Looking for Double Stroller Suggestions

We're expecting baby no. 2 in Feb. Our first daughter will be 19 mo. old when the baby arrives. We're in the process of researching double strollers and trying to figure out what is going to suit our needs- there are so many options! I'm leaning towards trying to find a good dbl. jogger, mostly because I really like my Bob single jogger now... I don't jog a ton w/ it- mostly use it for walks, but it's so much easier to manuever than our Graco that we purchased to be able to initially snap the carrier into. That said, I've heard that side by sides pose challenges b/c the older child is often poking at the younger one, etc. The graco dbl strollers seem nice b/c we can put our infant carrier in it, but doesn't the child in back eventually get frustrated that there is a seat in front of them- my daughter seems to love to look out and around now... and I'm assuming baby no. 2 eventually will as well?!

Any thoughts/suggestions would be great!

What can I do next?

I have the Graco Duo Glide. I love it. My sons are 18 months apart. I love it because you can snap the car seat into it either the front or the back. My sons are now 2 and 6 months old and we put the baby in the back because it lays all the way down so he can take a nap and my other son likes to look and climb in and out of the stroller

The double wide jogger is not just a problem because the two children poke each other, but also for two other reasons. They will not stroll through a store aisle, and when the weight is not evenly distributed (as it would be with twins, but not with different aged siblings) you have a hard time steering it.
Look for a regular double stroller that has "stadium" seating, so that the back seat is slightly higher than the front seat. Put the older child in the front while the baby is still in the carrier. By the time the baby outgrows the carrier, the older child will be tall enough to sit in the back and see over the front seat.

L.: I started out with a peg perego aria double with my twins. I loved it at first, but now that the twins are 2, I can barely push it since they are total 50lbs. We moved on to a mountain buggy urban double and have never looked back! It's the best stroller. It turns on a dime, goes over any type of terrain and best of all, fits through any doorway. I think the bob is pretty similar to the MBUD, so I think you might be on the right track. Not sure if the bob has a fixed front wheel or pivot, but the pivot wheels are what make out stroller really useful. Hope this helps, there are sooo many double strollers out there, it can be overwhelming!!

well i do have the new graco double stroller which is front and back. my 2 and half yrs old sit in front that hold up to 50 lbs and my 2 mos old baby in carrier seat in back and it push good. good basket storage. i love use it when i go to mall, zoo, etc etc. but for walk, not too bad. we are considering buy side by side jogger stroller for my daily walk. i cant do daily walk with that graco stroller. i just like to have 2 stroller because u cant really use side by side stroller to stores, because hard to go thru the door, depends on what kind side by side stroller. newborn usually cant be in jogger stroller til after 2 mos old or 3, depend on what kind jogger stroller and most doesnt have tray for carrier to snap in.

and latelllly my 2 and half year old son who will be 3 in end of jan is uhm 40 lbs and it is getting heavier for me to push him in stroller. i tend put my 2 mos old daughter in my maya wrap and use single stroller for my son. so it is all depends on what stroller, i sugguest u take test drive on every stroller at babies r us or local baby stores. good luck.

Hi L., I think the Bob stroller's are pretty great(but $$$, so you don't want to buy it for nothing!), but you should consider when you will really be using the stroller. If you are due in Feb. - how often will you be putting a "new" baby in the stroller? For a walk around the mall? I suggest using a sling for those new baby months. I didn't use one much with my now 3 y.o., but my 4 month old lives in his, b/c he just needs to when you are trying to mother 2 at once. By the time my daughter was 2 - she started to object to long stroller walks or runs. She wanted to walk too. You might be able to wear your new baby and push your daughter in your single stroller and may find that by the time you are wanting to put the little one down - the older child will be more apt to want to walk.
We have one of those stand and sit strollers (By Babytrend, I think). Granted our daughter is 3, but she loves it. The infant carrier can go in the front and she sits in the back in a "big-kid" seat. It's pretty good on off-roading type trails, but only if both kids are in it - other wise it's too lite and bouncy. I use my old jogging stroller for pre-school morning walks and around town - when she wants to walk herself.

I would just wait until you have both kids here to figure out your needs and what will work for you guys before laying down a bunch of money for something you don't really need, or isn't practical for your needs.

Congratulations and good luck!

we bought the phil and teds double jogger for our now 1 and 3 year olds. It is front back, instead of side to side and we love it. It is great for walking on trails as well. It is a little pricey, around $500 but you get what you pay for. The front to back is so much better for getting through smaller spaces, when you are shopping, etc. and the back seat is equipped for a newborn and folds all the way down. Then adjusts as the baby gets bigger. Go to Tiny Totland in mancheser and they will show it to you.

When I was expecting baby #2 I bought the Graco double stroller. I've used it maybe 5 times lol. Layne is 2 years 3 months and baby Andy in 7 months. Layne hates riding in a stroller so he always walks, and Andy was in an Infantino front carrier until he got too big and now he's in a structured backpack carrier. I can't push a stroller AND chase a toddler, so using a carrier was the logical choice. Not to mention I much prefer to be able to swing my arms when I'm walking and he likes being so close to me. And I can wear Andy in the backpack around the house and do chores.

L.-

I am going through the same search. The only trick to my search is that my daughter will be almost 3 (if she was younger, I had the stroller picked out). I really enjoy the Phil and Ted stroller.

http://www.philandteds.com/nz/sportdouble_07_1.htm

A friend has it and we put both of our 2.5 year old daughters in it and they love it. Neither one gets bored and many times they will both fall asleep. The only draw back is that it is very expensive.

I also have a Bob Ironman (a jogger with a fixed front wheel) and I love that stroller, but, I have not run with it as much as I thought I would. Given that, I wish that it had a rotating front wheel (which makes steering it much easier). The Phil and Ted's wheel is rotating. It is much easier to steer, and a bit smaller than my Bob.. It is really a smooth ride for the kids. The only reason I am thinking about not getting it is the price tag. If my daughter outgrows the stroller in 2 month, it will be an expensive 2 months.. If she uses it for a year, it would be worth it..

Good luck and congrats on the growing family!!

My son was 18 months old when my daughter arrived. I bought, and LOVE, a Valco double jogger from Magic Beans in Brookline. It is the only stroller we use. It has a carseat adapter, so when my daughter was in her infant carseat I just snapped it in the stroller with my son at her side. I have never had any trouble with the two children side by side. My son is now 4 and my daughter 2 1/2. We still use this stroller daily! I really love my Valco stroller. It is worth checking out!

When I researched options for a double stroller for my two (currently 4 and 2 years old), we chose the Phil & Ted's. Watching people in malls and stores maneuver their strollers, I definitely didn't want a tandem stroller as it was too long to get around. Nor did I want a side by side because they are too wide and simply don't fit around racks in stores. The Phil & Teds has a "jumpseat" that can be moved to accommodate two kids. When the baby is an infant, there are two options: I believe they sell a bar of some sort to hook the baby carrier onto. Option B - put the baby in the back of the stroller - either laying down or with the car seat inside. My Graco baby carrier fit right inside the back of the stroller with no attachments - easy to carry baby from place to place while still in carrier - it just slid right into position. As he got older, I would place him in there laying down. Then when he was older, we began using the jumpseat. I have been EXTREMELY SATISFIED with this stroller. We receive rave reviews from everyone everywhere we go on how unique it is, how smart the design is, and how maneuverable it is (there is one wheel in front which makes turning the stroller EASY). It's easy to use, doesn't require massive strength to maneuver (it's actually much easier to move than the Graco I have), smart looking, and has accessories (cup holder attachment and side saddle bags to store items in). Since the design accommodates two kids easily with no bulky stroller, I recommend those two accessories since with two kids there isn't as much "cargo space" as in traditional strollers. Bottom line - we LOVE this stroller. It's well worth the money - and I see these strollers more and more each day.

Here's a link for you:
http://www.philandteds.com/
This link has a moving frame that shows two kids in the stroller.

Everyone has their own price range and a feel for what they are looking for. I was more than happy to pay a bit more for something that was easy to move, easy to convert, and easy to take in & out of the car. Knowing I didn't want a tandem or side-by-side stroller, this one has been perfect for us.

Good Luck!

I have the Graco Duo Glide deluxe lite ... and love it!

I can manuver tight areas which is very important with the many Dr's appointments my children often go to.

I am a very tiny woman and I can handle this stroller by myself which was also very important.

My one and only complaint on it is that the basket underneath doesn't hold up as well as the rest of the stroller because it is a netting that rips easily.

The seats fold down or recline to give the children a variety of positions. You can also use the Graco snugride car seats with it.

My children are 3 and 20 months (adjusted age of 16 mo). Since my youngest was extremely premature at birth we have found this stroller essential to getting around ~ the adjustability really made a difference with her many special needs when we brought her home from the NICU. Our 3 year old is so comfortable in it too.

We have also used this stroller for long walks at the park and have been very pleased with how it handles "off road". Grass, gravel and other bumpy surfaces don't seem to be an issue.

Best wishes!!

Hi L., I bought the graco double stroller when my son was born and my daughter was 18 mo at the time. It worked great as we were able to snap the carrier into the back seat. The only thing is that we really did not use it for very long. My son is now 18 months and daughter is 3 and she will not sit in a stroller for long and honestly it looks a little cramped for her. So she usually just walks with me and we put the little one in an umbrella stroller for quick trips.

I bought the BOB Revolution Duallie Jogging stroller. It's very expensive but I have gotten my money's worth. All I do is go for walks around the neighborhood with it and I can even walk my 85lb dog too...it moves so smoothly. You can buy an adapter for it so the car seat can go on one side. I have another stroller which is great, Kolcraft Contours tandem stroller which I keep in my car...I basically use this one for shopping or errands since it's easier to fit through small aisles. I guess you just have to figure out what you'll be doing more of. To be honest, I don't get out to do much shopping with a 2 yr. old and 6 month old!

We have been very happy with our Graco (front/back) dbl stroller. I have a dbl jog from a friend and I do not care for it. It is side by side and just big to move around places other than outside. The front wheel is always locked and does not have an option to unlock it for walks, so taking corners on the sidewalk prove to be more challenging.
I have found that with a 3 and 1 yr olds the Graco is getting heavy to move...so a jog stroller would help as they are lighter in weight...so if I have to buy a jog stroller I would get a front wheel that locks and unlocks...I am not sure I would get a front/ back jogger as they seem to have very obstructed views....

My boy's were two years apart. We were gifted a front and back stroller. It worked wonders! With it we could move. What i mean by "move" is in the market, mall, going for a walk or just turning corners. Babies R' Us now sells the steering wheel that can attach to the front-seat position so when you are tending to the newborn in the back, which the car seat fits into, the "driver" can continue w/o any thought.
Best wishes

My two are 21.5 months apart, and we use the Phil & Ted's stroller. It is not a jogging stroller (because you can't lock the front wheel I think), but I love using it for walks. The wheels are big enough to navigate most rough terrain, and I can steer it one-handed. The front-to-back design also means you can fit into more tight spaces, and both kids seem to be able to see really well. It is pricey, but well worth it to me to be able to get my kids around easily. I love that the seats are high enough for kids to sleep comfortably in them - the short seat backs on the Graco strollers were one reason I didn't get them since both my kids love to sleep in their strollers and with the Graco double strollers.

Two downsides: you have to take off one seat to fold it up in the car, and when there is a kid on the bottom seat you lose most of the basket space (I can still stuff a medium-size diaper bag in there, but that's it).

Hi,
If you like your B.O.B.- get a B.O.B. Revolution Duallie. We have one and LOVE it ! It's so easy to push and has so much room for the kids! My almost 6 year old still has room to spare.
We also have a Peg Perego with room for a child to stand on the back. This was nice when the youngest was born- I could clip the baby seat in and my 2 y/o could stand on the back. It was nice for shorter trips or around the mall.
Good luck!

Hey L.! Good question, I have been asking myself the same thing...LOL. My sister in law has a double wide she said I could have but I think double wides would be a pain if you want to go shopping or something. I have seen some really cool ones front/back but very expensive & not sure if it is worth the money. Let me know if you make a decision & if you like what you get. My son will be here in 4 days so we need to act quick. My 21 month old would prefer to walk anyway right now (I have a harness for him) but I plan on using the carriage we have for him & a sling for the new baby but that will only last a few months!! Thanks a million & good luck with your new little one.

Hi L.! I am expecting #2 in 7 wks and have a 14 mo old so I was in the same boat as you. I ended up with the BOB Revolution Duallie & absolutely love it. Although my own little one has not yet arrived my girlfriends with other children the same agae as my son have joined us on many walks as well as my 3 yr old nephew. All ride very nicely together. There is a divider between them and as you know the BOB has a deep seat so they would hve to really make an effort to "bug" each other. Iwill also say that I am surprised where this stroller fits; in stores, through doorways etc. It does also have an adapter bar far an infant carseat.

My thought is that if you already ahve a BOB, its going to be hard to live without one!
Good Luck!

We have a Phil & Ted's and LOVE it. It's narrow enough to get through doors and other tight spots. The kids love it too. We loved when our youngest was a little baby and could just fully recline in the bassinet portion - she'd just fall off to sleep in it. It's a bit pricey, but fully worth it. Good luck!

My daughter was 23 months when her brother was born and I kept her in the single BOB stroller we had and carried him in our front pack for walks for the first 10 months. It worked well for us and I didn't have to get a stroller that held a baby carrier. Then we bought a side by side double jogger stroller and love it. Granted, I don't take it shopping, but it has been wonderful for us. The kids like being able to see each other and help each other with snacks and other things (they're now 2 and 4 years old)and easily climb in and out on their own. They do poke or kick each other on occasion, but it's happened maybe 4 times so far (keeping my fingers crossed that it stays that infrequent!).
