There is a possibility that my husband and I could be relocating to the Memphis area in the near future and I wanted to get your advice regarding Memphis. We would like to live in a fairly new gated community, which we do now. Do you know of any? Which parts of Memphis are better to live in then others? In doing research, Collierville sounds like a wonderful place. Is it? How are the public schools in Memphis or do most people send their children to private schools? Any advice you can share whether it's positive or negative is greatly appreciated!

What can I do next?

Collierville is wonderful. I have a lot of friends out there. It is slowly growing. There are many new communities out there and the schools there are great. Germantown also is good. There is Farmington elementary that a lot of people are sending their children too. I would not advise the city schools but the county schools are good. Have you looked at Arlington? A lot of people are moving out there because of new housing developments and also because of the schools. It is only about 10-15 minutes from Memphis.

Germantown & Collierville are both great places to live. Arlington is a newer area that is growing & very nice. Riverdale Elementary, in Germantown, is a great school. There are a couple of good private schools as well - Central Day School & Evangelical Christian. There are a few gated areas, but they all range in price. There is one in Cordova at Woodland Hills ranging in the high 100's to mid 200's. It depends a lot of where your husbands work is - to keep the commute down. There are some great activities to do to meet other mom's as well - Little Gym, Kinder Musik, etc., as well as some great churches - Central Church, Hope Pres., Forest Hill Community, Heartsong... Best wishes. Hope the transition is smooth.

Sarah. I wrote the same thing about a month ago. I am living in Memphis/Germantown, and the major thing I can say is DO NOT SEND YOUR KIDS TO THE MEMPHIS CITY SCHOOLS. Seriously, they are really bad. Please look up my file, you will find all of the responses that I had. Most were really helpful. I would also tell you that Bartlett is really nice, the problem with Cordova is that they are up for another annexing of the schools, and those kids will be sent to Memphis schools. Germantown schools are ok, but I think they are way to military style. For example, there is no running on the play ground, no talking during lunch, and they are to be quiet in gym class. They also expect you to be available at all times, so if you plan on working when you get here be sure you have a flexible job if you choose Germantown. Good luck!

My husband and I are products of the Memphis City schools and we're sending our children to public schools. Everyone badmouths the public schools and I get tired of it. Yes, there are some really bad schools, but there are some diamonds in the rough too. We graduated from White Station and our children are attending Downtown Elementary. We're considering transfering to Grahamwood. If you're looking towards Collierville, I can't give an opinion on schools out that way. "Which part of Memphis is best" is a highly opinionated subject and the answer depends on who you ask. We live in Midtown and love it, but you're not going to find "new" and "gated" inside the 240 loop.

Collierville is a very nice area, and I think more along the lines of what you are looking for in a place to live. Public schools in Memphis are lacking. If I were you I would send my child to a private school, just because the public schools are so bad. However, the county schools aren't too bad, just the city schools. So being in Collierville would place you in the county, those schools are pretty good from what I understand.
