Dyson Really Worth All That Money?

No. I have 3 dogs (a shepherd, a collie mix, and a shedding terrier) as well as two cats, and I go through vacuums as though they were disposable. A friend was raving about her Dyson so she let me borrow it. It was fine. It did work better than my Bissell (also bagless), which I had only had a year. However, the price tag terrified me since I didn't know if it would really last that long, and I wasn't $400 worth of impressed, so I went on Consumer Reports (Dyson doesn't have great reviews, btw, when compared with other vacuums), and decided to buy their "best buy," the Hoover Widepath (a bagged vaccuum). http://www.amazon.com/Hoover-Widepath-Upright-Vacuum-U514... It cost me $75 (several years ago), and I LOVE it. The suction beats out all the vacuums I've ever used, bagless and otherwise, including the Dyson, and I've had it for several years without any change in quality. I'm thrilled, and thinking of buying another one (since they're so cheap) to keep upstairs so that I never have to carry it up and down the stairs. I recommend you look into it, at least. Good luck.

The last time I saw the Consumer Reports ranking of vacuum cleaners (a year ago), Dyson was not high on the list. (Neither was the other expensive one -- Oreck.) Usually one of the Hoover Wind Tunnels is at the top of the list.

We have a Kenmore from Sears and its great. It was about $300 and rated the best in Comsumer Reports. I wouldnt get the Dyson. The reviews werent that great and its way over proced in my opinion.

I had the red dyson (not sure of the model name). I bought it for just under $300 refurbished. It worked great at first and then over the years definitely lost suction, it made me mad as I had never spent that much on a vacuum before. Plus, I htink because it's bagless, more of the dust and junk gets into the air as opposed to the bag type.

I just recently bought a Kirby, yes, it had a hefty price tag ($800 for the demo model) but it SUCKS like crazy! I LOVE it! I'm hoping this is the last vacuum I ever buy. It also shampoos the carpet, you can reverse the airflow and use it to push a clog out of your drain or put an attachment on and clean your computer keyboard! It's made of cast aluminum so it's a bit heavier but the thing is SOLID, none of this cheap plastic!

So if you're gonna spend $500, you might as well spend a little more and buy something that will last a whole lot longer!

No. To buy a vacuum that will last, go to a vacuum store. Don't buy from Wal-Mart/Target/Etc. Miele, Eureka, and the other brands are waaaay more worth your money.

I went through vacuums every couple years, spending $100-200 at a shot. When the last one went out I packed it up and took it to real vacuum store. They showed my what looked like a hunk of junk vacuum and insisted it was the best. They vacuumed up a bunch of pet hair off the carpet, and it was impressive. Then I ran my current vacuum over it and it didn't pick up a shred. I've now had my 'new' vacuum for over 10 years and it does as nice of a job now as it did then and it was only $400 (which seemed like a lot at the time!)

And yes, Consumer Reports rated the Dyson very low, not that I think they are the end all be all of authority on vacuums, but it does weigh in my decision making process. GL!

Love my Dyson! Bought the first Dyson Upright 8 years ago the Animal. It did a excellent job but, was a little heavy. So when they came out with the light weight version last year I was thrilled. I sold my used Dyson on Ebay and got $315! So to upgrade it wasn't that much. I found the best deal on HSN. If you save it to your wishlist they will email you when it's going on sale. Plus they give you extra tools and a extra filter for less than the stores. Also, a payment plan with no interest.

I have the Drive (I have a collie-husky nix, enough said) and I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE it. It has NOT lost suction, works great on carpet, tile and hardwood. If mine blew up today I would get another O. tomorrow and not flinch at the price. Mine is 5+ years old.
Don't stress over the specific model--any O. you choose will be fine. Mine has the small attachments for the cars and I've never used it but it is AWESOME for pet hair. Target sometimes has a deal where you buy O. and get a $50 or $100 gift card. That's when I bought mine.

We have a dyson and have it for about 5 years now and it still works great and does wonders on the pet hair with 3 short haired cats and a lab. We do have the animal one. Bed Bath and Beyond has 25% off coupons sometime and at least when we bought ours you could use it on the vacuum, so that made it a good bit cheaper. So if you have one of their stores nearby check for the coupons.

I have not heard good things about Dysons on hardwood, but we broke down and bought one and it works so great on our carpets! I have really long hair and it has never clogged ours. We didnt get the animal, but some friends of mine have one b/c they have big dogs and the love it!

You won't regret it...we have the pet hair one (purple) and have had it for 6 years. The suction is great - you just have to remember to wash the filter every so often and check to make sure nothing gets stuck. Yes the attachments are a little tricky but once you figure them out they're easy! I love it and would buy one again.

I don't have the animal but I love the Dyson and have not been disappointed with it yet. My previous ones were Dirt Devil's and they did a good job but I got tired of taking 3 hours to take them apart to unclog them just about everytime I used it because when kids use the vacuum they don't pick up anything like candy wrappers which clog up the hoses along with the cat hair. I love the dyson, it doesn't clog easily and when you do get one it is easy to take apart to fix the clog. I have had mine a few years and have only had to unclog it once and it was so easy to get to and didn't need to get a screwdriver out to take it all apart.

My brother also has one with a huge house and they love theirs. They were buying a vacuum every year prior to the dyson because they would burn out from vacuuming a big house and getting clogged up all the time. They have had their dyson at least 4 years and still love it. I think they do have the animal as it is bigger than mine. I didn't need a big one because we only have a few rooms with carpet and half the house is wood floors but also use it to clean the floors and ceiling fans.

LOVE IT! plus it is cheaper than Kirby or the other known to last brands.

Our Dyson is worth every cent, expensive yes, and worth it. I think it pulls dirt up from the basement, through the foundation! I'm amazed with the difference between Electrolux, Panasonic and Dyson. Dyson wins, hands down.

My mom has a Dyson and HATES it. She says it is heavy and not that easy to use.

I have an Oreck. Lightweight, great suction, super easy to use, 10 yr warranty, once a year tuneup.

I can't say enough positive things about my Oreck.

I have the Dyson Animal and I can't stress how much I HATE it. It frequently loses suction, the attatchments are worthless and it gives a poor performance on hardwood floors. Itstead of picking up all the dirt on a hardwood floor, it gets *some* dirt and then spits the rest all over the floor.

Yes it is! We have the All-Floor model and LOVE it!!! Our lab mix is constantly shedding, and it always gets up all of the hair. My mom swore that there was no way it could be worth the money, she used ours once and went out and bought a new Dyson the very next week! They are heavy, but they are easy to clean and suction like nothing else!

I love our Dyson. We vacuumed a rug that had just been vacuumed with another model, and we couldn't believe how much animal hair/debris it picked up. The Animal version isn't really worth it. It just means that it comes with an attachment (that you could purchase separately if you decided you needed it). My one frustration with it is that it's still difficult to vacuum the stairs (but maybe there's an attachment for that).
If there is a Bed, Bath and Beyond in your area you can use the 20% of coupon (we did).

I asked this same question over a year ago, and it really is worth it! I had gone thru a vacuum every couple of years (we have a beagle mix and two little girls), and was tired of it. My parents got one as a gift, and my mother never uses it, because my dad does all the vacuuming! Trust me - my dad would never clean anything when I was younger, unless it was the garage or his workbench. That information, along with all of the advice I got on Mamapedia, sold me, and I love my Dyson!

I watched for sales and got ours at Target, with a $100 gift card; I've also seen a gift card deal at Kohl's. Good luck and enjoy it!!

I have a Dyson and it is a love hate relationship. I have a golden retriever and the hair is everywhere. The Dyson works great on carpets but the suction is so strong that it can actually suck up my 8x10 area rug. After much frustration I called the 1800 number and they walked me through an adjustment so it won't do that anymore. Now I love it again. I don't have the animal version, but it still works very well. Check the home shopping network. Thats how I got mine and paid like $350 no S&H and spaced the payments out over a few months.

Sounds like you've made your decision, but I used my Mom's Dyson a few times when my vaccuum broke and before I got a new one. I was NOT impressed. The canister was clean and the filters were clean and the thing did not have good suction at all. I thought it was crazy how they advertise the great suction, but this thing was terrible. I hope yours works better.

We have a Dyson and LOVE it! We had several other bag-less models before and they never worked well after the first couple of uses, our dyson has been going great for 3 years. We have one of the less expensive all over models and it doesn't do real great on the shag rug in our daughters room, but we probably don't have the brush set high enough. It works great everywhere else.

Let me know how you like it please. I am in the market for a new vacum myself and also have multiple pets including 2 dogs 1 bird and 2 rabbits all who shed. I would really like your opinion.

I thought the same thing - I had a Hoover and then a Eureka - and was going through a vacuum every year or 2!! I moved into a house with LOTS of high pile (frisee) carpet - so I knew I needed a good vaccum!

I got the basic yellow Dyson - got a great deal - and I LOVE it!! It has great suction - yes it will actually lift your carpets right up!!

I have 2 small dogs - not a shedding breed - put still all animals shed some.

It works great on bare floors as well.

My only complaint is that to use the hose attachments is a little inconvenient - but once you get the hang of it - it is fine.

I have the pet hair Dyson and I LOVE IT!!! We got ours about 8 yrs ago and it is the best thing ever. My hubby actually won it as a door prize at the annual meeting for the company he was working for at the time.

During those 8 yrs that we have had our Dyson, we have had at least 1 dog. A St. Bernard for all of those 8 yrs and most recently a Westie for the last 5 yrs. So dogs + kids...our vacuum gets a workout! I haven't had any problems with it. Just requires a lot of emptying...but what do you expect with almost 200 lbs of dogs and 2 kids running around! =)

In my opinion, a Dyson is money well spent!!!

PS - I want to add that we have about every surface imaginable in our house...tile, berber carpet, shaggy carpet, hardwood, linoleum, microfiber, cotton, fabric, leather, etc, etc, etc =)

I have a Dyson, the basic yellow model. We got it at Costco a few years back and I think it was about $400. Overall, I love it. It is heavy, no denying it. And the attachements too me awhile to get use to and use without getting frustrated. I was thrilled with it till I tried a friend's Oreck. They had a new model with the ball on the front that makes it turn so easy - and its almost like self-propelling - it literally takes off. Anyway, that vacuum was really really nice. I'd change to that one if we could, but we certainly aren't going to go buy a new one. If your really thinking of buying a Dyson, you shoulld go check out the Orecks. I was a skeptic but super impressed on this new model.

I love my Dyson Animal. I don't think you'll be disappointed.

My advice - determine your needs & buy one in your budget that best meets this. For me I want a bagless, upright that it light enough to carry up & down stairs and has a long enough cord and attachments. If you don't like it, you won't use it so it will last long... get it?

I have been through my share of vaccuums. Took consumer reports advice several years ago and purchased their top pick at the time that was a Hoover Wind Tunnel self propelled at the time - it wasn't cheap, heavy and it didn't last all that long. I considered the Dyson but couldn't stomach the price either. Set a budget of around $130 and found a bagless Bissell (purple one - not the lift off which was heavier) that I bought after researching price - not sure if it was Kohl's or Target. Had it several years, only had to replace the belt $3 and I love that so much of it comes apart so I can wash all the dirt out. I've found Quaker granola bar wrappers among other things sucked up in it ,.. not on my watch - so I'd say the suction is not an issue.

If you are paying a lot, make sure you get the extended warranty too.

The Dyson made for pets is awesome and made just for that!! And it is worth the money and will pay for itself....Good luck in your decision!

YES, I have a dog that sheds and 2 little kids. It works wonderfully. Sucks way harder than my old Kenmore, which was a consumer report best buy. I have the shag type carpet, regular carpet, tile floors and wood. Works on all of them. You won't regret it.

I have 5 dogs and a pet service, for both I have a Sebo yes costly however fantastic!!

It will not disappoint! We splurged on one b/c of my allergies, having a cat and two little ones in the house. Love. It. It works great on all floor types too! Also, our carpet is old (I'm working on hubby to replace it) and I swear the Dyson is helping me out. It pulls up some serious dirt! New carpet here I come!

we love our purple dyson...we clean the car out with it, vacuum stairs, floors, etc. you can get a better deal on them than you think. Target runs sales and you can use a 20% coupon at Bed Bath and beyond. we asked for BBB gift cards for different occasions over the course of a year and then used them plus the coupon to buy the vacuum.

Yes! Definitely worth the money. I have two children as well as two English Mastiffs. I bought the Animal version of the Dyson three years ago and still think it is the greatest vacuum I have ever owned! I have not tried the All-Floors model, but I do use my Dyson on my shag like carpet as well as my wood and tile floors. Just turn the brushes off when your not on the carpet. The pole attachment is so easy to use I usually take a sec to vacuum the dog hair and crumbs in the creases of my couch. The vacuum is super easy to empty as well and every so often I do a thorough cleaning of the whole canister including the filters. It can all be washed with water no problem. I Love Love Love my dyson!

We have 3 dogs in the house the black lab sheds less than the other dog we have short berber carpets, a short shag, wood and tile floors. We have had the Dyson Pets for 3 years and love it. It works as advertised we have replaced the belt due to getting to close to a blanket on the edge of the bed and it sucking it up (shouldn't get in a hurry lol) The only other thing I would suggest is to by a extra filter for it so when you wash the filter if you need to use it you can. Ours takes a couple of days to dry. But other than that it works great on the wood floors and carpets. I used to have a rainbow before the Dyson I had that for 16 years.

Yes, it's worth it. Use a coupon. Get the purple animal, it's awesome for pet hair.
