Thanks to all who had answered my previous question on flexible career .
I am hoping to join the medical secretary career ...I have been stay at home mom past 14 years ( I feel like a dinosaur !!) and have 4 years work experience in administration.

I know I desperately need to brush up my administrative skills ...I saw many free courses on excel and was wondering if it's worth ? Or would you prefer to do a full fledged medical secretary course ?
Those experienced please advice me on the

Thanks in advance

As a business owner and ex corporate management in Marketing.... My suggestion is to go to a temp agency.

They can help you hone in on skills you need to improve.

We only hire from the temp pool because we see who fits with the company best on a trial period just as you see if you fit within the corporation.

Good luck,

I work in a medical billing office, I would tell you what I do but it takes more than a sound bite, I have degrees in accounting and database management. That really isn't why I answered though, I have no idea what a medical secretary is. We have 178 employees, 35 or so are doctors, another 50 anesthetists, the rest are support staff. No medical secretary.

What exactly is a medical secretary if someone who is an admin in the medical field has never heard of one? It is rather hard to tell you what you need if I don't know what it is.

If Suzanne is correct and you are speaking of transcription, don't. They have some fairly good programs out that do transcription work. Even though we see the value in humans doing the work we had to let one of our four go and the other three were made part time and given coding duties in other departments.

If you have a community college near by stop in and ask. They just might have something that will help you improve your skills or advise you on what is current. It might not hurt to take up a class or two on software programs so you are up to date.

the other S.

PS Perhaps that is what a transcriptionist was called in the old days a medical secretary.

I know my Microsoft certifications really helped beef up my resume. I went through a company called New Horizons Computer Learning Center. Very down to business, forgive the pun, and straight to the point. I am certified in the entire suite and use my xls knowledge daily as a Medicare biller for three large hospital facilities. I don't think they're national but if you google it I am sure you can find a resource. Good Luck to you and yours. S. :-)

It really depends on your background. Do you have any medical background? If not, then you will need to get a medical dictionary and study the heck out of it. Medical secretaries need to be familiar with medical terminology. I would definitely take the excel course.
