I take the best multivitamins around, they are the ones Joy G mentioned..Oligo. Let one of us know if you want more information.

They don't claim to be a "miracle vitamin" but they ARE a high quality, effective vitamin that is more absorbable than most. My family uses them and have noticed a difference. Additionally, they are backed with a money back guarantee!

Greetings. I had the same problem with my nails. I actually used to bite my nails because they were so brittle, but I now take the Essentials from Usana Health Sciences. The suppliments are made to to the Food grade level. There are no "added fillers" and they are the top suppliments in the USA. There is nothing in them that will harm your body. I take them everyday after breakfast and it has made a difference in my hair and nails. My Nails are alot stronger and my hair is shiney. My brother is a veternarian in San Antonio texas and he even gives them to his patients and it makes their hair grow shiner, healthier. You can go onto the website and order them. Good Luck and God Bless

Opti-Natal is the one my midwives had me take when I was pregnant. It has more natural ingredients, and the iron is supposedly more easily absorbed. But even with that, I still often had to take a natural iron supplement. You can try liquid clorophyl. It comes in capsule form and is really easy to take, and will help to increase your iron levels. Obviously you might want to run it by your doctor first, but it is a natural iron supplement, so I would imagine he'd be OK with it.

I use great vitamins that you can order online. They are reinfrced with the Oligo factor, which helps them to be more absorbable, so you will have to take less, and have better results than ones you can get in your grocery stores. I'd love to get you the website for those, if you'd like, just let me know

most multivitims sold over the counter pretty much have the same ingrediants, so mostly you're just paying for a name. but remeber your body only absorbs about 40% of vitimins when they come in pill form. the best way to get vitamins is through food, oh and if you take calcium supplements iron supplements hinder the body's ability to absorb calcium so you would have to take them at different times of the day (I learned all this when I was vegatarian and had low iron)

Check with your local pharmacies to see if any offer free prenatal vitamins.

Locally, one of our pharmacies has a contract with a pharmaceutical manufacturer to offer free prenatal vitamins in hopes of encouraging people to spend more in the grocery store, on personal care items, etc.

My OB/GYN said it was OK for me to stay on prenatals despite not being pregnant, so I figure FDA approved and free is a good deal.

Most products are registered with the FDA but not approved (those you purchase over the counter). Most you purchase online are not, and the quality of ingredients is not regulated.

I'd stick with the big name brands.

One important note, ask your pharmacist to explain how much you need of certain vitamins that you're not receiving through your diet. Calcium, for example, comes in pills as large as 1000mg, but your body can only process 500mg at a time. You basically urinate out 1/2 of the pill needlessly.

Watch your labels! Most Vitamin supplements are loaded with fillers and an ingredient called magnesium sterate. I have been a health professional for years and in my experience most vitamins people are taking are winding up in the bed pans or make a very interesting x-ray. These supplements are not getting absorbed so you are literally flushing your money down the toilet. I found a great supplement line through one of the physicians and I am convinced it's the best out there. The line is Isotonix and it is 90-95% absorbable instead of the maximum 30% of typically high grade vitamins. Isotonic means same pressure which simply means that when you mix this powder with the right amount of water it is immediately bioavailable. You can actually feel the benefits of a multi-vitamin. You can research and purchase them here: http://www.visionary-wellness.com. Hope this helps!

Hi B.,

I'm going to add to what Sarah S and Victoria C say. Both have good info. Whole food is usually best but with pesticides, preservatives, antibiotics, hormones, etc in food it's not as easy as it used to be....Vitamins sold in stores are not good. Most are even dangerous. They create free radical activity which causes disease and even if you do get any nutrition it is not a lot, probably less than the 40% mentioned. I take a vitamin guaranteed to absorb. It is made to absorb like food by a patented process that is quite innovative. If you're not happy with it for any reason, the company refunds all your money up to 90 days after purchase. It's also the cheapest on the market, less than $20 for a month's supply, when comparing it to other pharmaceutical grade supplements.

Let me know if you're interested and I can send you some information on it. I'd love to help!

Billie,
I would avoid all vitamins sold in stores, health food stores also.
I use Shaklee. They have more published peer-reviewed research than all other supplement companies combined. They are also completely absorbed.
B-complex will help the hair and nails. You may also need vitamin D.
If you are interested in Shaklee, let me know.

Check out http://www.YummyLiquidVitamins.com My hubby and I take these and I used to wear acrylic nails but don't anymore since mine are growing out so strong now! Also has helped us sleep better and less stress. I still take an iron suppliment since this is liquid and both men and women can take it, men aren't supposed to have iron so you would still have to take that separate. But you don't need to mix it and its liquid so it's absorbed into your body faster than pills. Watch the free 3 minute video. Its 60 day money back guarantee (minus s/h) but you will LOVE it! And the price is great!!! Good luck!!!

Even when I was prego, I could not handle the prenatal vitamens because they were so big and upset my stomach. So with my dr approval, I took kids Flinstones vitamens. They have all the same stuff. If you have low iron, you could just add an iron suppplement. Now I take adult gummy ones (I get them from Costco). They are inexpensive and taste good. I only don't still take the Flinstones because of taste. Good luck to you in whatever you decide.
