Messes in Pants

My 5 year old daughter started having what she calls "wet toots" in her pants. It is actually more than a we toot. I thought she starting doing this because she didn't want to take any time out to go potty because she didn't want to miss anything. I thought she would grow out of it. She has been doing it for about 3 months and it is happening more and more. It has never happened in kindergarten. It happens when we are at home, at friends, or shopping with dad or me.
When she does actually sit on the potty and go everything is normal with no problems. I would appreciate any advice.

What can I do next?

My 7 year old still has to wear pullups at night, which I know is different, but my only suggestion would be to be patient with her. If parents get upset, it tends to make the problem worse and last longer! Hopefully she will out grow it soon for your sake!

Hi J.

Does she ever complain about her tummy hurting? If so, she maybe having "complications" due to bowl movement with holding. My DD went thru this last spring at the age of 4. They say "wet toots" happen due to there being a build up of stool in her intestines plus gas, so what happens is the "wet" bowl matter will slip out during a moment she passes gas. I know this sounds kind of gross, but it is something a lot of children do. I sugest going to her ped. and mention what is going on. Our ped took an x-ray and showed me where the stool and gas was all built up in DD belly. To help regulate her again, she had to take a perscription stool softener/laxative. It took about 2 months and now DD is fine again. You just need to stress to her how important it is to stop and go to the bathroom when she feels the urge to go.

Let me know if you have any other questions, I hope this helps.
Chris

She maybe holding it when at school, and then just has to go so badly that it "leaks" even without the urge to go poop.

Talk to her Teacher, and make sure she is getting adequate potty breaks and TIME in the potty. I know at my Son's school the K class only gets 1 scheduled potty break mid-morning, My son started having accidents because he needed to go for a sit down potty break just prior to closing activities, but he couldn't express that well enough. He'd say I have to go Potty, and his teacher assistant would just take him expecting only pee, so he didn't really have enough time to poo.

If your daughter doesn't have any issues with her bowls and the doctor says she is okay, I would try taking away her undies. That is how my cousin got her daughter to quit going in her pants. When there is nothing there to hold the poop and it runs down the leg.ewww. She stopped right away. GOOD LUCK!!
