I've lost 65 pounds (started at 225) and my husband has lost 105 pounds (started at 300+) and we've done it all through counting calories. It's way easier than points and after a while, you will quickly learn what foods keep you fuller, longer (mainly high-fiber foods, like apples, green/leafy veggies, high-fiber/low-sugar cereals, light popcorn, etc) or what foods give you "more bang for your calorie buck". I highly recommend using a free calorie counting website, just to get started and figure out how much you need to lose to be at a healthy weight and how many calories you should eat in a day. I've used http://caloriecount.about.com/. After a few weeks, you'll get the hang of it and you won't even have to think about it. For example, I try to eat about 1300 calories a day and I break it up into 3-4 meals a day: 250 breakfast, 400 lunch, 650 dinner (or 400 dinner & 250 evening snack). The calorie counting website I recommend also have forums if you have a question or need support as well as recipe ideas. I also highly recommend signing up for the Hungry Girl emails (just google it) and/or buying the Hungry Girl cookbooks. They have TONS of low-cal recipes that taste great. They love to take yummy restaurant items and make them healthy.
If you need any other hints or tricks or ideas, let me know. I've learned a lot in this weightloss journey and I'm always happy to share what I've learned.
