Lump in My Throat

I'm 8 weeks pregnant, but I'm not sure if this is related or not. I've had the feeling of a lump in my throat for the past few weeks. It's consistent, never worse or better, and nothing seems to change it. It almost feels like there's something stuck in my throat, like a pill I didn't fully swallow or something. My glands appear to be normal-sized and palpitating my thyroid/neck area doesn't set off any alarms for me, but I'm not a doctor. I know ya'll aren't either, but being pregnant and with a heart condition (and with my recent abscess tooth) I've seen so many doctors if I have to see one more I'll scream. I have a checkup with my OB but not until Friday and surely I will bring it up then. But in the meantime... any suggestions?

What can I do next?

I bet it is acid reflux. I work with patients with voice disorders caused by acid reflux and they often have the same complaint

I have that happen to me now and then. I have never been able to figure out what triggers it, and it usually lasts around a week or so when it happens.
I usually gargle with listerine often, and drink cold things, and take advil for inflammation purposes and it seems to help it pass faster.

I don't know what they feel like, but I've heard that a lot of people these days are getting pollups (sp?) in their throat. My boss has had it twice. Each time he's had to have an office surgical procedure to remove them.

You should go to the doc, but probably not an OB. I don't think this is related to your pregnancy.

Take some antacid. I often have that feeling when I have gas or some acid reflux that needs to go up or down.

I wasn't pregnant at the time but I had this exact symptom.
And it really did turn out to be acid reflux.
A few weeks on Prilosec cleared it right up.
Tell your doctor and see if there's something you can take for it that's safe while you are pregnant.

I'd worry about a goiter that you can't detect, if I were you. If you get to the point that you can't swallow, go get looked at before. That's a little scary.

Just in case it's just indigestion, can you try a couple of Tums and see if that would help?

My husband had this feeling of a lump in his throat and after seeing the doctor, and tests (cameras down the throat etc) he was cleared of any problems, cancer etc.

It's just one of those things for him. Not sure about you, but it could be nothing.

My first thought was heartburn. Given that you are pregnant and heartburn is often an accompanying condition.... it wouldn't surprise me. When mine was at it worst the last time (I'd had food poisoning or something and had a few bouts of vomiting the night before, then drank soda b/c it sounded good and nothing else did, lol)... I felt like that. Like there was a lump and something was poking me... like a pill that didn't go down, or that did go down but scratched something on the way...

I went back on prilosec for a few days and the heartburn calmed down and that feeling went away pretty quickly.

Sorry you are having this uncomfortable sensation. Good news is that it is often not caused by something serious. It can be caused by acid reflux, allergies, throat infection, or anxiety that causes the muscles to contract in your throat/neck. It's rarely caused by tumor or throat cancer (which primary symptom is generally painless hoarse voice). Please talk to your Dr about it on Friday, but until then, please try to relax. My husband and I both have had this sensation come and go over the last year or so during periods of great stress. Oh, and congrats on your pregnancy! Best wishes! Nurse Midwife Mama
