I had a baby 8 weeks ago, and am now considering different birth controls. I am mostly interested in Mirena (IUD,) since I am horrible at taking the pill everyday. Does anyone have any experience with an IUD? Or, just any suggestions for birth control. What works for you? My husband and I agree that we are happy with just two kids, but don't necessarily want to have any surgeries to make it final. Thanks in advance!
I had mine placed September 2006 and just had some slight cramping. My husband complained that he could feel it and when I went for a follow-up with my doctor, she saw that it was literally out of place and my body was trying to expell it. I was always "aware" of it, and thought it was annoying but had no idea it was actually falling out! My doctor ordered a free replacement and i had it re-inserted in December 2006. I always felt like it just wasn't "right" and although I liked not having periods, I ended up having it removed in May 2007. I only used the IUD because I was breastfeeding, but I will never use it again and would recommend the NuvaRing instead. Not everyone has the problem I did, and I would suggest you try it and see how it works for you. There are more pros than cons! :)

Hi
I had the IUD put in back in May 07, from May until October -November I had my periord on and off... one week I had it the next week it went away... weird, but it was light. Now all that time I also had acne on my forhead ( just a few pimples), not horrible but for someone who has never got pimples before it was alarming. I went to the doctor and he told me to give it some time since everyone is different. Periods are normal and light (love it) acne seems as it's slowly going away.
Each body is different, so I can only share my experience.
Good luck!

Hello,
I assume you mean the Mirena? I had it inserted about a year ago and within a month I started having terrible mood swings which got so bad I was looking up Bipolar symptoms! On top of that, I had a headache all the time, joint pain, and I could compare the terrible exhaustion to that of the 1st trimester of pregnancy. I didn't attribute the issues I had to the Mirena until I had been to the Dr. 3x over a 7 month span and they finally pinpointed what was causing my issues. I had it removed and within 3 days everything went away. I chose the Paragard IUD instead which has no hormones and I love it. For the 1st 2-3 months my periods were heavier but nothing that was unbearable. They have since became more normal. I highly recommend the paragard if you're thinking of going the IUD route. Good luck to you!

You have had a lot of responses already so I'll just go on and throw my 2cents in here too.
I have the non-hormonal IUD and love it. I picked it because A)It's referred to as 'reversible sterilization'
B)It's non-hormonal, I didn't like what the pill did to me so I didn't want to go w/ a hormonal contraceptive.
C)You have a 66% chance to get pregnant your first cycle after getting it taken out and then it goes up to 96% (I believe) or what ever the normal % for having used no birth control. Unlike w/ hormonal BC's where you may have to wait up to a year or LONGER for your body to balance out if you want to get pregnant again. GL, God bless and I hope you find something that works for you.

I don't really know about the Mirena but I had the old kind from back in the 70's they had different styles one was s shaped. That was my first but my body pushed it right out. Very uncomfortable. Then they put one in shaped like a 7 and it had copper around it. The copper robbed your boby from something )I don't recall what it was) and it helped you not get pregnant. Well it was suppose to be replaced every 2 years no one told me. I got preggers and lost the baby. I also could feel the darb thing inside also and this is personal but it had a tail that you would use to make sure it was inside. It was like fishing line and it would poke the hubby during sex and poke me after sex. I hated it. They had to remove it when I lost the baby and that was fine with me by then I was ready for another which took me 4 more years. My boys are 7.5 years apart. With the issues od the IUD I chose to have my tubes tied. I was also diabetic by then and did not want to have to go through all the trouble I had having my youngest child.

I had the Mirena after my third child nearly 5 years ago. I absolutely loved it. Aside from some cramping on the day it was inserted, I had no issues whatsoever. No periods, mood swings, headaches..nothing. That being said....I also got pregnant on it. It had gotten wrapped up in my uterine tissue. I had to have is surgically removed and the pregnancy wasn't viable. As all this was happening, the Dr's office was in shock because as long as they had been using this and taking care of women with it, they'd never had anyone have that happen. I believe it is a very uncommon thing. The nurses, lab, staff, etc. were all freaking because as one nurse put it, "90% of us have the Mirena". I didn't have an issue with the expense, either, because my insurance paid for some of it(and this was 5 years ago) So, I guess if you really think the pill would be too hard to remember, the Mirena is worth a try???? Unfortunately, it may be a trial and error sort of thing.

Hello, I absolutely love the Mirena. I was horrible about taking the pill. I have had the mirena for about 1yr. I have had slight spotting from time to time, but nothing to consider saying that I have had a period. Good luck.

I have it and LOVE it... but... when I 1st got it (March 25, 2008) I HATED it... I had a lot of spotting that lasted for over a month, which was annoying since I had just stopped bleeding from having my son, and I had a lot of cramps.... BUT.. if you can get past the 1st few months of annoyances and discomfort, it is totally worth it....
I dont have periods anymore, and IF I do, it is just a tiny spot of blood once when I wipe...
good luck with whatever you decide... and remember, everyone is different! Congrats on the baby!

I too am horrible about taking pills, but I didn't want to go with an IUD either. My doctor suggested the patch (ortho evra), and it has been the best compromise I can find because you only have to worry about replacing it once a week - much better than remembering to take a pill everyday! And it stays on all week too, even if you are swimming or working out.
Hope that helps!

I had the Parguard IUD for about 4 years. Had no problems. It can be interesting trying to find the string, but neither my husband or me noticed it during sex. I will say it was uncomfortable when it came time to take the IUD out, but I didn't notice any heavier periods or anything. Of course I got mine at my 6 week check-up and since i was BF didn't have a period for months after. I will say my sister used the patch, and now has child #4. She had problems remembering when to change the patch. ONe week it would be sunday, then she forgot, so it would be tuesday the next week, etc. You can see where her problem came. SO if remembering is a problem, anytime you have to change it can be a problem.

My husband, who is an OB/GYN, suggested the Mirena after my son was born, and I'm so glad he did. I had a little light bleeding after it was inserted and some cramping, but since then, I haven't had a period at all, and that's been about 2 years ago or so! We plan on having another baby some time in the next couple of years, and I'm so glad that we can decide when to start trying by just removing the IUD. It is not for everyone, so you'll need to speak to your doctor before having it inserted, but from what I've heard, many women who've had it really are glad they made that decision. Good luck!

I have had my Mirena since August of 07.....LOVE IT!!! Little to no periods, no headaches, no mood swings. If I had it to do all over again I would in a heart beat! I wish they would have offered it to me after my first child because baby #2 came a little too early. I was on NUVA Ring when I got pregnant with baby #2.

I also have the Mirena IUD. I've had it since September, and I love it. My experience is the exact opposite of the woman who said it caused mood swings and headaches. I had terrible mood swings and Migraines (and acne) when I was on the pill, but those things all went away after I got the Mirena. I had some light spotting for the first 2 months, but that's it.
It's wonderful to not have to think about birth control every single day. I always say "This must be what it's like to be a guy!"

If your insurance will cover it, the Mirena is great. I have had it since my son was 3 months old and I have had very little bleeding or cramping (which were quite bad before I had my son). This isn't true for everyone that has one but it was for me. The IUD costs about $500.00 but they stay in for 5-10 years and my insurance paid it all. I would recommend Mirena. Plus, if you decide to have another baby, just take it out and you are good to go!

Just be careful what ever you choose. I am not sure if I commented on this already but I just want to let you know that my sister in law had the iud puncture her unterus during insertion. They say it doesn't happen often, like 1 in 100 woman have that problem. She went ahead and got it again though. My Mirena IUD punctured my uterus within the first month. my string was getting shorter and shorter. I complained to the obgyn and they did 2 different ultra sounds over two months. My family doctor kept treating me for bladder infections until they even sent me to an urologist! Then I went back to my family dr who thought it was kidney stones and they did a ct scan only to see that the IUD punctured my uterus. It cost me nothing to get the IUD in and $4000 to have emergency surgery to have it removed!

Hi K., I got the Merina IUD right about the same time as you and LOVE it. I was horrible at taking the pill and know that I may want more children...but not for at least several (3) years. Getting it post-partum as you are, it is very painless. For the first 6 months or so, I spotted, never a lot but enough to be a nuisance, but now my periods are MUCH lighter than they were before. I have had no problems with it and love not having to worry about a pill everday. I'm not sure what the difference is between the one you mentioned and the Merinia...but I would highly recomend it. Hope this helps.

i had an implant put into my arm and i love it. i was horrible at taking the pill too, and have tried everything from the patch to the neuva ring. i didn't like any of them. but the implanon implant just goes on the inside of your arm and the doc puts it in at the office. it's really easy. afterwards there is some itching and a little pain just as the skin streches and gets used to the implant, but after that i didn't even think about it. it work for 3 years. i would ask your doc about that. it works for me

I have had Mirena since September of 2007. I have no problems with it other than my period being a little odd the first couple of months. Now like clockwork on the 24th or 25th of each month I have a LIGHT period that lasts about 3 months.
For me it is totally worth it... I am a person who has a history of completely unpredictable periods that would be super heavy and last 7-13 days...
It has been wonderful for me. Although like other posts said-- some people have had problems with it. I've been lucky.

I plan on doing the same thing after I have my baby in June. I had the Paragard IUD prior to getting pregnant and I loved it. The first few days I had some mild cramping like when you are having your period. Then my first few periods were a lot heavier than usual. After that, I didn't even know it was there. It really is a good decision to have one in. I hope this helps.

I got Mirena after my second child and the first few weeks I did have headaches, and spotted for almost 6 weeks. But now 6 months later I've had no problems, and my periods are much shorter, lighter, and no cramps which is great!! And I also am not good at remembering to take a pill, nor did I want to do the monthly ring etc. Everyone is different and honestly until you try it you wont really know what will happen. I dont however recommend it if you are a nursing mom!

I personally have not used the IUD but I do use the Nuva Ring. I am very satisfied with it. My dr recommended it because I am so forgetful with the pill, like you are! I only have to remember to take it out/insert new one once a month. It comes with stickers too to put on your calendar. I do not have any side effects with it and in fact, my periods are very light, which is wonderful.
Hope this helps.

I just got the Mirena back in December...I have to say at first I actually was quite annoyed b/c I was bleeding for 2 weeks straight. January was a little better but now (early Feb) the spotting has really gone down. It was nothing to get it in so right now I am a believer. I really like the fact that I don't have to worry about taking the pill every day and most likely would forget. I also like that we can have it removed at any time and have another baby if we should so decide to do that...we have three under the age of 4 so right now that is NOT happening!! Good luck with whatever you decide!

I had the Mirena implanted about 4 months ago and so far, it has been pretty good. There was a lot of cramping at first, but now I practically don't have a period. I have had some back pain during my normal period time, but no real bleeding. I am overall pretty happy with it and would recommend it.
My husband at first complained that he could feel the wires, so they had to be cut shorter, but I guess that happens a lot and is no big deal. It was really worth it for us, since it only cost us the 20 dollar copay to have it put in and then that was it! No monthly pill cost or anything! And not having a period has been pretty awesome!

I would be curious to hear the responses to this. I am in a similar boat and we are trying to decide what to do. I am nursing right now so I am on a birth control that I can take as long as I am nursing. But my son is 9mo. and I plan to stop around 1 yr. We aren't sure we want to do something permanent. I have heard that the IUD is expensive, but used for at least 2 years, becomes comparable in price to birth control pills. I like the idea that you don't get all the extra hormones with the IUD. Anyway, good luck!

I was just talking to my sister about this, she has had an IUD most of her adult life. She says the trick is getting one with progesterone. It costs about 900.oo, but she gets a discount if she pays cash at her visit drops down to 600.00. Hopefully you have insurance that covers it. She said it cuts down on every pms symptom you have, and is worth every penny. I dont know if it is mirena. Hope this helps. She has only had one child who is 11 now. I was on the pill and had child # 2 and went to the shots, hence child # 3 . Best of luck to you.

I am on my second Mirena - I love it so much. I had one after my daughter and kept it in for three years. Took it out and got pregnant with my son. Then got another one and have had it for over two years. The best part (yet scary at times) is that I dont have a period. It is wonderful because I dont have to worry about taking a pill and it lasts 5 years (although my doctor said it would really last for 6 but they just say 5 to be sure). I figure it gives me time to decide if I want any more children. I actually think at the end of 5 years I will get another one. I love it!
