My family is moving the first of march, we only have 3 weeks to pack, YIKES! We need to get some moving boxes but I can not bring myself to pay $300+ for boxes, does anyone know where I can get some cheaper, even used moving boxes?
Thanks

What can I do next?

There is a yahoo group called "Freecycle". Everyone who posts on this website offers there items at no charge. As a member you may also post a wanted-post for moving boxes. I have seen so many people post moving boxes and packing material on this site.

Hi H.,

We are moving in a few weeks too, and the silliest thing ever to do is BUY boxes!!! When we moved from Seattle to LA, I went to a store called Fred Meyer, which is like Target, or maybe HEB in your area and I went to the grocery department- They gave me over 50 bananna boxes, which do have a top and bottom, but they also have a little open square in the top of them, but they come with a pretty thick cardboard inside them. I just used a box cutter to cut out the same size as the whole and covered it with the cardboard. I also went to furniture stores, like Costco home, or any furniture or lighting store and asked for boxes, there you can get boxes the size of wardrobe boxes and lots of different sizes for some of the odd sized objects you may be packing. The grocery store is your best bet though, especially if your local store may happen to know you. Good luck with your move, and don't pay a PENNY for boxes!!

Take care,

S.

Go to your walmart store close to you and ask them for boxes. Best to call around 8p.m and talk to overnight manager and ask them to save some for you for the morning time.

If you have a local Lane Bryant, they have plenty of boxes. They are not huge, but perfect for most household items. That's what we used when we moved.

Hey H.,
You can always go to like different stores and get the boxes that they have. When you go to the store and get the boxes its no charge they just give them to you.I use to work for Dollar General and the only thing we did with the boxes was break them down and throw them away.

You can register to get on freecycle.org, there's one for Houston, and our area (Cypress) there may be one for your specific area as well. Then post a WANTED for moving boxes. I see offers for them all the time, then you reply by email. If you are picked, you get directions to pick up. In addition, as you are going through your stuff, you are going to find a lot of stuff you don't want to move, and you can give it away on the same site. Believe it or not, there is someone out there who can use your 'trash'. Good luck with your move.

Check on Craigslist... when we moved I found TONS of boxes on there... and if they cost any money they usually cost $20. WELL worth it! :)

good luck!

Hi, I found that a great place to get boxes is from your local grocery store. If you call and find out there grocery receiving day they will gladly give you the empty boxes.

I have a friend that followed moving trucks. Once she found people that were moving in, she asked if she could come pick up their boxes in a few days. I also found lots of boxes on Sundays or Mondays at the school recycle bins. They weren't broken down so I knew the school couldn't get any money for them. I did a local move so I just flattened them when I was done and took them back to the bin.

Grocery stores, Target, Wal-Mart...most stores are willing to give you their boxes for free. Hospitals are another great place to find used boxes. H. that helps!

I might have some boxes for you. My son just moved and we offered the boxes to someone else, but if she hasn't picked them up yet, you can have them.

You might also check craigslist.org My son got all of his boxes free when he moved because someone generous was willing to pass their boxes along.
