Looking for a Good Vacuum to Purchase

Hello Ladies, tomorrow I am going to purchase a new vacuum. I have been doing some reading of all the reviews for the different brands. It seems the Bissell Healthy Home Vacuum (model 5770) has the best reviews, and it's in my price range. I just wanted to know if anyone has this vacuum, and what they think of it. I am very brutal with my vacuums (part b/c I'm clumsy, part b/c I'm always rushing when I clean the house), so I definatley need one that can handle tough use. I have a dog and a cat, who both shed a lot. I have hardwood and carpet, and lots of stairs. I also have a 10 month old baby who crawls EVERYWHERE, so I need a vacuum that will get the floors really clean. Let me know what you all think.

So What Happened?

I know the Dyson is a superb machine, that's the one I am replacing. I was fortunate enough to get one for my wedding as a gift. I LOVED it, but the motor blew, and it would of cost $300 to get it fixed. I would love to have been able to just buy a new Dyson, but it's a bit too pricey for us right now. I did go ahead and buy the Bissell. It took a little while to get used to it, but once I did it was fine. It's actually very similar to the Dyson, just a few more knobs to turn. Thanks for all your advise.

The Dyson Animal is a little on the expensive side but totally worth it. I've got a Siberian Husky (plus 2 more dogs and a cat) and it gets everything out in ONE pass. It is a little heavier than some but totally worth it. I've never had mine loose suction, clog and I haven't broke it. Oh... I've also got hair down past my rear which I seem to leave everywhere, it doesn't tie up the beater bar like I've had happen with some vacuums.

I dont have that one, but I recently bought an electrolux, the canister type. It was expensive(about $520), but i also have a dog, cat, young child, hardwood, and carpet. It doesnt use bags, and has a built in hepa filter. I also really wanted the dyson, but it just seemed too heavy.

K. - My husband and I purchased a Rainbow vacuum the 1st year we were married and I still use it. This August we will have been married 30 years. I've had it repaired once. Yes, they are expensive but well worth the investment especially if you are tough on your vacuum and it's much healthier for your family. Talk about power; if you have pets it will clean up the nastiest rugs and carpets in just a few strokes. OMG. This sounds like a sales pitch but truly, it is the best.

Love the Dyson Animal too! I have 3 cats, 6 at one point, and it is great. It is good on wood floors too, it doesn't spray the litter around either. We were going through vacuums one per year until we got the Dyson and have had it for 3 years. It makes the job kind of fun, is that sad?

I've had quite a few vaccuums in my life. The one we have now - the Dyson Animal - is the BEST!! The commercials say that it never gets clogged....trust me, it doesn't! My husband accidentally sucked up a sock once and it just zipped right into the discard chamber. We just reached in and pulled the sock out. LOL The Dyson machines are expensive, but if you pay $600 and have it for 5 years, that's $120 per year. If you keep it for 10 years, that's $60 per year.

Other vaccuums cost $200-400 and they don't last you 5 years. So you end up spending more money overall.

Good luck finding the one that is right for you!

Hi K.
I am also brutal with my vacuums and have broken many. We have 2 boxers who shed a lot so I feel your pain there. I know it is a lot of money up front but we went and bought the Dyson pet hair vacuum. We have had it for a year and I have yet to break it.....I even know how to clean it(b/c it is so easy!) This vacuum picks up EVERYTHING!!!! Wow, I could be a rep for this company! Just thought I would give some input.

I have a Dyson. It w asrather pricey but definatly worth it. I just moved from the desert wher eit is very dusty and the filter was the best. I have the base model and it has never clogged and worked wonders. We use to go throught 2 vacuums in a year because of our dogs and their hair and I am happy to say the dyson has already lasted long enough to pay for itself.

I LOVE the Dison vacuum. Never loses suction, no bags or filters! Plus the one with the roller ball is easy to manuver! Not trying to sound like a commercial...but its great! They do have different models too

The new Kenmore Progressive vac got great reviews from Consumer Reports and it's around $300. We just got it and it's great. It's not a self propelled model though. It has a dirt sensor and a "True HEPA" filter, which I like. We have a cat and it gets up all the hair. It is reportedly equivalent to the Dyson, but less expensive.

Hi! I know you mentioned a price range, but.....

I LOVE my Dyson!!! Yes it's pricey, very pricey!! And I thought the same thing, but I talked myself into it because it was my hubby's b-day and that's what he wanted!!

So I bought it and LOVE it. I can go right from carpet to tile without a problem. It really sucks up all the dog hair, instead of just blowing it around like most!

We were buying a new sweeper once ever other year due to loosing suction and such. I don't see that happening with this one. On top of it it has a warrenty about suction.

There's no filters. You can just rinse out all the parts. Its GREAT... We've had it for over 2 years now and it still hasn't lost suction.

We just bought a dyson 2-3 weeks ago and it is an awesome vacuum. we got the dyson animal (DC17). I was shocked at how much stuff it sucks up. We have 2 dogs and 1 cat. The only downfall about the vacuum is the price. I paid almost $600 at Best Buy for it. We have a lot of friends who have the Dyson and they swear by it. So far I am very impressed!

I had the hoover, which was just like the Bissell, different brand. It died, of course we have two dogs that really put it to the test. I just bought a Dyson. It was some extra money, but I have to say, I love it! I can actually see the difference.
We got the Animal, because we have the two dogs. The normal one however would be fine if you don't have pets which is about $130 less. Also, they have "The Ball" models that make it easier to turn and manuver. I however, don't find it hard to turn a vacuume, so I passed on that feature, saving more money as well.

We had the Bissell and it was great. We also have a dog who sheds A LOT. Recently I had a door to door sales man come by with a Kirby. He did the demonstration and it made my vacuum look like a kid's toy. We purchased the Bissell before because it was in our price range. I had wanted a Dyson but there was no way we had the money up front. The Kirby people have a payment plan. If you're willing to spend the money on a dyson you might as well get a Kirby, it blows the Dyson out of the water. Good luck on your search. =o)
