I'd try the magic eraser first because it's cheapest, but if that doesn't work, I second the Goof Off suggestion. It works wonders on stains you'd think would be impossible to get out!
Anyone have any advice on how to get permanent marker off hardwood floors with a water-based finish?

I second Magic Eraser, those things are incredible!
I will also add "magic eraser". Took black Sharpie off of a light wood desk.
did you try the magic eraser by mr clean? Works on pretty much everything
You might try rubbing alchohol.
Goof Off works great for getting out permanent marker. I'm not sure if it's water based. Although probably a pretty strong product, it doesn't have a harsh smell and doesn't ruin finishes.
I have had success with accetone based nail polish remover. use lightly with a cotton ball.
Ive used a dab of lighter fluid on ink before with great success
I had exactly the same problem. Magic eraser and a bit of elbow grease did the trick.
