We found out on Friday that we will be relocating in a couple of months to Maryland. Our kids are currently in GREAT schools here in Illinois. We do not want to sacrifice the kids education when we move, even though the cost of living is so much higher out there. Anyway, I'm looking for specific information about schools in a couple of areas: Columbia, Ellicott, Elkridge, Eldersburg, and Sykesville. Those are the places of interest so far. I'd love to hear other towns that you find appealing too. Next school year our kids will be in first and 3rd grade. Our older one is in excellerated math classes. I'd like to know which schools have programs for gifted and excellerated programs. I'd also LOVE to hear what you have to say about the schools: how new they are, the staff, extra curricular activities/programs, parent involvement, etc. We'd also love to hear about the cities as well. We're moving from a "borrow a cup of sugar, or a stick of butter" neighborhood on a cul-de-sac, and we're a hating to have to give this up. I'm really nervous about moving, and would like to move into a good neighborhood. By that, I don't mean the biggest or best houses. I mean where it feels like home. Any help would be greatly appreciated! BTW, I've already looked into the great schools site. It has been really helpful. I was hoping for more personal insight into the schools.

What can I do next?

we lived there for some time, and my husband grew up there. Montgomery, Howard and Anne Arundel counties are the best as far as schools, though montgomery is a lot more expensive. And I'd stick to south, central and east of Howard county.

Ellicott City is really great and so much is popping up near there, and Columbia has so much as well (i LOVED the children's museum there and honestly preferred the mall there as opposed to the one in annapolis or the outlet mall in hanover)

We moved to texas so in comparison... Maryland (in all of the communities we lived in) never offered us that cozy neighborhood sense where everyone just gets along. Maryland is in between Baltimore and DC and everyone is pretty stressed, lots of traffic so I noticed it's a "hurry and get on with what you're doing" sort of place. not a "hi, how are you" type of place. I never made too many friends but if I were to recommend you find that kind of environment... it'd be Columbia. Lots of recreation, sports, shopping, museums and neighborhoods popping up by the minute. A lot of families moving there. Elicott City too but there are more yuppies there than Columbia.

There are playgroups in the area and you can find them on meetup.com. I had some good luck and a some bad luck.

Maryland is so gorgeous and I'm envious of you! the Fall is amazing and all the pumpkin patches you can go to and festivals for each season, and farms everywhere you can go pick your own yummies: http://www.pickyourown.org/MD.htm

And you're so close to DC and all their FREE museums as well as Baltimore with the science museum and aquairum!

good luck on the move! you'll love maryland!

texas has much friendlier people but i truly miss it.

search on http://www.greatschools.net and see what's out there.

Ellicot city is a VERY nice town - EXPENSIVE and "uppity"....

I live in Reston, VA - which is 22 miles west of DC. Depending upon where your husband is going to be working, you can look into Germantown if he's closer to DC if he's closer to Baltimore - Annapolis is also a great place to look.

GOOD LUCK!!

Howard county does have great schools. But it can get iffy based on neighborhoods.
I don't have direct experience to give you neighborhood picks. Mine though from outside the county would be Ellicot City. Lots going on and cute downtown area.
