Tea tree oil is a good, safe way to get rid of lice. I would never use those horrible old chemicals on my child's scalp for getting rid of lice. We used to live in England, and those things were not sold there because they are so bad for you. Everyone there uses tea tree oil. Much better!

This is the recipe my friend gave me for Head Lice -

How to get rid of Head Lice:

Mix together and leave on hair for 45 min. to and hour.
10 drops of each oil -

2oz sweet almond oil

rosemary
eucalyptus
geranium
lavendar

Rinse and can condition if want to and then put tea tree oil in shampoo (enough to smell it - it doesn't take much)

Refer her to a web site I referred my parents to in my child care facility.

headlice.org

It gives good advice about treating head lice the right way, without chemicals and pesticides. Tea tree oil can be bought at lots of drug stores or places like that and you just a drop or two to the entire bottle of shampoo. It really stinks so you really don't want to add more.

Head lice like clean hair. They can stick their babies (the nits) to the hair if it's clean and not oily. Head lice can only get from one person to another by direct contact. Tell your friend to teach her child to not put on things worn by other children, like hats, wigs, etc...like dress up clothes at school.

Our local Health Department states that head lice is at epidemic levels. It is everywhere and no one is immune to getting them. It is NOT a big deal.

There are LOTS of old wives tales out there about how to clean and get rid of them but the fact is just vacuuming the area get the bugs up. The web site covers all that. She can get all the info she needs there.

We had a major infestation last year - twice. I'm fairly certain that she was getting it from a classmate she sat next to. We did absolutely everything (all out war like a pp said). She needs to wash and dry on the hottest temp possible everything in the house she can. Wipe down the hard surfaces with disinfectant, and what can't be washed should be put (we double-bagged) into black trash bags and stored away from the family for at least two weeks. Buy a metal lice comb ( the plastic is useless) and comb her out every day for at least 10 days. I know different people have different feelings about the shampoo but we used it as directed (making sure to do a 2nd treatment around 10 days, I believe). Then, I blew her hair dry every night as hot as she could stand it and then used a flat iron on my stylists's suggestion. The lice can't withstand all that heat even if they survive the shampoo. You have to get as close to the scalp as possible, though. What finally seemed to really do the trick, though, and was fairly easy to find was coconut oil. I put it in her hair and left it on for I think an hour. It smothered everything and then when I brushed her out it made it much easier. Oh, and I made her wear her hair in a pony tail the rest of the year and that seemed to help, too. Send your friend my deepest sympathy. It is horrifying to go through!!

PLEASE TELL YOUR FRIEND THAT THERES NOTHING TO BE ASHAMED OF. IT HAPPENS ALL THE TIME.

I agree with the tea tree oil which for some reason naturally repels the nasty lice too so buy a shampoo which contains the oil.

When my family got lice a few years back I first shaved my son's head but since it's a girl I would not do that! We used tea tree oil. We mixed it with cooking oil to make it go farther. And just sacherated our heads with it cause he entire family ended up with it. Then get the combs and comb them out. The house will need to be treated. And stuffed animals that can not be washed or frozen in the freezer need to be put in something that will seal. For probably at lease 48 hours that will suffocate them. Wash all bedding in hot water. They have some spray that the beds and the furnicher can be sprayed with if they can't do a bomb to the house.

It's not easy to deal with and it's embarrassing I know even though pretty much everyone has or will have it at one time or another.

Good luck to your friend and God bless!!

A while ago a friend of mine's household had a very, very bad case of lice. It lasted for weeks during which time they tried every possible treatment out there. In the end, they did the mayonnaise/comb (cheap but time consuming) treatment several times a day, quarantined their couch, vacuumed all carpet multiple times a day, bagged extra clothes/fabric and dried the rest. Finally, after much dedication, the infestation was over.

That was, as I said, a very bad case and I don't think a couple of lice or nits would warrant an all out war like they needed. But, here is a good link that is useful regardless of the severity.

This question has been asked many times, so for more thoughts on it, try the search and see what comes up. Tea tree oil certainly worked for us. I added some directly to the scalp and a few drops to shampoo. The key really is to go through the hair, almost strand by strand to get rid of the nits before they hatch. If even 1 is missed, it can start it all over again. Vacuum the floor, furniture, car etc. Wash bedding, clothing, coats etc. I wouldn't go crazy cleaning the rest of the house though, washing walls and floors really won't do any good, as the lice can't live off humans for very long.

I have heard (have not tried this because I haven't had to deal with this yet!)
that rinsing the entire scalp with a bottle of Listerine, leaving it on for 10 minutes before rinsing kills them. When I was a child, I got them (ugh), and my mother used a "Rit" shampoo kit on me. I still see it being sold, so it must work 20 years later. Good luck!

WOW So glad I read these responses! My granddaughter had them not to long ago and I wish we had known about the mayo treatment! I did notice comments about the combs. The plastic combs that come in the kits at the pharmacy are worthless. They do make metal combs that work much better. We had to ask the pharmacist for them. I don't know why they don't put them on the shelves. After we used them, we cleaned them in bleach and have them ready for next time (ugh, the thought!).

My daughter used to work in a daycare. They were always having problems there. She checks my granddaughters hair every night before bed time so we really aren't sure how they got so bad in her hair this last time. But it has made us more diligent in regular checking. Unfortunately, if the child is in school or daycare, they will probably get lice!

Good luck, and thanks to all the other's responses. I now know what to try next time.

I worked in a homeless shelter, where we occasionally had lice breakouts. We would use mayo and Dawn. Completely smother the hair and scalp with real mayo and cover with a shower cap or plastic wrap (seal around hairline with vaseline). Let sit for at least 1 hour, then wash out with Dawn liquid soap. Go through hair with nit comb. Make sure to thoroughly clean all bedding (the whole house, not just infected person's!) and clothes and stuffed animals. Pillows and stuffed animals can be put in the dryer on high heat. Check for more nits daily for 10 days, and then retreat with mayo.

There is a comb called the "Lice Meister" that you can buy online or at cvs. There is a website for the comb & it has a store locator to help you find a location near you that sells the comb. There is also a natural kid friendly shampoo that you can buy. The website is www.fairytaleshaircare.com is all natural, organic hair care for children. Those kits you buy at walmart have very strong pesticides in them that are harming our children! Tge fairy tales shampoo has rosemary in it so it smells very good. The rosemary repels the lice. Keep your child away from the kid with lice! Call the school nurse & ask them to check the class. I have been fairytales since 2005 & it WORKS!
