I am on my 2nd IUD (had 1st one for 5 years and now have had the 2nd one for a year). After the initial spotting with both of them, I have completely stopped getting my period.
Hi, I've had mine for about 18 months now. It's still in place and everything seems dandy. I was getting my period every month. Half the time twice a month! Every 15 days I'd get a new cycle. Well today I sit on 11 days past my average cycle length of 30 days. Pretty substantial. I took a preg test and it was negative. That's great considering I'm on meds you can't be pregnant on.
But here is my question does anyone have it and actually lose their period? I know some say it's a side effect but my doctor said he'd never really seen anyone's go away... it just might become a day of spotting. But nothing for 11 days too long is worrying me.
Like I said I POAS and it was negative and I can't get pregnant because of my meds so I'm just starting to wonder.
Thanks ladies. I think I'll give it another week and if still no period do another test. That way i'm more safe. I would feel terrible to get pregnant and have to lose the baby. :(
I am on my 2nd IUD (had 1st one for 5 years and now have had the 2nd one for a year). After the initial spotting with both of them, I have completely stopped getting my period.
I also had mine for 4 years. No periods. Ever. Then, out of the blue, I had a rather large period. I was pretty unprepared.LOL! Then, 3 months later, I started feeling....weird. Since hubby and I are extremely fertile, I took a pregnancy test because, I too, was on meds you shouldn't be pregnant with. It was positive. Turns out, the IUD was very embedded in the uterine tissue. The pregnancy wasn't viable, and I had to have a D&C. Looking back, I think the out-of-the-blue period, was actually the IUD embedding, or a miscarriage. If I were you, I would take another pregnancy test in a couple days, just to be sure. My hpt was a very faint line. The urine test at the OBGYN didn't even detect it. A blood test did, but the hcg levels never came up.
Good luck!
I did not get my period for 4 years on the mirena.
I have been on Mirena for about 5 1/2 months and have had some spotting a couple of months and NO PERIOD for other months. YEAH!
Yes, me. The first year I had it I was nursing and no period, when my period returned it was wonky for about 6 months (maybe longer), then regular for a few months and at the end of year two it went away not to be seen again. I get some very light spotting every now and the (about every two months or so), but it's not even enough to use a pad, pantyliner works just fine.
I love it and will definitely get another one next year when it's time to get it replaced.
I stopped getting mine almost right away and then went 4 years without one at all. No spotting or anything
I must be reading the new questions too late. It soulds like you have your mind made up. I am actually on my 2nd Mirena, so I've been using it for years.
Mine was put in because my period never stopped. For over a year, it would go from some lighter days to day that I thought I might have to go to the hospital. But, I was a smoker so I couldn't use the pill.
I was surprised how much my period did slow down; and yes, it does stop at times. I was spotting for a couple of days during my cycle time, but there were months that I totally missed even the spotting. There were times I could go 3 months with nothing -- no spotting at all.
I'm guessing from your response to the other ladies that nobody's has stopped. I was also told it might not actually stop, but ... Maybe I was just one of the luckier ones, but there are plenty of times I have gone more that 60 days.
Hope this gives you a different light on your problem / anxiety.
Hi! I have had mine for about a yr. Up until just recently I was getting my period every month or so (very light)...two of my friends had the same IUD and they had their period once, and then it went away completely...which is actually what my OBGYN said would most likely happen. Like anything, we are all different, and I wouldn't worry if you don't get your period, as it can happen. Don't you love it though?!
I have had the Mirena IUD for 3 years and only get a period after a really stressful month. Even then I only have a very light period for a few days.
Do you have OTHER period symptoms just no bleeding, or none at all?
I've had Mirena in since 2007. For the first year or so I kind of had light spotting, sometimes when I expected a period, sometimes between... usually only for a couple of days... or even one day.
Now I don't get a "period" at all. Since it doesn't interfere with ovulation, I am usually still pretty aware of where I am in my cycle... and sometimes get a little PMSy, but other than that, it's smooth sailing around here :)
Remember that the reason Mirena changes your period is NOT because it's changing your cycle, but because it thins your uterine lining. In the beginning you were bleeding MORE often, so at this point, you may not have much there to "slough" off. It could just be that your body is starting to transition away from monthly bleeding. Weird, I know, but you'll get used to the bloodless period.

I got my Mirena in May of this year and my doc said most women will stop having periods with it. I think he said there is typically more bleeding for the first few months, but somewhere between 6 and 12 months most women stop having a period at all.
