N.L. asks from Carrollton, GA

My family of 4 just moved to Carrollton from CT. I have been at home with my 2 girls for 4 weeks now and am about to loose my mind. The 4 year old was in preschool in CT, but doesn't meet the cut-off down here til next year for preschool. So my 2 girls are not in any kind of routine and fight most of the day. We are on a very tight buget due to only 1 income and lots of leftover bills from CT. My husband works about 55 hrs a week so we are home all day. I am looking for any suggestions (cheap or free) as to where I can take my angels to get some energy out of their systems. We are near the Villa Rica side of Carrollton off Bankhead. Thanks in advance!

What can I do next?

Hi N.! When I moved to Smyrna from out of town, someone told me bout MOPS (Mothers of Preschoolers). It is a wonderful outlet for moms AND kids. They meet all over the city so go to www.mops.org (I think or google it) and put in your zip to find a group near you. It is a Christian based group, but anyone is welcome. At mine, they have a hot, delicious breakfast and stimulating conversation for moms (with various speakers from topics as diverse as gardening to organizing to self-defense and getting along with your spouse). The kids have a program/play date at the same time in a separate area. So you get a break but it is fun for all! I highly recommend it. Please let me know what you think if you go and try it! Dearly, G.

Hi N.!

Welcome to Atlanta! I understand what you're going through completely. My kids are a little older at 5 and 7 so they are in elementary school now but they've been home for two weeks for break and I was actually grateful that school started back today!!

I agree completely with the post about MOMS Club. I just filled out my renewal this morning to send out (my 4th year of being involved in the Suwanee-East chapter). It was exactly what I was looking for. Especially if you're brand new to the area-- You automatically have 40-50 friends (depending on the size of the chapter) and lots of things are planned on the calendar-- most of them being free. The kids play while you get to make friends and have adult conversation. You can get great advice about preschools as well when you need it because some or most have already done the research and they're glad to share the information. You can get on momsclub.org if you want to check out the group as a whole or you can email ____@____.com to get in touch with the Membership VP for that chapter. You pick and choose what you want to do and playgroups are wonderful for your sanity!!! Even though my kids are in school all day I still want to be a member-- they have book club and meet for breakfast or lunch or coffee and moms night out that I still like to take part in. There is something for everybody!

I know you had mentioned finances being tight but you might want to check out pricing for just your 4 year old at preschool. It won't be the state aided Georgia pre-K program but depending on how many days she goes it can be reasonable for a few mornings a week to have the girls split up for a few hours and them they look forward to seeing each other in the afternoon. Again, the ladies in the MOMS Club chapter can give you some information if that is an option for your family.

Good luck with what you decide to do! R.

International MOMS(Moms Offering Moms Support)Club is another great organization to get involved in. There are playgroups and fun activities each week to participate in that are nice for both moms and children. It's a good way to meet other SAHMs and children for your little ones to interact with. The annual dues is $20.00. I am a member of the Covington chapter and know a girl who moved to Villa Rica a couple years ago and joined their chapter; she recently moved back to this area and rejoined our chapter. If you need more information on how to join, I can get contact info for you.

N.,

You should also check with your local libraries. Many libraries in my area offer free Children's Programs (i.e. Baby Time, Toddler Time, Preschool Enrichment, etc.) My girls love it. And because we are at the library at least once per week, we have gotten into the habit of checking out books and DVDs on a regular basis. My girls love it!

Good Luck!

Welcome to Georgia! I am a single mother, so, I will say be encouraged. Please let me know if there is anything I can do to assist you. Have you ever thought about your own business and/or doing childcare? These may be options to consider for you. I enjoy and love networking, so, please let me know. Single motherhood is not easy. I have learned to roll with the punches but not accept the hits. Its the best thing to do when the moment of elasticity hits you. It helps sometimes and hurts. Smile. Keep the faith!

Hi, This information may not apply to you, but when my friend moved to GA, her child wasnt old enough to begin K under GA law. However, there is a "grandfather clause" exception, so to speak, so they allowed her in. Just FYI
