Hi Mamas! I think I am looking f or some kind of support and to know that this has happened to other people. I had an IUD (Mirana) put in after baby #3 2 years ago. I am one of those people who don't have many side effects - I don't have a period anymore... if anything I have light spotting but that isn't every month.
My hubby and I went through a "dry spell" and didn't have sex for a while. We had sex on September 24 and then again a week or 2 later. (I know dry spell but we have both been really busy, sick and tired to do anything).
For the last week or 2 I have been having pregnant like systems - worse than what I normally do with Mirena when it's suppose to be that time of of the month. I have had headaches, nausea, tummy pain (like stretching in my uterus area, tender boobs, cravings for Applebees french fries (only other time I had that was when I was preggo with my 3 other kids). I took a home test and it had a fainter one line and then the solid second line - so I waited and took another the following morning 1st urine home test and it was negative. I still feel preggo a week later - I called my nurse for our health insurance and she suggested that I call my OB and see what they say. I called my OB explained I had a + test then a - test - they said to get in for a blood test. I had the blood test today and now I am waiting for the results and won't hear back until tomorrow sometime.
I have googled pregnant with IUD and it is pretty scary. I also know of a girl I graduated with who is currently pregnant with an IUD baby and still has the IUD in. I am worried about the whole situation. My husband and I thought we were done (financially 3 is good for us). If we could afford it we would have more in a heart beat -- We are both have the feeling is we will take it as it comes and if we are pregnant it is meant to be and all children are a gift from God.
Has anyone else gone through this?
Thank you for all your kind words. I talked with my doctor and they said that the test came back negative. That the + then - test could have been my body miscarrying at that time. Kind of sad as I was kind of hoping that it was meant to be but also glad too.
I read a story about a baby being born holding the IUD!! The baby was fine, I thought that was too cute ;) I too have read some of the sadder stories but just see what happens tomorrow and go from there. Wish you the best!!
Chances of getting pregnant with an IUD are slim. It can happen but it's very rare, and when it does the risk is high for it being an ectopic pregnancy. So if your pregnancy test comes back positive, your OB is going to want to figure out immediately if it's an ectopic pregnancy which is extremely dangerous and nearly always fatal if it's not caught in time.
That said, it's possible that the first seemingly positive home test you took picked up just enough hormone from a chemical pregnancy ie. your body "thought" it was pregnant and the surge in hormone went down by the time you took the next test. It could have been just a hormone surge.
Waiting is really hard, but you will have an answer one way or another soon.
And the side effects you're talking about sound quite bothersome. Honestly, consider vasectomy. Outpatient surgery, two days on the sofa, one week of being gentle with himself, and then after he's had two "negative" samples, you're good to go - for the rest of your lives. Covered by insurance. Yes, yes, yes, everyone has a second cousin's neighbor's friend's brother's wife who got pregnant after a vasectomy - statistically, it is far rarer than getting pregnant on the pill.
Whatever happens with your current situation, you are getting good, responsible medical care and all will be well, one way or another.
There are a few confusing things here. If a pregnancy test was done and came back positive (even a faint positive); then it is positive IF THE TEST WAS PERFORMED CORRECT according to directions. Usually the 1st one comes back negative and the 2nd one positive though. I would have told you to just repeat the test we a better test and making sure the exp. date was still good; but since you have already gone in for a blood test (BTW, the current urine test are just as good); then just wait and see the results of that. No worries.... If you are pregnant it is very early and not a huge deal. If it comes back positive the doctor/midwife will just take the IUD out and you will go on with your pregnancy. Here I am sitting on the internet at crazy hours in the morning reading and writing, but I sometimes want to yell "STAY OFF THE INTERNET". We have joke in my profession.... "Dr. Google will have everyone 6 clicks away from terminal cancer". You can not believe everything you read. Any Joe Blow can write something and their "writings" show up on the internet. The reason that IUD are issues are because they take up needed space in the uterus that is needed for baby to grow. As they baby grows, it is a potential problem as it can cause eye damage and a few other things. Well that is FAR..... down the road. Too early right now to have damage as the baby is still a zygote and not big enough to see. So EVEN if you are, not a big deal if the baby truly did implant in the uterus. It just has a neighbor until the OB pulls it out. :)
IUD's are VERY effective against pregnancy, so do not worry. A previous poster is correct though. IUDs do not stop fertilization, they stop implantation. So if you are 'blessed' with another child, do not worry everything will be fine. I do have a friend who was blessed with "#4 & #5" both with an IUD in place.... I joked and told her that was way too many blessings and to sign the tubal permit as soon as possible. LOL! Both boys are old now, 9 and 7 and are 100% fine....
I am still trying to get over the fact you say not having sex from Sept. 24 & then a week or two later is a "dry spell" (OMGoodness)..... If you call that a dry spell you are NOT aware what is NOT happening in most bedrooms. A couple with 3 kids and you still manage to have sex that often.... YOU ROCK GIRL! Do relax though... It will be fine either way. Do not fear the IUD. Now if you do not want other kids, maybe look at other birth control options. Good luck and relax. Happy Dry Spells (lol)...
My OB/GYN told me not to worry that most scare stories are just that. I had the choice of leaving the IUD in or having it removed. He said babies with born with an IUD in are usually born with an IUD sitting on their head. Not malformed in some way.

I thought I was constantly pregnant when I had the IUD. That is one of the reasons I had it removed. It was fine at first, but then over time, side effects started. It drove me nuts and I took several pregnancy tests during the course of having it (2 years). I thought I had a positive pregnancy test once too, but after a couple of negatives afterward, chalked it up to an evaporation line. Anyway, hope this helps.
Im sure anything is possible but I think your freaking yourself out. Don't worry until there is a reason to. IUD are very effective and pregnancy is unlikely. Let us know tomorrow!

My mother actually got pregnant with my youngest sibling with an IUD in. They told her the whole time the baby was most likely going to die. Well he came out and so did the IUD. I guess she is one of the few success stories. Although I remember it being a very stressful time for her.
I've since had friends get pregnant on IUDS. All of theirs actually had unknowingly to them fallen out and they hadn't checked their strings monthly like you are suppose to so they were fine.
Supposedly as long as the IUD is still in and it hasn't implanted into the uterine wall in a freak accident the odds of getting pregnant are beyond slim. Most people get pregnant when they fall out or the implantation into the uterus occurs. Supposedly if it does the implantation thing people start to feel sick and pain down in that area. Sure you could be the less than 1% but more than likely you are fine.
When I got mine a friend told me to buy a pregnancy test every month from the dollar store because once it takes your period away but you still feel it every month you'll be sure you are. I saw what she meant. I've had mine now 2 years and kinda have an idea when my time of the month should be so I understand it's just that and I'm not pregnant.... but I needed alot of pregnancy tests before that! hehe
my understanding about those implanted things was that you could have a fertile egg but it would not attach or grow because there was a foriegn object in your body where the egg would need to grow safely. so the fertile egg never develops and is gone so early on that it just seems like a period. i would ask your doctor about this and see if i am correct. as when i spoke to my doc about it and what i was wanting he seemed to agree. but i had my tubes tied and he said there would be no side effects....what a crock! lol. hope what ever Gods will for your family will be done and perhaps congrats! hope your safe and healthy what ever is going on. best of luck.
