Dear J.,
I am a licensed Esthetician (professional skin therapist) and RN and own a skin care and acne clinic in the Denver area. I have lots of experience with this situation. Dark spots from acne are very differerent than other types of hyperpigmentation or dark spots since they are a result of previous inflammation from the acne lesions. Therefore most fading serums, lighteners, etc. do not work very well for these kind of spots, so save your money! They are not true scaring either since they will eventually fade away, but it can take a long time. I have my clients use ice 2-5x a day to decrease the inflammation as soon as a blemish appears. If you do this then the blemish will not leave a mark after it has healed and it also helps the blemish heal faster. The marks/spots you have now are a result of the previous inflamation. Depending on how new they are then ice may still do the trick. Put an ice cube in a baggy or paper cup with water into the freezer and run it over your blemishes for 2 minutes/count to 120. If you squeeze or pick an area, then you must ice asap to get the red/inflammation down so it won't leave a spot later.
You may also email directly and tell me more about your skin and what your skin tone is (such as light or dark, etc.) and I may be able to recommend some other ideas: ____@____.com
Note: If anyone has "stubborn, resistant" acne that is reading this, then I can help you. Feel free to email me with your questions.
