Microcephaly

Hello Moms!

On December 9, 2011, I gave birth to two beauiful baby girls. I was pregnant with triplets and at 20 weeks lost one. She was an identical. When Baby B passed away it caused Baby A to have severe anemia, to the point that we almost lost her also. We were in the hospital because the doctor thought he would have to do a fetal blood transfusion, but miraculously Baby A's anemia started to improve on it's own. After that happened, through the ultra sound we noticed that there were darkened spots on her brain, and doctors believe she had a stroke. Her brain also stopped growing for two weeks while she was in the womb. It's been a journey to say the very least!

Now that she is in the world, the doctors have currently diagnosed her with Microcephaly. Her head circ is about two smaller than her sisters (who has a "normal" size head). Baby A is meeting ALL of her milestones (with the exception of head circ), and appears to be just fine to me. She is perfect in my eyes:) We will be going to have testing done on her at a children's hospital in May. When I research Microcephaly it scares me to death. I have yet to read anything optimistic about the condition. I am just curious if any moms out there can give me any reassuring advice or share their stories about their children born with small heads. The worry is just making me sick! Thanks everyone!

STOP researching it, you'll drive yourself sick with worry for nothing.

Medicine has grown by leaps and bounds the past few decades. Babies are resilient!! Just stick with what HER DOCTOR tells you, and weigh all the options before making decisions about how to move forward with this.

I bet she surprises you. I bet by the time the girls are 4, you'll never know that anything worried you to begin with, and you'll feel silly for wasting your energy worrying instead of spoiling them rotten!! :)

Hi there,

It can be scary when you are faced with the unknown. I think it would be a good starting place to contact the Parent Training and Information Center for MO. They can help you connect with other parents and answer many of your questions. Good luck!
