Looking for a Good Crib Soother for My Toddler

My toddler has had a few different crib soothers in his life, but he loves his Leap Frog star the best. The problem we are having right now is that whenever he wakes up at night, he turns on the star by himself and the batteries keep getting eaten up. My husband is an electronics technician and made one of the stars into a plug-in type, but the motor eventually died. Do you have a crib soother that works really well for your child? I need some ideas before my son goes on a sleeping strike!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thank you for the input, Ladies! My son actually has two stuffed rats he holds to fall asleep, too. He sleeps in a toddler bed in his own room. Since the baby was born a few months ago, he has reverted back to some "baby" behavior like insisting on having his star on whenever he wakes up and using a pacifier at times. I'm going to check out some of those other soothers listed and also see if I can slowly ween him off it in the long run.

we use the fisher price rainforest music/light box. It seems to not eat thru the batteries and my daughter uses it constantly. I hear it running in the middle of the night quite often. It has adjustable volume, which was my favorite thing about it. And my daughter loves watching the frog and monkey jump around while listening to soothing tunes.

Don't do it! Your boy is now dependant on a prop to go to sleep. He needs to learn to go to sleep without a prop at bedtime, so he can go to sleep without a prop in the middle of the night.
Explain to him that his "toy" is broken and he will have to sleep without it. You may have some tough nights but it will be worth it in the end. If he doesn't learn to go back to sleep on his own soon, you are going to have a little boy in your room in the middle of the night for every night for a long time.

I recommend buying another one. My grandchildren had a Fischer price thing that made music, had moving fish, and played soothing songs. I don't think we changed the batteries more than once in 2-3 years. I wonder if your stars one was faulty. Does the star turn its self off after a certain period? If not perhaps your husband could rig that up. Also some batteries last longer than others. They cost a bit more but last a lot longer. We used Duracell Coppertop (alkaline) ones.

To save money you could use rechargeable batteries. You can buy the charger with the batteries. I think it cost less than $15 and my daughter uses these batteries for several things.

I'm for anything that helps a toddler go back to sleep. He will out grow it. I've gone thru times in my life that I turned on the radio to help me get back to sleep. Songs and a mesmerizing display are soothing in part because the moving objects sort of "hypnotize" the watcher, making them sleepy. Many people have a fish tank that they use to help themselves unwind and get sleepy. We all use aides to sleep from time to time. This is the time for this toddler.

My daughter came to live with me when she was 7. A friend's daughter gave her a gloworm. She took it back to Waverly and slept with it during the get acquainted time. She continued sleeping with it for a couple of months. I think it gave her security. First, it represented her new home and then was a constant object for her when she did move to my house.

For those who haven't seen a glowworm, they have a light that turns on when you squeeze it.

Hi, I have a Fisher Price starry night mobil/lamp. It has a remote, so that you can turn it off and on without going into the room. My son never seen me when I turned it on. It has the attachments for the side of the crib or it can be adjusted to set on a table. there are several types of music and even night time animal sounds (crickets, frogs, so on) you can set the lights to totate/motionless shine stares on the selling, dime light on the crib/table, or all three. My really likes it (still does) he has out grown and uses a night light and his CD's.
I am getting ready to list it on craigslist. If you are interested please let me know.

How about letting your kid figure out how to fall asleep on his own? My kids just have stuffed animals that they always sleep with. Having something electronic with lights and noise isn't soothing: It's entertaining. Your child needs sleep.

Perhaps you can transition him to a stuffed animal or other item? We just recently stopped leaving a night light (actually a very dim lamp) on for our two-year old daughter, expecting trauma--she didn't even fuss! We gave her a "baby" and made a big deal about her covering it up and putting it to sleep and being quiet about it. Now when we go in to get her up in the morning, she says, "Shhh, baby's sleeping." I think it helped her not notice the missing light.

Good luck! Maybe something without batteries would be a good idea too!

my son loves the fisher price rainforest one. We use it every night, and it turns itself off after a certain time (depends on the mode you have it set 6-18 minutes). I haven't changed the batteries for probably at least 6 months!

I am confused? Is the older child still in a crib? and can not sleep without a soother? I would try to transition him in to a big boy bed and give him some kind of stuffed toy or blanket for a comfort. He needs to learn to sleep on his own without electronic aids.

My son has a glow worm. I know someone else had mentioned it but just wanted to tell you that my son loves it. He can push on its belly to turn on some music and light up the worm's face and as it finishes the song, the light slowly dims. When he uses it to fall asleep it takes him just a few pushes before he drifts off to sleep. He used to use it more before but now he can go to sleep on his own. I think he uses the glow worm more when he wakes up in the morning of after his naps. It's his bed buddy and definitely helps to keep him in a good mood if I don't come get him the second after he wakes up.
