Hi there
My cousin is pregnant and has decided to be a single mother (better for her and baby girl). She is due in March and she works 2 jobs. I told her i'm sure she can get some financial help.
Does anyone know anything about medicaid? Who can get it? I'm sure there is an income level, if so does anyone know?
Thanks

What can I do next?

Why doesn't she use her med. ins. from her 2 jobs ? or does she not carry it? you have to be dirt poor to get some of this fina. aide out there. I had to work f/t to have my med. ins. for my children. what has she been doing for care all this time, she is due in March !!

If your cousin is pregnant the state of Texas covers her. She just has to fill out an application, Medicaid always covers pregnant women, so tell her to go fill it out. Medicaid will aprove regardless of income. After she has the baby she can get on food stamps and TANF (money that helps single parents afford their child, untill child support is established or she goes back to work). E-mail me and I will give you more information on things she can do to help her as a single parent.

Shemost certainly can get Medicaid, and depending on her income may qualify for food stamps. If she's never applied to for benefits in the state of Texas, she can do so on this website (if she has applied before, this site will still be helpful in finding her local TDHS office):

https://www.yourtexasbenefits.com/wps/portal

When she is approved, they'll even pay any unpaid medical bills she's had from the previous three months.

Hi A.. Being Pregnant and Single usually qualifies her for Medicaid. The only problem is there is no longer emergency Medicaid and being due in March, I am not sure how long the process may take. She may need to call 211 for the closest DHS office near her and get an application done ASAP.

The other question is does her currant OB take Medicaid. It is
hard to transfer care this late into her pregnancy.

I know she can get help with Formula for the baby through WIC no matter what your income is. She can get help now. She can get the number to her nearest location calling 211.

There is a program called "pregnancy medicaid" and it takes almost no time to get approved for. The income requirements aren't as strict because they figure that pregnant women really need help. I'm not dirt poor and I've used it for both of my pregnancies. Even if she gets on pregnancy medicaid she can still choose any doctor or hospital that she wants to use. And the really nice thing is that her child will be covered by medicaid until he is a year old so if her baby ever gets sick she will never have to pay a dime for him to get medical attention.

I am not real familiar with this, but I know there is CHIPS which is insurance for children in lower income families. I don't know the number, but I am sure you can google it and get some info. Hope this helps.

The best thing for her to do is apply for medicaid immediatly. I was on medicaid for 3 pregnancies but I don't know the income requirements are but I can tell you how to apply. If she lives in Collin County the Human Resource office is located in Mckinney. When she goes to fill out an application all she will need is to know her income and household expenses like electricity, phone, and water bill. When she goes to apply she will fill out the application which she will submit and then be called in for an appointment. They say it can take up to 6 weeks to be called to set up an appointment. When she goes for her appointment she will need to provide proof of income in the form of paycheck stubs from the past two months.
One woman said she had trouble with not having the biological father involved but they never asked me about the fathers involvement.
Medicaid covers pregnant women up to 6 weeks after she is pregnant. If she is covered by medicaid when she has the baby then the baby will be automatically covered by medicaid for the first year of life (in Texas, by law, the mother's insurance is required to provide this coverage). After that she will have to reapply for medicaid and if medicaid will not cover the child then she can apply for CHIP (children's health insurance program).
If she is approved for medicaid she will have to select a doctor that accepts medicaid. The medicaid plan she chooses will give her a list of doctors to contact to find out is they currently accept medicaid patients. She will deliver at the hospital where the doctor is on file.
She can also apply for WIC which will supply milk, cheese, peanut butter or beans, and cereal for her before the baby comes and will supply even more for her is she nurses or formula for the baby after the birth. It is easier to apply for WIC if she is already approved for medicaid since she will automatically qualify. However, if she does not qualify for medicaid she may still be able to receive WIC benefits since the requirements are slightly different. If she chooses to nurse they will provide support for her is she needs it. In Collin County there are WIC offices in Wylie, Plano, and McKinney - I prefer the McKinney or the Wylie offices.
I think I have typed everything I know. If you have more question feel free to email me, I may be able to answer them.
It's unfortunate that it is so difficult to get insurance for pregnancies. I hope things work out for your cousin. Also, if she does not receive Medicaid before the baby arrives she can apply for assistance for the bills afterward by going through the same application process.

Yes she can qualify for Medicaid and foodstamps. But watch out b/c they will want to know who the father is and esp. if she gets foodstamps they will want you to get some help from the BIO father. I had a rough time b/c I didn't want my son BIO father to show up and/or have rights so I opted not have Medicaid .
Good Luck to your cousin.
