We had to put my son on pretnizone with his nebulizer for a short time. He's been on it for two weeks and since about then he's been peeing like crazy. Like this morning my husband changed him at 6:00 and he was soaked through (with the diaper completely full) by 7:30. Does anyone know if this is a side effect of the steriod or could he just be growing or what? He hasn't been drinking anymore than usual. Thanks!
Yes I'm 99% sure it is a Pretnizone effect. Vets also use Pretnizone for dogs and my dog was going constantly. Ensure your son is getting plenty of fluids (water/formula) so he doesn't get dehyrdrated.
Prednisone (a steriod) causes the body to retain water. Therefore, now that your child is off of it, he is letting that water leave his system...hence LOTS of wet diapers. This is a good thing :)
This happens to my DS whenever we have to add the oral prednisone when his asthma is flaring. I asked my cousin, a nurse, about it once. She had not heard of it as a side effect, but thought it certainly could be. The good news is that it settles down once they are off the meds!
This is totally normal with a steroid. Increased thirst and increased urinations. If you have any concerns about how much it has increased, you should talk with your son's physician to make sure this is to be expected.
yes. Increased frequency of urination is a common side effect of prednisone.
Yes it is the prednisone...It should stop once he is off the medication
A lot of steroids cause excessive thirst. Which would explain all the wet diapers.
I'm not sure for kids/people, but I do know that any time our dog has been on a steroid, he drinks and pees a LOT!!! Check with the doctor!
