Looking for a Great Photographer

I really want to get professional photos taken (which are long overdue!) of my kids, and I am seeking recommendations for a really great photographer. I want to the cost to be reasonable, and most importantly, I want the negatives to convey with the price! Does anyone have anyone they have used and really liked (who also gives you the negatives)?

What can I do next?

Katie Garlock with Portraitions (www.portraitions.com) is wonderful! In fact, she is coming to our home today to take family pictures. She travels to where you are so you don't have to get the kids dressed up and try to keep them happy and clean by the time you get to a studio. It also allows the family to be captured in an atmosphere they are comfortable with and it shows in the final picture. It's so easy with Katie. I know she does digital photography so there are no negatives but I'm sure you can get the disc from her. Tell her A. referred you.

We've LOVED Portrait Innovations in Fairfax. There is a package where you get to keep/use/print the negatives. The photographers there work really well with kids, and they always run a great $10 package, even though we always end up spending so much more.

If you are looking for a photographer to come to you to take professional pics, I enjoy looking at Jennifer Burns Photography website. It's pricey though, much more so than a studio, but I guess reasonable considering the quality.

We use KJ Anderson Photography
www.karenandersonpix.smugmug.com

We have used Karen 4 times and she is AWESOME. Her portraits are beautiful. The reasons we like her:
-She is great with the kids. She has a very calm personality and doesn't get frazzled when the kids aren't cooperating- she calms ME down.
-She will travel to your home or an outdoor setting.
-She will retouch the portraits. She also does some amazing things- she cropped out a baby bottle because we loved the portrait except that my son was drinking a bottle. It doesn't sound hard, but it was.
-she does digital photography- you are able to get the disc (rather than negatives)

It definitely costs a little more than Walmart/JC Penney etc. But it is so worth it because of the beautiful pictures that you will get.

We have ALL ours done by Emily Korff.

Please tell her J. referred you- but she is absolutely amazing and I never felt rushed. Even if my kids had meltdowns, she gently waited them out and caught images of my kids that really captures who I SEE them as.

She would rather you have wonderful photos than to have a quick session. SHe does in studio and has GREAT places to do outdoor settings too. She will even come to you (depending where you are.) But she is really well known here where I am- but not outrageous priced.

Hi R.,

A friend of mine is setting up a photography business, and she is an awesome photographer! She took pics of my kids recently and they were absolutely fabulous. She also took sets of photos of several friends' kids, and all raved about her work. You can email her at ____@____.com to get on her contact list for when she mails out her launch specials (should be later this month). Her name is Angela Goodhart. She has three kids of her own and she's wonderful with children. Good luck!

Have you considered Wal-Mart's photo studios? They are fantastic, very reasonable, and you can buy the CD which has all the photos from the session (I think most photographers use digital these days, not film/negatives.)

We go to the one in Fair Lakes, VA, but they are at most of the Wal-Marts. They also have a photo club which you pay to join ($10-$20) but then you get 10% off each of your orders and a free 8x10 with each visit/order. They also have regular specials where you get 30+ photos of one pose in all different sizes for about $8 (and sometimes less!)

We go every season and for special occasions and I never spend more than $100 (I get a LOT of pictures and several different poses) and I've always been really happy with them.

We use Potrait Innovations, I'm not sure where you live but they are a chain and you can find locations on their website. Their photographers are great and they are VERY reasonably priced. They usually have a deal going where you only pay $10 and you get a bunch of photos. There is no sitting fee and if you want to buy more they have additional packages to add more options on. I've never spent over $100 there and always leave there happy.
