There are very inexensive mattress protectors. If you have kids, I would not risk them getting anywhere near plastic garbage bags.

No. The plastic actually makes the sheet come off much easier and the child can get tangled. I had to show my husband this when he wanted to put them on for my son. I bought a waterproof mattress cover at aTarget for about $10. It was not the crappy plastic cover that can rip easily and my son did not get super hot with it under his sheet.

We did that for my home birth, but the sheets slid around a lot when getting in and out of the bed. Maybe if your sheets were really tight it wouldn't be an issue?

Do NOT NOT NOT use a garbage bag... it is dangerous and a safety hazard. What if your child suffocates?

Just buy a proper mattress cover.... I got mine from Amazon.
Just use the search words "waterproof bed pads" or "waterproof crib pads" and many will show up.

They have plastic mattress protectors (fitted) that work great and are made for that purpose. I wouldn't use garbage bags because of the chemicals used to make the bag for the purpose of protecting you from the garbage and the smell of garbage.

The plastic isn't sealed like child safe ones they give off toxins etc and runkle up.A fitted rubber/plastic/pvc type sheet and a washable absorbent mat on top of that under the sheets is best to stop them getting sweaty, if they pee on just the waterproof one it sits there and can leak off down the side when the child moves if you use one that mops it up a bit you can just sling it in the wash.

Hello, I would not use them. My concern is that, if the sheet should happen to come off, the bags are right where your child could be harmed by suffocation. You can get the vinyl mattress covers at places like Sears, WalMart and Target. They have the ones which cover the whole mattress and zip up. They are very safe.
Good luck with your precious family.

I would never do this. Would you want to sleep on trash bags? I am sure it would be really hot and loud. Buy an inexpensive waterproof mattress pad. I have seen them as low as $8 or 9 at Walmart.

I would not use plastic bags. Go to a mattress or furnture store and buy a mattress cover that suits bed wetting issues. The plastic bag does not seem so safe (just the breathing in the plasticpart of it all).

We just had this question yesterday, so you may want to search for that one. I wouldn't use plastic bags just in case they got loose and presented a suffocation hazard for your child. There are great, fabric-like pads you can buy at Babies R Us and put over or under the mattress pad. They are highly absorbant and washable! We've been using them for a few years.

The reason plastic bags are dangerous is that some kids (like mine) thrash around all night and frequently pull the sheets off of the sides of the bed -including the mattress pad. I've found my 4 year old wadded up in all of the bedding when checking on him numerous times. Especially when sleeping, the plastic bag could get on a child's face and suffocate them, or, if the child isn't old enough to understand -he or she could "play" with the bag and wind up suffocating. There's a reason that ALL plastic bags have warnings about small children on them!

I use mattress protectors by Leggett & Platt, in all the years I have used them, nothing has ever got through them. They are a little pricier than the one's at walmart, but well worth the cost. I had a bed wetter in my house for a while, so these literally saved my mattresses. My mattress still looks as good as new.

If you have an "Ana's Linens" in your area they have good mattress protectors for a low price. Same quality as the department/mattress stores. Walmart's may be a bit more cheap but they may not last. Better to get a mattress cover then bags. You leave it on even after your child grows out of the wetting the bed, good for other types of spills.

A garbage bag is interesting since it is not so ridged. You could also use a visqueen sheet and there are mattress protectors that are used for foam mattresses to stay in warranty. I use drawstring sheets and the problem of slipping off is eliminated. Go to:

No, you should not. Garbage bags can smother children, and will slip all over the place under sheets on a mattress. Go to Walmart, and buy a plastic mattress cover for like $5.00 and don't risk your children's lives!

We have put a couple garbage bags under our daughter's sheets before. We have a mattress cover, but occasionally it doesn't get washed/dried in time for bed, so we just use the bags temporarily.

I don't know why Kim R. says it's dangerous. If the bag is under the sheet, where is it gonna go?

You might want to reconsider. Plastic bags tend to collect molds & mildew really fast.
