I just found lice in my sons hair. That was an easy fix I just shaved his hair. The problem is his sister have thick thick hair. What do I do to get rid of it in their hair. I have not had to deal with this since I was in school (years and years ago). My son hasn't been anywhere so I don't know where it came from. Any help would be appreciated.

What can I do next?

Hi.
My daughter is only 20 months so I have no experience with it...accept that from which I was a child. I remember super thick hair, combs, chemicals and tons of tears. I hope there is something new for you. I found this site. www.headlice.org

I hope this helps.

OH, I completely hate this problem. My daughter had it last summer and it was so hard to get rid of all the way. We bought something called Lice Freee (I think that's what it's called) and it came with a very fine toothed comb. It was very effective at removing the eggs.

OK the best and safest way to get rid of lice is tea tree oil. Get some good tea tree oil at the store as well as some tea tree oil shampoo. You mix the tea tree oil with a little water. about 1 tsp oil to 1/2 cup water and saturate your child already damp hair then wrap it in cellophane for 30 minutes. Wash the hair with the tea tree oil shampoo and then use a nit comb to get the eggs. Be sure to wash all bedding and such with hot water. special toys that cant be washed in the machine or dryer can be put in a plastic bag for 60 days. This is the best and safest way to do this. All the over the counter treatments are full of harmful chemicals. Most have permetherin in them which has actually been used in a flea treatment for cats until it was recalled for killing the cats. I promise this will work and if you continue to use the tea tree oil shampoo they wont ever come back. They cant stand the stuff. I can link you to some research reports that prove this works.

I have to pray that sherry did not mean kerosene. I dont know what the word she said is. But please dont put kerosene on your child. Chemicals are dangerous.

here is a link I found talking about the effects of the pesticides and mentions the tea tree oil treatment as well as another one that is supposed to work too.

Omg...my girls got it too about 2 yrs ago.they have very thick hair...mayonaise works well and just work it through the hair and scalp and let it set cover with plastic wrap and let it sit 15-20 minutes then use a lice comb and make sure you get EVERY NIT AND EGG ETC.This will take some time but it works..I would see if you could get a friend to help you..and make sure all bedding stuffed animals coats brushes etc. put it all in plastic bags and put in garage or someplace out of the way for at least 48 hr. and wash hot as possible... after the mayo treatment i would use a treatment just to be sure..they have a homeopathic treatment as well. I just didn't like using chemicals on my kids..Does your son or girls go to school?? Thats where my girls got it.and then gave it to each other.Don't feel bad it doesn't mean your dirty or anything it is just something kids pick up...You probally wqant to check the adults as well.. that stuff is vicious.. hope it helps

Yuck!! It happens though, my daughter has THICK CURLY hair down to her booty. All the over the counter stuff did was a temporary fix. I had her DR. call in a prescription to the pharmacy called OVIDE it stinks but works great. Kinda spendy without insurance. Only $20 with it. Make sure you clean all the bedding and carpeting throughoughly, stuffed animals in an airtight bag for 2 weeks. Trash and replace all combs/brushes. Follow through or it wil come back... I swear by this medication, oh also get ALL the nits (eggs) out. Try using clips in her hair, sectioning it out then going over it in small areas at a time to insure you don't go over the same spot 9 times while missing 9 spots.. I hope this works for ya. It did wonders for our family.

I agreee greatly about the tea tree oil. I would not use anything else on my kids. There is a company that carries a wonderful product that I know a few people hae used it with great success with multiple children.

Good Morning C.~
Being a former hairdresser, to save you the most money. The best option for Lice in thick hair is 2 different option. If you have a Sally's Beauty Supply in your area you can get Tea Tree shampoo works wonders get the hair wet, then apply the shampoo let set for about 2 minutes then rinse. Lice bugs dont like the smell so they run from it. The option which works really good too. Smother her hair with Mayo, then cap it for about 10 minutes, rinse out well, then shampoo her hair. The nice thing about the mayo is when you go to comb her out, and get all the nits, the oil from the mayo is still there and they come out really easy.
Good Luck

We had this 2 1/2 years ago with all 3 of my kids (2 girls 1 boy) We wound up shaving my son's head also ut my poor girls (and myself and my mother) all contracted the nasty little buggers. We got them from my niece who had come to visit for the summer and niether she nor my sister thought to tell me that she had had it a few weeks before- and apparently hadn't managed to get rid of all of it and it came back. So I had to comb for her eggs too. Talk about time consuming. We used RID shampoo- and I don't know if we just missed an egg or two or if it didn't work that well but it came back twice that summer (though not as bad because we were on constant watch at this point). One thing I wanted to add to what everyone else said is BE SURE to wash all bedding thoroughly and if your girls have anything extra fluffy (like those furry pillows that are popular now) you may have to toss it. At least we did- but maybe someone has a way to treat things that can't be washed in the machine.

Good luck!

I'm trying really hard to remember the treatments we would tell parents when I worked in nursery school. There has been a lot of discusion about store bought lice treatments being toxic for kids because they require repeated use. I'm not sure what the questionable ingredient is, but you should check out a homeopathic treatment.
We used to recommend coating the kids hair in oil, the lice & nits would get stuck to the oil. wrap the hair in a plastic bag overnight & in the morning comb it all out with a lice comb. Everything needs to be washed in very hot water. Sheets, towels, washcloths, stuffed animals etc. And this should be done for a couple of days.
Not sure if this is helpful.

Buy RID at any convenient store, since she has thick hair; to make it easier; trim some hair off, put RID on(according to directions), for combing the "nits" out, start in small sections(this could take some time),you might have to repeat the process in a week or two. Make sure to wash and dry everything(hats, coats, clothes, gloves, ect)!! Vacuum your furniture and to be safer buy a spray at the store for lice.I hope this helps you, my kids had lice from school a few years ago. Don't forget to boil your combs/brushes(or just buy new ones, and wash any hair accessories.

Get a licemeister comb. They have really long teeth that are very close together. I have thick hair and my daughter has very thick hair and I dealt with this long ago when she was only 3 and I was working home healthcare and the client homes I was going to were not very clean.

First, use the cheapest lice treatment you can find and leave it on for just under twice the recommended time ( I have done this numerous times and find this is the best due to the fact that the lice nowadays are more resistant to the chemicals ..... if you are uneasy about leaving it on that long, then just leave it the recommended time)... then comb through, using the lice meister comb. (just thinking about this makes my head itch lol).....
Take extra virgin olive oil.... heat it up in the microwave to where it is just warm.. not super hot but just warm.... take and comb it through their hair.. making sure that you pay close attention to the scalp as that is where they tend to lay the majority of their eggs. After applying a generous amount of the olive oil to their scalp and hair.. then wrap their hair in a warm towel (get slightly wet and microwave for 20 to 30 seconds...) and let them sit for 10 to 15 minutes. Before rinsing... use the lice meister comb to help remove all the nits and adult lice from the hair that were dislodged due to the olive oil treatment.
You will have to do this pretty much every day for a week or so, until you see no more nits or lice.
Good luck.. its no fun, but there are tricks like this that do work with determination.....

I have been through the trials of hell with Lice when my daughters Elementary School had an outbreak. Heres some tips. Go to the store and buy a typical over the counter lice remover, a METAL nit brush and Suave Balsam and Protein conditioner. Follow the directions on the lice treatment box. Afer her hair is rinsed and not dripping wet, put the conditioner on, alot of it, let it sit a minute, and start combing her hair with the metal brush. Keep a bowl of water close by, start at the root, comb, rinse the brush, repeat. I tried everything and this got rid of the nits, the lice, EVERYTHING. I've also used tee tree oil after I was sure I got it all, kind of as a repelent. Also, wash everything that isn't nailed down in hot water and Tide. Good Luck!!!

You can find a shampoo in medicine at the drug store. Fred Meyers has a couple of different brands. Just follow the directions.

You do need to notify the school and keep her out of school until all of the nits (eggs) are gone. The school will have directions for you.

Head lice are so inconvenient and apparently quite prolific. Good luck!

I don't know but I think shaving the head is not enough to get rid of the lice. You could ask the pharmacist and/or school nurse. The school deals with this all of the time.

Definately do NOT use Kerosine. It's flammable both as a liquid and as a gas as it evaporites. It is definatley toxic and not intended for contact with the skin. Before electricity it was put in lamps and burned for light.

I heard from 2 different sources that you can soak their hair in Olive oil and it will suffocate the lice. I heard this from my BF who has 4 girls and from a mother at my sons Preschool who has 3 daughters. But you still need to get the Spray stuff for the carpets, carseats etc.

Hi C.,
There is a great website called headlice.org that has god information.

Don't feel about getting it- but be sure to contact the school, that is almost always where it comes form and an outbreak can be a real pain. it happens to almost every family at one time or another.

In my opinion- nothing beats diligent combing, and cleaning everything!! Wash all bedding in HOT!! water, all hats combs clothes- think about where your family leans thier heads- the couch- everything, it is a ton of work, but if you are diligent they won't come back. if it can't be cleaned like stuffed animals thye should be put in plastic bags for at least 2 weeks.

I know some families that have struggled with it for months because they did not go through the whole clening process.

Sorry if it sounds discouraging- but it is not hopeless.

good luck,

M.

There was a great "Arthur" show about head lice, maybe you cna find it at your local library.

Hi, They sell a shampoo and special comb at most drugstores. The shampoo kills the lice and the eggs and the you just have to comb them out. He could of gotten it from a playmate or trying on a hat at the store. The "queen" can also jump from one head to another. Make sure you wash all of the brushes, linens, hats, etc. So they don't transfer to other family members or re - infect!

Lice sucks. My daughter had cronic problems. We had to get prescription medicine for her. But the over the counter stuff works if you follow the directions completely. You have to bag all the stuffed animals clean all the bedding vaccuum like mad. It's a pain and then some. Olive oil is good as well. PUt it in her hair over night with a shower cap. Then the next morning pull out any knits and live lice. Wash her hair with dish soap to get the oil out. There are good websites as well. Just google lice treatmeants. Good luck. I feel your pain.

Please don't cut any more hair! Ever. I can help. When the kids get head lice get Tea Tree Oil. I use this every time and I have very thick very long(to my waist)hair myself. Put oil in their hair for first roung soak good. The oil kills eggs too. Lice breath through skin and the oil cuts off the air. After you rinse the hair out leave it overnight then wash it the next day. There is also something in the tea tree oil that the lice can't live with. To prevent future bugs put a little Tea Tree Oil in each bottle of shampoo and shake well to mix wash as normal. This has worked for as long as I can remember for my mom and myself. I have told many other moms that are friends and they have loved it as well. Oh before I forget you only have to do this once or twice depending on how bad they are. Hope to save more hair, B.

Hello. My name is M.. There are specific shampoos at beauty supply stores that get rid of lice. I forget what the name of it is but you just need to go there and ask them about a good shampoo. I work at willoubys which is a beauty supply so if I was at work I could look it up and tell ya, but I just straight forgot the name of it. Also I know it sounds bad but mayonaise also works. when I went to cosmetology school one of the students kid there had lice and our instructor told her to use mayo. It basically clogs the lice and makes it so they cant breath and they die off. Leave it on for 15 minutes and wash it out.

When I was 12 my sister and i had the same problem. The only thing that got rid of it was this: First you have to take EVERYTHING in your house (blankets, clothes, towels, etc, even clean stuff) and wash it. I think there might even be a special detergent. They also have something for couches and stuffed animals. I remember my mom putting them in a trash bag with whatever they have for them. Then you have to wash her hair in that horrible shampoo. Get some hair clips and comb her hai in tiny sections with that special comb they give you. As you do it you are going tohave to pull some out1 by 1. You are also going to need to do your hair and anyone else in the house. Call every friend/family they have been in contact with and have them do the same.
It sounds extreme but believe me.. we battled thisfor a month and thats what finally got rid of it.. good luck!!
