The Little Elm public beach at the Lewisville lake is free. Just remember that it is lake water and you can't see through it, so take safety precautions.
I am hoping to pick your mama-minds...
I am trying to collect some ideas of things to do this summer with my children...either free or very inexpensive in the Denton area or the general DFW area. Even some inexpensive day trip ideas would be wonderful! I really appreciate your input!!

You should consider joining a moms club! We (our chapter) do tons of field trips, including berry picking, museums, bounce house places, etc. all with other moms and kids. It's a lot of fun. http://www.momsclub.org/
If you are thinking about a camp, there are lots of day camps that the city of denton runs. I see you're in Argyle-not sure what they offer but it may be worth a drive into Denton!
Check out both www.burbmom.net and www.familyeguide.com which are both local sites promoting all sorts of good stuff for moms/families in your area.
Check out www.familyeguide.com ... All we do is feature family activities. Although most of what we feature is in the Lewisville, Highland Village and Flower Mound area, we also let families know about fun and affordable activities in the metroplex, such as Founders Plaza (the DFW Airport observation area, how to get FREE tickets to the Arboretum (featured in next week's issue), etc.) Every week we list new things... The issue that goes out later this week will not only include some last minute Spring Break Camps, but will also include some ideas of things to do with your kids on a budget during spring break. I recommend signing up for the weekly newsletter to get the most timely information delivered directly to your email. Also, our new website will launch later this month and will be VERY user friendly.
Good luck!
Glen Rose is perfect for an inexpensive day trip. I take my kiddos there pretty often. I load up lots of snacks and lunch in the cooler so we don't have to eat out. We spend the first half of the day going through Fossil Rim. Once we're done there we have a picnic lunch and we spend the afternoon at the State Park. The kids can spend hours wading around in the dinosaur prints. It's such a fun and lowkey way to spend the day. If you have a Passbook there's a coupon in there for a free child admission w/ the purchase of an adult admission @ Fossil Rim.
Check out the Summer Camp guide in www.momsoutloud.com - they list them by city. =)
Also North Texas kids magazine has a Summer Camp Guide in their March, April, May, June & July issues. Go to www.northtexaskids.com to view issues online or pick it up anywhere moms are sitting and waiting (preschools, pediatricians, etc)
Well..our most favorite thing to do over the summer is swim..and we absolutely love to go to the Lewisville Parks pools..there is one right behind Lewisville High School called Sun Valley Aquatics, and there is a smaller one on College street. We are actually considering getting a family pass this year, but even for the day you spend about $5 per person at Sun Valley, and $3 at the smaller one. There are great shaded spots..my kids could, and have spent several happy hours there! My girls were 8 and 5 last year, and loved it (along with my 2 and 1 year olds:) Have fun..I cant wait for summer either!! ~A.~
I heard the Denton Water Park has Friday 10am story time over the loud speaker in the kiddie pool area for free. And if you want to stay after and play you just pay the admission. I haven't been yet as my son was just a baby last summer, but I hope to go a lot this summer.
We like to buy a pass to the water park every year. You can get up to six people on a family pass. For the investment we get a lot of free fun. Plus you can pack lunches, drinks and snacks and not have to worry about buying stuff in the park.
Gainesville has an inexpensive zoo which is only about 20 minutes away. Tickets are $4 for children and $6 for kids. Frank Buck Zoo. If you get there by 10:00, you can feed the giraffes for $1. It is really easy to find and there is an awesome park for the kids to play afterward and to have a picnic lunch.
We also choose a new Denton park to go to each time we go. Eureka is huge and the kids love it. North Lakes Is not only cool but we take cardboard boxes and go "sledding" down the hills. The park by the civic center has some unique playground equipment. Avondale has trails the kids can ride their bikes on.
Sometimes we go to PetSmart and just look around. The kids love to see all the animals and fish. One day we spent an hour and a half in there.
For a special treat there is the $2 cinema and lunar mini golf in the mall. Since you have girls, i will tell you that Dillards will put make up on them from the samples if they are not busy.
i haven't been yet, but i've heard that cabellas is a fun place to go take your kids and look at the animals. Also glenview baptist of off 820 has a free play time every 1st, 3rd and 5th mondays from 10 to 12. they have a lot of fun play equipment. (but if you go get there at 10 otherwise it fills up and you can't get in until someone leaves). of course there is always the gainsville zoo.
I would highly recommend the Boy Scout Museum in Irving. It is free on Mondays. I was very impressed!
You have already recieved a lot of great advice. Wednesdays at the fort worth zoo are 1/2 price admissions. It was only $16 for our family of 4, we took a picnic lunch so all the money we spent was the admission and gas to get there.
Also each library around Denton has a story time 1-2 days a week, which is free.
The water park is inexpensive if you get a season pass and you can go as much as you want. They have an inside pool and outside water park.
There is a bounce house place off of Hwy 377 on the left side after leaving Denton. I think its about $5 a child. I cant remember what it is called.
Hope this helps :)
