I was prescribed Lexapro about 8 months ago - and this past weekend I found out I was pregnant so I immediately stopped taking it. Now I am experience lightheadedness, the feeling as though I'm spinning but I'm standing still, headaches, and nauseousness. I never had morning sickness with my first. Now I'm starting to read that Lexapro may cause these type of symtoms as part of withdrawal. Has anyone heard or that or experienced it themselves. I barely got thru work today and wondering how long this is going to last or is there anything I can do to prevent it? HELP !!!!

What can I do next?

Hello S.,

I am also on Lexapro, I had taken my self off of it for a couple weeks and experienced the same symptoms you have. My doctor said it would not be from the lexapro but for some reason I am starting to doubt that.

Hey S.,
Congrats on your pregnancy.
I have experienced the light headedness, nervousness many times from the withdrawal of Lexapro. I am now on Zoloft and I didnt have my meds for 2 days and I thought I was losing my mind. I was shaking and all of the same feelings you are experriencing. I was on Lexapro while I was pregnant and my obgyn told me it was safe for me to stay on it through out the pregnancy. Not sure why you have stopped the meds. You might want to talk to you obgyn about staying on it.

Keep me updated.

I was taking Lexapro about a year after having my daughter. I was on it for about 6 months and decided i just didn't want to take it anymore. You have to be really careful and wean off of it. I weaned off of it for about 4 weeks and still felt terrible after I stopped taking it. It took about a week or so to feel normal. Lexapro is safe during pregnancy so you don't have to just stop. Talk to your doctors about it, but i wouldn't recommend going cold turkey. I hope I was able to help.

I don't even know what Lexapro is. Pretty much any medicine prescribed by our legal drug dealers these days cause all those symptoms. Yes, I'm one of those who believes they are trying to keep us sick to feed us more drugs to keep them richer but, that's a whole other topic.

Remember EVERY single pregnancy is different, including your own. Just because you had no morning sickness in your first doesn't mean it can't happen now. You could probably have the first 10 kids with no morning sickness then the 11th gives it to you. It's totally hormonal. And as you know...hormonal changes are unpredictable.

I heard chewing gum and sucking on lollipops helps. Good luck. It won't last long. I had night sickness in the first trimester. I started to get sick to my stomach every night around dinner time. I didn't eat dinner for months because of it!!

The same thing happened to me. It will take maybe a week or two for the symptons to go away. Just have to let the pills work their way out of your system. But it sounds like everything is ok.

my one question is the dr tell you to stop taking it or did you stop on your own.. I would talk with your dr about it.. some drugs CANNOT be stopped cold turkey and you MUST be weaned off of them.. this is vital to you and your baby to not wreak havock on your system while you decrease your dose.. Just remeber as you suffer so does the baby and you dont want to throw your system off balance and take the chance of bottoming your blood pressure and passing out and or falling and doing more damage...Please call your dr ASAP.. he will tell you the proper way to wean off the drug with the proper dosages.. There are also some alternative drugs that can be used to safely treat you while pregnant.. speaking from experience depression can get worse during pregnancy and without any treatment you may be putting undu stress on your body. feel better..

My sister and mother were on Lexapro, they both tried to stop taking Lexapro and experienced the same withdrawal symptoms you just explained. My mother ended up weaning herself off of them but it took 2 months. My sister did it cold turkey and the side effects lasted 3 weeks. If I were you I would talk to your doctor who prescribed you the Lexapro and see if there is something over-the-counter or prescription that is safe for you and your baby to take to help you through your withdrawal symptoms. Congratulations on your pregnancy by the way : ) Good Luck.

Hi, i was also on lexapro but switch to a different medicine. Even know you are pregnant you should not just stop an anti-depressant! You must gradually go off of them. All of the symptoms you are describing are you body going into withdraw which could be very dangerous for the baby. Basically the baby is in withdraw too. I know plenty of people still on lexapro (and even during preganancy) ask your doctor some babies are lost due to withdraw. Please gradually reduce the med. Over a period of a few weeks. Let me know how u are doing asap.

I have been on Lexapro for over a year. It was prescribed to me for anxiety and recently I decided I was fine. I haven't had an attack in almost a year and have been off the lexapro for about 3 weeks. I was ok, a little moody but ok. I think it depends on the person but you should talk to your doctor and see what they say. If you can make it without taking the meds I promise you, you will feel better!!

Congrats on the pregnancy by the way

Yes...and I know how hard it was for me. Not so much w/ the physical symptoms but more the emotional. The physical symptoms wore off in a about two weeks, however w/ hormones, things might be different. Emotionally going off cold turkey was HORRIBLE. My best advice if you don't want to be on any meds while pregnant is to just hang in there. Sucks I know but it will go away. Wish I could be more help! Best of luck!

S.,
Wow! I am going through exactly the same thing. I was going along great on the lexapro then found out I am pregnant and stopped immediately. Maybe, weening off would have been better but that's what I did. So now I'm 8weeks pregnant and morning sickness is worse than with my first 2. But I think, and hope it gets better after the first trimester. Hang in there. Can you take some time off? probably not. Give yourself a rest once and a while that helps me! A.

I was prescribed Paxil, but b/c of the weight gain my dr switched me to Lexapro. I know that with the Paxil, you are not supposed to just stop taking it, you are supposed to wean yourself off of it. I would guarantee that is why you are feeling the way you are...

Hi S.,

I have had my experiences with many forms of drugs, including lexapro. However, you must talk with your doctor first, before stopping any medication. Stopping a medication abruptly can cause negative side effects. Normally people are usually weaned off the drug slowly. In order for your system to get used to not having it. This is especially important for those who have been taking the drug for a long period of time.
Hope this was of assistance.

Hi S.,
First I'd like to say Congratulations on your pregnancy! Second, you cannot just stop taking Lexapro, you need to talk to your doctor about gradually coming off this drug. I know you are pregnant and don't want to harm your baby but please talk to your doctor first.
