side effects. I have not had a period in over 13 years. There are some that will tell you it was a nightmare for them. The Mirena, just like any other birth control, is not for everyone. I hope it works out for you. It is the best thing I have ever done for myself aside from getting my deviated septum fixed. Good luck!
