I am looking for more information about any area private schools that specialize in working with children with learning disabilities/differences, such as ADD. I have a 12 year old struggling in public school and would like to investigate private education. I just don't know where to start. Any information would be a great help!

The Shelton School at Arapaho and Hillcrest is incredible. It is a private school that specializes in all types of learning differences. I know it is quite expensive but they do have some scholarships available. Another school is Fairhill School that is located at Keller Springs and Preston area. I have friends with kids in both schools and they are very happy. Good Luck!!

Check out Shelton. You will be surprized at what you find. I am glad to hear someone seeking an alternative environment instead of throwing another pill or medication at the "situation". Another avenue to investigate is that of a tutor. Tutoring isn't always about academics. It can also be about study skills or best practices. If your child is well socialized in the current school, tutoring can be a good option. // My own daughter is tutored by Nancy Redington for dyslexia. Willow Bend Academy is supposed to be wonderful. I have heard hit and miss reviews of Shelton, and your kid had better fit the Winston mold if that school is going to work out for them. I'd also check out the background of some of the teachers working there, especially in the upper school. Let us know what you decide and how it works out - this is such a huge problem for so many parents in Texas. Lots of home schooling families in Plano and Allen ISDs, not to mention all of the other "great" school districts. It's a whole new ball game when you're dealing with special ed, and the wealthier districts have an even bigger pool of tax dollars to pay attorneys... ahem, I mean, at their disposal :-)
Have you talked any with the people at Scottish Rite - they test for learning disabilities and would be a great source of information. Also try the Shelton school - for some reason this has come up several times and may be a good place to start. There is also a great website dallasprivateschools.com.

Great Lakes Academy specializes in children with ADD/ADHD, but they also have a lot of eperience with all kind of other learning differences. My son has ADHD, Aspergers Syndrome, and dysgraphia. Dallas is very lucky to have one of the best schools in the country. The Shelton School, located at Hillcrest and Arapaho is a school and evaluation center that specializes in children with learning differences. They do not see these as disabilities!! They have a top notch evaluation center that can pinpoint exactly what the issues are and then work to remediate what your child may have missed!! Their goal is to teach the children how to learn with their tools and then get them back into the mainstream system.
My 11 year old daughter, who struggles with ADHD and dyslexia, has benefited so much! I encourage you to check it out!!

Great Lakes Academy specializes in educating students with learning differences and ADD. They provide a nurturing and stimulating learning environment and small class sizes. The teachers and staff are experts on how to teach kids who learn differently. YOu have to call to make an appointment to see the school and talk to the Admissions Director.
Try the Shelton School in North Dallas or American Heritage Academy in Allen. Both of these private schools are for learning disabilites.
My nephew goes to the Allen school (6) and has THRIVED there! He has dyslexia and ADD.

I would consider moving to a new public school district that may have a better Special ed. department. I think Allen and Plano have GREAT Special ed. departments that may not be so "over-loaded" with special needs. They may have smaller classes etc...If money is not an issue then private schools might be good too. Try contacting the Children's Hospital in Dallas with the Social Work department they may be able to steer you the right way for specialized schools to fit your child's needs.

You're lucky to be looking for a school in Dallas for your learning-different child. You have a lot of options! In addition to simply finding a school that serves your child's needs -- be sure to have a thorough assessment by a neuro-psych or educational-psych to determine the best fit. In addition, visit different schools to find the right fit for your and your child's personality. Let's face it, you're going to spend a lot of money at a private school. Consider the social environment for both your child as well as the family. The various LD schools in Dallas all have distinct personalities. I like to have more involvement and communicate w/ teachers -- so I like Oak Hill. My child is speech delayed/sensory issues. Needless to say, I don't get feedback from him!! I like that parents/teachers know him and it's a small village, so I follow his progress through the "community." Be sure to include Oak Hill on your list of schools to interview.
The Winston School is awesome - it's at Royal Ln. and the Tollway. Call the school for a tour!
My hubby has worked there for 18 years and has watched the programs grow and become very professional. I know a lot of the teachers there, and it is a very supportive environment for each child and their individual learning difference!

Shelton is for children with learning differences who have average or above-average intelligence. Children who fail or are at high risk to fail when exposed to school experiences using conventional educational techniques. My son is ADD and has attended Shelton since preschool. He has improved greatly and will be leaving Shelton next year to attend Bishop Lynch High School. He has attended Shelton since preschool. I love Shelton and cannot begin to tell how great the school has been for us. I don't know what we would have done without Shelton. Just give them a call and they will answer all your questions.
