Hi -it looks like our relocation is going to be to Memphis. Since it's been about 25 years since I've been there I really need some input about the area - housing, schools, pediatricians, etc. The last posting I found on Mammasource was from about 18 months ago - can anyone help me out? Thanks in advance for making the time to help another mom!!

What can I do next?

Having just moved here 4 years ago I would suggest moving where your children will be in a Shelby County School. We live in Memphis but our children attend Germantown schools and we love them. When we first moved here I had a child in each of their Elementary, Middle School and High School. I found them to be excellent schools with a wonderful staff and faculty.

We live at Lincoln on the Green apartments at this time largely due to sticker shock. We moved from a very small town in Texas and the housing prices in Germantown are steeper than we're accustomed to.

I don't have a pediatrician we've just taken them to a family doctor at the Forest Hill Family Practice. They are a good team of doctors and we're happy with them. I also use Dr. Laura Bishop for my OB/GYN.

I hope you find a good place to settle. Memphis seems to be in going through a lot right now and may have changed quite a bit in the last 25 years. Having moved from a town of less than 1000 to this has been an adjustment. Crime rate is high, corruption in government seems prevalent and there is talk of abandoning Memphis City Schools charter in order to become part of Shelby County Schools. But I still think that Memphis has a lot to offer and has the potential of being a great city.

I hope you find the transition a good one.

It depends on what kind of housing you can afford. Germantown is more expensive. Collierville is a little less. Arlington is growing like crazy. If you plan to move into Memphis City, make sure you are very careful as there are a lot issues in the schools. Many people opt to send their kids to private schools even some who used the county system depending on which county school they are zoned for. Many of the apartments and homes on the Memphis border (such as the ones mentioned by someone) will be annexed in Dec 2013. Make sure you do your homework on an area before you buy or things could drastically change.

I grew up in that area of town and I highly recommend the De Soto County, Mississippi (Southaven, Olive Branch, Hernando) area. It is a much safer, family friendly area. My sister is a teacher in the school system there and it is pretty good. If you are set on living on the TN side, I would look into Germantown or Collierville. Best of luck to you and your family.

It's been about 8 years since we lived in the Memphis area, but we loved our pediatrician, Dr. Chris Mathis at Pediatric Consultants. He had great rapport with kids and adults alike and seemed to be on top of things.

just from one transplant to another. you might want to jump over the boarder to southhaven or olive branch. both are very nice towns. but the crime etc. is so much better.. and you can be anywhere in memphis in a matter of min. we lived in southaven for about 4 years. the schools and churches were great. good luck with your move. finally back home, R.

Hi G., we moved to Memphis from Houston and settled in the Arlington area, we love it!!! Our pediatrician is ALL BETTER PEDIATRICS, Dr. Tamara Folz and Dr. Susan Welch are wonderful. Our daughter loves them, and we love the time they take with us. You really become a member of their family, rather than just a chart. The staff is also great and wonderful with the kids. You can reach them at ###-###-####, if you want to set up a time to talk with them and tour the office. Good Luck!

I live in the Bartlett/Arlington area and am very happy there. We made sure that we were not in Memphis proper or in what I call "Memphis yet to be" since Cordova is being annexed into the city a piece at a time. We use Pediatrics East and love them.
