Hi,
To start if he works for a Company now, that has more than (I think) 25 employees, they HAVE to offer you COBRA benefits. Continuing coverage. However they don't have to pay any part of the insurance any more. It will be expensive, and most can’t afford it.
The difference between Medicare and Medicaid. Medicare is for primarily over 65, but disabled person can get it also. Medicaid is for income challenged. You don't want to go till your income has dropped. Otherwise they will just tell you don’t qualify, and you will have to go back another day. They look at the month. So, if your husband has already received his last pay check before 3-1-07, then go now. But if he has income for March, you will probably need to wait. Take everything that you can imagine with you. All your bills, and expenses. Including any child care, if you help any elderly or needy in your family. Phone, lease, insurance, electric, water, medical expenses, ect. Birth certificates for the kids, and SS cards. You can go and wait if you need emergency food stamps. However, most turn in their paperwork and pray for a early morning appt, but plan on being there for hours. They work in the emergency cases through out the day.
If you don’t get Medicaid, you can ask your school if they have a student policy,. If it is a group policy, you can get any preexisting condition covered, if you don’t have more than a 30 day lapse in coverage.
If that doesn’t work call Al Boenker Insurance and ask for the health dept. I used to work their. They can tell you all your options.
You might look at Fortis, they have a short tem policy, but Major Medical only.
Good Luck,
P.
