As a student counselor I suggest that if you are going with insurance: call and talk with someone at the counseling office, tell them what you are looking for and ask if the counselor is a licensed LMFT (Licensed Marriage and Family Counselor) or a LPC (Licensed Professional Counselor) with experience with couples (most will have this). You might also check and see if the cities have community agencies, free or on a sliding scale. You can also try the phone book and ask the same questions you would if looking for insurance. You might also ask what the counselor's theoretical orientation is, and ask them to explain what that means. Good luck- also know that it takes a few sessions to know if you can work with that counselor.
