Looking for Ideas on Halloween Treats for Daycare

My son is in the 1yr old group and I'd like to do gift bags for all the kids in his class for Halloween. Does anybody have any ideas on what to put in the gift bags - I don't allow candy in my house, so that's ruled out (I'd be scared they'd choke anyway).

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Wow - thanks y'all!
I'm not a cook (even though I probably could have managed the rice krispie treats), so I went with the following ( all from everything's a dollar store):

Treat bags (20 bags for a dollar)
Stickers (couple of hundred which I cut up among the different bags)
Glow sticks (these come 5 to a pack so relatively cheap) - I removed the connectors as they looked like a choking hazard
Coloring book (these came 3 to a pack) - no colors though - confused about eating of the crayons
Spider rings

I think the kids liked it and I've already started on the christmas treat bags.

Hey B.! You might try some Crayons and maybe a small coloring book. These can be ordered from Oriental Trading. When my son was 1 he LOVED to play with those finger puppet monsters...also those can be bought at Oriental Trading. Hope this helps some!

One thing I did was create a treat bag for them that contained things like pacifiers, rattles, animal crackers, a small sippy cup, etc. At one, there's not a whole lot you can do food wise, not to mention the possibilities of food allergies. An idea instead of a "bag" would be do go to the dollar store and get sippy cups, decorate the outside with removable items like ribbon, stickers, etc. Then you could place a couple of small items inside. The top acts as a lid to the container. To make them more personal, you could use alphabet stickers & put each child's name on the side. If the cup is too small, you could get the small cardboard boxes with lids from the craft store & decorate those. Most come in squares or circles. Hope this helps.

I am only responding to Lynda's idea about giving crayons. At 12 months, crayons are inappropriate unless close adult supervision the entire time is implemented. ANYTHING that can fit down a toilet paper roll is a choking hazard. Infants learn at this age by "mouthing", and crayons or pieces of crayons are a choking hazard. No offense to the idea, Lynda, but as a pediatric nurse I can tell some horror stories;)

Party City near Hamilton Place mall has gift bag stuffers for all ages if you do not want to do food of any kind. We bought this plastic toy that makes a clapping noise for 69 cents. They have alot of stuff under a dollar.

Mine loved Halloween rings (spider ones especially), necklaces, masks (zoro like) etc from party city! They have a huge selection and many can fit into a small treat bag, which of course they have too. I myself am doing halloween cookies this year. A bit cheaper since I am plus a child from last year.
Have a great day!!!

Well there is alot of cool stuff that you can put into a treat bag if you don't like candy that is ok. But you can go to Wal-mart or to the doller tree, and they have all kinds of halloween stuff like strawls that have halloween stuff on them like pumpkins on them. You can also get the small coloring books. Get a box of small packed animal crackers and put one in each bag. But above all make it fun for you and your son. Let him help you all that he can.

B. Hi,

I had the same situation last year and I put two sugar cookies in little plastic cups with these clapper things. I got them at WalMart they are plastic and have a handle on one end and a plastic pumpkin on the other and a ball on each side of the pumpkin and make clapping noises. Also go to Kraftfoods.com they usually have great ideas.

First, make sure that what you get is not a choking hazard. Gummies are a choking hazard at this age. If they get stuck in the trachea, they are almost impossible to get out because they are so sticky. Toys with small parts are also choking hazards.

How about a small coloring book, stickers, cookies, rice krispy treats, granola bars, cheetos, teddy grahams, goldfish crackers, etc.
Good luck.

I have seen lots of little Halloween bags of pretzels that would probably be good. Raisins may work, too (unless they are a choking hazzard for that age.) My daughter is only 9 months, so I am not sure what is safe for that age group. I also agree with the cracker idea. Godd luck!

What about a cute Halloween cookie? You could make pumpkin shaped cookies, ice them, maybe put tiny little eyes on them (chocolate chips?)? Then you could inidividually wrap them in those little cellophane bags. Might be cute!

I would put in things like of the travel size...Like diaper rash cream...I know it's not a treat for them to eat but is a treat none the less...and you could also get grab bags of animal crackers....Basically you can use anything that a 1yr old would need if it comes in a travel size...Hope this helps

Hi! I was in your same predicament earlier this year at Easter time. I went to the Dollar Tree and purchased little packages of small toys...like mini frisbees (4 for $1), stretch little toy figures...then I did the small snack size packages of Chips Ahoy or Oreos...it's a sweet treat w/out it being "candy." Good luck and let me know what you end up doing...I can alwasy use ideas.

Hi B.!

My children are running into this same problem as no candy is allowed at school. Here are some of the items that have been suggested that we bring instead: Animal Crackers, Teddy Grahams, Goldfish, Trail Mix, pencils, erasers, stickers, pens, fun straws, rings, glow sticks, stickers...

Good luck!!!

Well you could do party favors instead like a plastic ball or even do something like Granola bars. Or maybe go to an all organic store and get treats there.

I work in a preschool that has a toddler and two yr old program, my 21 month old is in it. we actually perfer you dont bring candy. some moms bring a cookie in a little baggie thats tied up with ribbon and that way it goes home and parents are able to le thier child eat it when they like. also some healthy snacks. there are small little cracker packages and just ask yourself what you want your child to have and thats usually the best thing to og by.

Go to the dollar store and get a bunch of stuff from there! They usually have packs of things like little snakes, creepy crawlies, mini coloring books, stickers, mini slinkies, etc. You might be able to put a little bottle of bubbles in there and the parents can help them blow them. You can also put some play doh in as well. If not, just stick with little knick-knack type toys. Oh, and sometimes they have little toy cars and toy jewelry which are good ideas.
