Hey Mamas!! I'm hoping some of you can give me some insight into this stuff. My brother and his wife have no medical coverage of any sort and he cannot afford private insurance. Is there any program available to him and his family? Here are some details:

It is my brother, his wife, her 3 daughters from a previous marriage, and 1 daughter they have together. A family of 6 living on his less than $26K a year plus minimal child support for the 3 girls. The 3 step-daughters are on their father's insurance, and the other daughter is on Medicaid. Is there anything available for them that you know of?

BTW, I have visited the Medicaid (Texas) website, and it sounds to me like he should at least apply. It is an extensive process, yes?

Thanks so much for any info. you can share.

What can I do next?

He should definitely apply. He or his wife needs to go to the Medicaid office for their county and apply in person. NEVER mail an application and NEVER drop it off in the box at the office. The apps tend to get "lost" and you have to apply again (big pain in the butt!). Tell him to be prepared to wait all day (it might not take that long, but be prepared), and to get there as soon as they open (usually 8am), if not before. When I got pregnant with my son, we weren't insured (and not planning on getting pregnant at that time), so I applied for medicaid as soon as I knew I was pregnant. Also, unless there's no other option, don't take the kids. They don't have anything for kids, and there are so many (impatient, grumpy) people there, and kids get so bored waiting. With 6 people in the family, they should be approved, but I don't know how it all works exactly. But he should definitely apply!

He should go ahead and try to apply for Medicaid, but I don't think that adults are covered. The process isn't hard.

If they can't get covered by medicaid I know some hospital systems have a low-cost program. JPS is one of them, but that is for Tarrant County only. He might want to look into things like that.
