Hi Moms - I'm doing the liquor store box thing, and checking out Craigslist, but am also looking for slightly larger boxes. Any ideas? Thanks!

What can I do next?

Try Walmart. They do all their stocking starting around 10:30 p.m and all boxes go directly to the back. It may be kinda late for ya, but we have had luck just roaming the isles and grabbing boxes. The employees don't mind, saves them from having to drag them to the back. Good luck.

Best Buy was very helpful to me. They wouldn't give me the boxes during store hours but the manager told me what time the boxes would appear in the trash bin and suggested that I come at that time. They man taking the large broken down boxes took them to my car instead of tossing them. There were several sizes of boxes already in their bin.

Make sure the bin (dumpster) is in a safe area first. Don't go into a back alley by yourself!

Be careful of getting boxes that had food stored in them and/or are laying outside. Cockroaches love to live in cardboard. I would keep checking Craigslist for them, I gave away my boxes after I moved. If you only need a few large boxes then pick some up at Home Depot, they are less than a dollar each.

FYI: I have moved a lot in my life and I strongly suggest not using too many large boxes. They are heavy and awkward to lift.

U-Haul owned U-Haul centers sell new boxes...and then have a spot for people to turn in their boxes and "free-cycle" them for others. May be worth a call to your local center.

Having just moved a couple months ago I was a box expert! I bought them at Lowes, and Home Depot for less than $1 each. But found the large ones too big to carry comfortably but a few were handy for blankets and quilts. If you really want free boxes go to the stores early and look around for shelf stocking near toilet paper, paper towels and see if they will give away some of the large boxes those items come in. Stay away from places like Dollar store and Big Lots, as those big boxes are poorly made cardboard and fall apart, tear easily, and disintegrate when damp. and have a lot more chance of carrying cockroaches and other bugs. Medical supplies come in large boxes sometimes and a pharmacy might give them away. Also fast food restaurants get things like buns, chips, and other foods in large boxes. Go ask there too.

I got some great boxes that were being thrown out at Pier 1 store. I asked the manager whether I could have them and they said sure. There were all sizes to very very large! Good Luck

I've always just gone to U-Hall. They do sell used boxes, and they have information and guides to help you estimate how many boxes and what sizes you will need.

To me it really is totally worth the expense.

Im not too sure if they have this by you or not. If so, you can sign up with freecycle online and put a post on there. Its a site where people give away their old things or things they dont need anymore and if you need something you can put a post on there, maybe someone will have a few they need to get off their hands :-) Good Luck!

My husband and I run a screen-printing business and we break down and recycle dozens of large boxes a day. They are really sturdy and great for moving. Check to see if you have a screen printer who is local and they might be able to help you out! **We do purchase our own custom printed boxes for re-packaging and not every company does this but it's worth a shot!

Banana boxes from your grocery store. They're the perfect size, and they come with lids. Do check them for critters though. :) Good luck!

I considered using www.treehuggerboxes.com when I moved last. They have some great deals. Call them first to see if they have the sizes you need. They deliver, but if you pick up they are almost downtown.
