Looking for a Good Prenatal Yoga Routine

I've recently begun practicing yoga...only to find out, two weeks later, I'm pregnant! I'm loving how yoga makes me feel, but most of the poses "should be avoided during pregnancy." Has anyone had any good experiences with either tapes or books doing yoga at home during their pregnancy?? Thanks!

What can I do next?

Look for GAIAM's Shiva Ray's PRENATAL DVD/video...AWESOME ONE! I did it most every days of my pregnancy, up until the day gave birth! You can find it online at AMAZON or...? Ebay :) Swimming is GREAT TOO...if you have access to a pool. Good luck to you!

I had both the Leisa Hart and Shiva Rea DVDs and loved them both. Check your library first to make sure you like them, then you can get good deals on ebay.

The New Method Pre & Post-Natal DVD set ROCKS!!! I loved yoga before I became pregnant and when I found this set I couldn't have been happier! Not only did it keep me fit and healthy, it aided me in a nearly textbook labor and waterbirth! I was able to do the prenatal dvd EVEN on the day I delivered! The postnatal dvd is awesome b/c it allows for bonding with your newborn - AND focuses on your abs! :O) My daughter is 4-1/2 years old and I STILL use the prenatal dvd on a regular basis! Enjoy! And don't be afraid to chant! That's what helps the most when the time comes...

The link below shows it is available at Target now! :O)

If you're in the Seattle area you can check out prenatal yoga at the Good Sheperd Academy or the Greenlake area through the Seattle Holistic Center. My favorite was Colette. She's a former RN and she started the program. She also has a VHS tape you can do at home.

Yoga is wonderful! Shiva Rea has a pregnancy video. I haven't done it but she is a wonderful yogi. Don't worry too much about the poses, there are alot you can do when you are pregnant, and it's so good for you too! In the end yoga will have been wonderful for you, your baby, and your birthing experience!

I was also new to yoga when I discovered I was pregnant with my first child. I talk to the teacher and found that many of the posses could be altered to make then pregnancy friendly, Such as spreading the legs in child pose, and restricting twists. Talk to your teacher, she should have some ideas or be able to direct you to a prenatal instructor in your area.

Hope this helps! I know I would hate to have to give up my weekly Yoga!

Here's a cool deck of cards that will allow you to create a practice that's just right for you:
http://www.amazon.com/Prenatal-Yoga-Deck-Poses-Meditation...

I would also recommend taking a few more classes getting the basics down. It's really important to have correct alignment so that you don't injur yourself. You can either take a prenatal yoga class or an intro class. If it's the latter, let the instructor know so that he/she can modify the practice for you.

Have fun! This is a great form of exercise/relaxation/meditation, especially when preggo.

My very first experience with yoga was in my first pregnancy when I needed to stop using the treadmill and do something more gentle. I ended up with Prenatal Yoga With Shiva Rea (DVD), 12 dollars at Amazon.com. I liked it because she has one woman in each trimester with appropriately modified poses. It's calm and very do-able.

Yoga Journal and Lamaze have a prenatal yoga DVD that is good for all levels. Have you been going to a class? Ask your teacher. I practiced yoga through the 7th month of my pregnancy with twins. I was already experienced with yoga, so I actually went to my regular classes the whole time - just with increased modifications!! Prenatal classes are offered in some places too, but if you're in good shape already I think you'll be surprised. The first trimester you want to avoid twists (though I confess I didn't), and as you get further along you will not be able to do poses lying on your stomach. As long as you don't overwork or overheat yourself, and pay attention to what your body is telling you, there's not as many limitations as you might think. I carried my twins to full term and felt great the whole time - which I completely attribute to my yoga practice.

When I was having kids we didn''t do things like that, but times have changed. If you have a Yoga instructure she should be able to have you do easier things. I have watched TLC Baby Story and I have seen women on there talking about do yoga while they were pregenant. I would check with her or even your dr.
Usually if you have been doing it before you get pregenant you can still do it while you are pregenant. Good luck.

My cousin just went through the same thing with her little boy, who is about the same age. Turns out that he had some problems with his hearing, and had to have some tubes placed in his ears. I would check that out with your pediatrician before just bumping it down to her stubbornness.

Hi M.. I've been practicing yoga for 10 years and when I was pregnant, I continued to do yoga. (We have a class where I work.) I stopped doing yoga in my 2nd semester. The only poses I had to avoid were any abdominals and inversions. There are tons of prenatal yoga DVD's out there-- the one I used most was "Yoga Mama" and they show women in just about every stage of pregnancy doing yoga. I encourage you to continue the yoga-- it is good for you in that certain poses can strengthen the muscles you'll be using to deliver your baby. And, it's good for the baby-- when you are relaxed, the baby is too. My baby would be pretty active during the day, but during yoga, my deep breathing the stretching lulled him to sleep! Good luck with your pregnancy!

I loved Pre-Natal yoga with Shiva Rea - I got it at Barnes and Noble. Very easy to follow for a beginner and has three different ladies to show the variations for whatever trimester you may be in. I especially appreciated the mandatory relaxation at the end :o)

Leisa Hart's Prenatal Salsa & Fat Burning Yoga Video. This is my second pregnancy & I used it with my son (who is now 2 1/2) and I am 36 weeks pregnant & still using it. The yoga part is only 20 minutes, but it goes by fast & makes me feel like I did something. :) I hope you like it.

Check out Prenatal Yoga by the Movement Center. It has 3 20-minute routines that can be done together or separately and 3 guided meditations. I did this all through my pregnancy and had a fairly easy labor. LOVED it (the yoga video, not the labor :)). You can find it at www.prenatalyogadvd.com. It is a little spendy, but completely worth it.
