Looking for Places to Go Horseback Riding

I'm looking for a good place to go horseback riding - does anyone have any suggestions? When I was younger, I went to a place where they basically gave you a horse, showed you where you were allowed to ride and then let you roam free on your own for an hour. At the end of your time, they'd come find you and take you back to the stables. Unfortunately, I can't find any stables that do anything like this. Most of them want to do a guided trail ride and those are somewhat boring to me given my experience level. I doubt I'll find anything like the place I went to as a child because I'm guessing insurance policies for those businesses dictate that they don't give the rider that much freedom with the horse but I thought I'd check around anyway.

My husband is encouraging me to take this up again and have a hobby so I can have some "me time" every now and then. I'm not concerned about drive time (yet) so feel free to suggest any place you know of. Thanks!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

I just wanted to thank all of you for replying to my message. Great news! Some of your feedback made it possible for me to stumble upon a place called Black Mustang Ranch. They are located in Pilot Point which isn't too far from my house in Frisco and offers exactly what I was looking for. I actually went riding there this morning and had so much fun despite the very low temperature and the occasional misting. In case you are interested in checking them out, their website is Blackmustangranch.com

Thank you for suggesting the location in McKinney. I'd like to give them a try too because my parents live in Allen so if I have them babysit for me, it would be very convenient to go riding in McKinney just around the corner. Thanks again!!

I know what you mean. I'd love that, but I understand why they can't just let people go out on their own. I used to teach all levels of riders, and I am sure you can imagine that I had a great many people who would tell me they were experienced, when they barely know the horse's head from its behind! Perhaps if you find somewhere that you can take a couple of lessons from so they can get to know you and see that you are responsible, they will allow you something along the lines of what you are looking for. The barn I was at in Austin used to "lease" their lesson horses for a month at a time. You would basically pay at set price monthly which allowed you to ride the horse whenever it wasn't being used for lessons. I don't know if anywhere around here does it, but it was a great way for people to be around horses with no obligation, but still a lot of leeway as to what you wanted to do. Please update your message if you find anywhere, I may look into it myself once I have this baby. It's been years for me!

There is a place in Frisco, I can't remember the name of it but it is on the corner of Coit and 121. Maybe you could google and that would help. I certainly does sound relaxing! Good Luck!

There is a place in McKinney that I think used to (and may still) offer what you are looking for -- it is called JOLOBEK (I hope that is the correct spelling) - it is in McKinney.

You might also call around to some stables and see if they know of anyone who might have an arrangement that is close to what you are looking for.

Happy Trails!
