Looking for a Holistic Doctor to Deal with Female Issues.

I am 43 and haven't had a period in about 100 days. I have taken pregnancy tests and am not pregnant. My OB is hesitant to run a hormone check and wants to prescribe Birth Control to try to regulate my system. My husband had a vasctomy so I really don't need birth control, and my family has a strong history of breat cancer, so I really don't want to go the birth control route. I told my doctor that so she recommended the ring, which has the lowest hormones on the market, but I have two friends who have tried the ring and didn't like it one had never ending bleeding, and the other had horrible cramps. Yuck!!! Because of my family history, I really don't feel comfortable with birth control anyway, and was thinking maybe a holistic doctor might be the way to go.

Thanks!

Hi Stephanie
I am 38 and the same thing happened to me last year. No 'AF' for 3 months and I was not pregnant either, nor on the pill. I am otherwise really regular. I went to see my doc and she said 'I don't think you ovulated' and she said I could either wait and see or she could prescribe a hormone supplement to take over a period of a few days to 'jump start' my cycle. It wasn't the pill though. There were a few potential side effects if I recall, so I opted to wait and I eventually had a period about a week later. But I also have to say that I think a large part of why I missed my period was because of stress. Are you otherwise regular? It might be something to think about. I am not sure why your doc is hesitant to do hormone checks; its a simple blood test as far as I know and it might give some answers...?
Anyway, as far as the holistic approach goes, I would DEFINITELY look into that. I am currently seeing an acupuncturist for a few issues, including fertility. She is a fertility specialist and also a nutritionist. I can't recommend her highly enough. I have a couple of other friends who see/have seen her and they love her too. Her name is Laurie Morse. www.lauriemorse.com She is located on Jutland Ave, near to the Costco on Morena Blvd (Bay Park/Bay Ho area). Please tell her I sent you if you go see her. She is AWESOME. I feel better than I have in YEARS. BTW, I live in Serra Mesa too. If you want to talk more please let me know! I love meeting new families in my neighborhood.
Best of luck! -Suzanne

Hi Stephanie,

I am a Holistic Health Practitioner. I am trained in Chinese Medicine and will be a licensed acupuncturist this fall. I have a practice in Ocean Beach. I love treating OBGYN issues. Chinese Medicine (which includes massage and therapies other than just acupuncture) is excellent at treating these issues. It's helped me to regulate my periods, not get mood swings, and I barely get cramps now. I have a coupon on this website for 10% off the first visit. My web address is www.sunsetcliffsbodytherapies.com. If you check it out, it extensively explains what I do and what the therapies are. My number is ###-###-####. If you have any questions, feel free to call.

Have you tried Ada Mama Holistic Health in Encinitas? They have an excellent reputation and specialize in women's health. They have Medical doctors, herbalists, acupuncturists, and many other practitioners there who work together for each patient. Good luck. Given your age and familial risk factors I don't think I'd be comfortable with hormone therapy either, especially if the problem hasn't been identified yet.

Stephanie,

I have a fantastic acupuncturist, whom I consider to be my primary care physician. She helped me with painful female issues years ago when my ob/gyn was giving me options of surgery or birth control that stopped my periods.

Her name is Marie Kastner, www.circleofliving.com, located in University Heights. She is highly experienced and knowledgable with female issues, and has great results with hormone alternative therapies. She is truly a healer; and a realist, if she cannot help you or feels there is a bigger issue going on than she can deal with she will refer you to a doctor or another therapy.

She was unbelievable in helping me through a high risk pregnancy, keeping my levels from reaching dangerous zones. You can always schedule for a consultation, or speak with her first to make sure this is the right avenue for you.

Good luck.

Have you been checked for thyroid issues?? I would definitely get a full blood work up before going on any kind of medication.. that is weird that the OB didn't want to run a test or anything! :(

Stephanie,

I don't know much about MENopause.. except that it can start in the early 40's and I have two sisters ( I have 4) that started early MP in their 40's. I myself am approaching 40 and I am already experiencing longer stretches of periods.. mine so far are about every 35 days.. and Im starting with the night sweats. Are you sleeping hot.. and feeling like you need to throw the covers off? Maybe you are simply starting early... My sisters started on an over the counter SOY product called Estroven and they swear by it. I have a girlfriend who has a period every other month, and is a raving B#@###.. and she is starting Estroven this week, I begged her to, to see if her symptoms can be relieved, she just turned 43. We have to remember to trust our bodies, and realize they are doing what mother nature tells them to do, even if it's not in textbook order. Some girls start bleeding at 10 and some, like me, start at 15... unless you are suffering from some other strange symptoms, let nature be, so my suggestion here would be pay close attention to other areas, night sweats, vaginal dryness, mood swings and such... maybe medicate with your holistic healing supplements. AND DON"T go on any birth control. It's not worth the risk. Maybe God is blessing you with the no period things... :) Here is the website for estroven, and it talks about early MP and what and how the product can help... I'm sure I'll be needing it soon, too! Good Luck.. www.estroven.com

You are only 43 and are starting peri(sic) menopause? WOO HOO. If you don't have any other symptoms and nothing else is wrong you are one lucky girl!! Take your time, the body does, and see what happens. If you are feeling well and the Dr finds nothing wrong welcome to the club of one set of underwear. Where you don't worry if you can go swimming or not!! Listen to what your body says.
