I bought my husband a Tom Tom One (3rd generation) for Christmas thinking it would be great for when he travels on buisiness and it is a dream. Right now you can find one on sale almost anywhere for 169.99. I have also used it in my car and it was a lifesaver we have been considering getting another one to keep in my car.

I love the Garmin. We borrowed one from a friend for vacation. We took it all the way to Savannah. It was great. I loved being able to find nearby places to eat or shop. (Wish I still had that!) I loved it so much I am giving one away in a drawing this month in my business as a prize for customers who send referals.

Garmin is the cheapest and in my opinion the best out there. You will get an additional discount if you buy it at Costco.

go to www.carolwrightgifts.com they are 19.99
for it looks like it would work very well good luck M.

I bought my husband the Garmin Nuvi for Christmas. We love it! It tells you what road to turn on, quickly re-routes if you miss a turn or choose to go a different way. You can also program it to avoid toll roads, change the voice, and use it as a hands-free device for your phone. It is small enough to truly be portable, not bulky like others I've seen.

Try Craigs list. They have many advantages over EBay:cost, locally-advertised stuff which cuts down on shipping etc..

The magellon (I'm not sure if I am spelling this correctly) is a great one. I had that before I got my car with one already in it. But it really did a great job getting me around. My husband got it on ebay for around $180.

We use the Magellon. We have been through 3 upgrades and they seem to always be on target with directions.

We bought a Garmin from Fry's. I could not live with out it. It is a little expensive up front but worth every penny. I am married now, but last year when my fiance moved here he was always getting lost, so I got him one.
If you want a cheaper model the guys at Fry's Electronics off of I20/Matlock are helpful.

if Verizon is your cellphone carrier you can use your cell phone. Its very inexpensive - just a couple of bucks when you use it or your can pay monthly - either way its cheap compared to the other systems. I have a Garmin and the verizon system works just as well (and sometimes even better)

I'm going to preclude this response with I'm sorry, because I read your question and just smiled. It must be the smart-a** in me, but, the first thing that came to mind as an answer to your question was...a map.
I have to say, we used my FIL's Garmin on our trip to NY and it was wonderful except in the mountains where it kept losing us and saying we were off road and to get back on the road. We were on the road, it's just that we were on the side of the mountains.

Not sure what affordable means to you but I have the Garmin and have been very happy with the nav. We have one built into our crossover and I find we take the Garmin in that care sometimes because the locations are more up to date. If you want to subscribe it even has a traffic feature so when I communte I know if there is a accident I need to avoid or just slow traffic. Your best bet is to go to Circuit City or Best Buy and try them out.
Good luck.

I have a Garmin Streetpilot c330 that I bought online through GPSonSale for just over $200. It doesn't always have the new information but it's been a lifesaver for me, admittedly directionally-challenged. We've been able to easily transfer it from car to car, it's basic and clear even if it's not the newest gadget with all the bells & whistles. Even my husband loves it!

We have a Garmin StreetPilot that we bought new back in Sept 2005, but it got to the point that me and hubby needed at the same times quite often. He is great with directions though, me not so much, that why its a necessity to me. Hubby just bought a new Garmin Nuvi a month or so ago, now we have one in both vehicles. Kind of like a cell phone to me now, hard to drive without it.

Hey A., For Christmas my husband got me the TomTom One XL-S. I love it. I use it frequently. This is not their top of the line. It does not have the capability for you to use it as handsfree for your phone. The thing I like about it most is it's text to speech. It actually tells you the name of the road to turn on to instead of just telling you to turn right in 400 yds. Don't know about you, but I need me some road names:):):) I also love the screen which is larger than most. I know that Best Buy is advertising them on sale right now. I hope this helps a little. L.:)

My husband got me a Garmin Novi for Christmas. I didn't ask for it, thought I didn't need it, but boy do I love it now. Not only does it get you where you need to go, but you can also look up near by gas stations, restaurants (by type), theaters, museums, etc..
