Has anyone been to Legoland in Schaumburg with your kids? Is it worth it? I have a coupon from Chicago Parent for $7 tickets after 4 pm. I don't think I'd ever pay the full price ($15/$19 per person), but is it worth the drive (45 minutes for us) and $7 each? What ages are best?

ADDENDUM:

THE COUPON IS ON CHICAGO PARENT WEBSITE: www.ChicagoParent.com. Or if you can't access it, send me a note and I will email you the link.

So What Happened?

Okay! So we went today, using the FABULOUS coupon provided by the poster below (THANK YOU!!) so we only paid $5 each. And we actually each had $5 worth of fun! I would caution anyone against paying full price, which is insane at $19/$15. I can't believe they charge that for what this place offers, which is like a glorified store with a few attractions. But, for $5, the kids each enjoyed two 4-D movies, a little ride on a dragon through a maze of Lego creations, a ride like the "octopus" at fair grounds where they go up in a little cart, a tour of a "factory" (tiny!) and a chance to make Lego cars to race.

HINTS: Bring your own food. There is a snack area that is crazy expensive. Bring socks to be able to use the climbing area (like McDonald playland for kids 2-6). Bring a camera. Use the coupon below, which expires Friday or the one on the ChicagoParent.com website for use after 4 pm.

That is my review! Thanks for all of the great tips this week!

I know I'm late to the party but...there is also a coupon in the Oaklee's Guide for a free child admission with a full price adult admission. (Oaklee's Guide also has other fun coupons. Go to www.oakleesguide.com ) I have never been to Legoland but the Grandboys (6 & 4) went with my daughter. It seemed expensive for what they have there.

Hi S.,

I would definitely not pay full price either. It's OK for about an hour or two. Here is a link for admission for $5 after 4:00 PM weekdays. This is the last week to use it though. You can just print out how ever many you need and then present them at the door and pay your $5/person then.

I would definitely not pay full-price either. We took our daughters (9 & 5) and they loved it, but it is not worth the full-price admission. The 3-D movie was not working the day we went(I think it was SpongeBob, which we are not in to) and all you do is walk thru and look at displays. Although the displays are beautiful, there are very few interactive activities. I have to agree with the other response about the open play area being a zoo!! The Lego shop at the end is not even that impressive. My kids did enjoy themselves, so if they like Legos and you can get reduced admission, it's okay, but just okay.

Kids are on summer vacation. It's a special time for them. Take her. It's new and refreshing to be somewhere different. If she doesn't care for it you never have to go again. If she loves it you can go once a year. I don't know where you live but the highways all hook up to route 53. Take 290 Rockford to 53 north. It swings into 53 just before Thorndale rd. Call the place and get directions from there or use a g.p.s. Have fun. Summer will be gone before you know it.

We took our son (5 yrs) there for a birthday party and I was pleasantly surprised! We ended up going back a second time w/ all 3 of our children (5,3,1). It's like going to a mini theme park. There is even a ride into a tunnel with lego dragons. There are lots of things to see and do - including a "make your own race car" area, and a play area like an indoor park (tunnels and climbing stuff). There is a movie but we did not see that. There is a Lego jungle with all kids of Lego objects. There is a Lego "factory" which is a little silly but our kids loved it. There is of course a store on the way out but we skidaddled through there and the kids hardly noticed because they were so tired from playing.

It's definitely a little expensive, but I think it was a lot of fun. Get your money's worth by going early so you can stay a few hours (we have a child who still takes naps so that timing was important to us). Get a coupon or get your ticket online for a small discount.

I think it was great for us because our 5 and 3 year old boys are obsessed with Legos. But there were also lots of girls having fun there too. They love to build stuff and learn and soak stuff like that up.

Definitely a destination place, fun for us once or twice a year probably from now on (we live 45 mins away).
Have fun!

Hi - The first time we went it had just opened - hardly anyone there and we didn't think much. The second time however it was a bit more crowded but not too much and we thought it was very good. So yeah I'd go again. The admission is high but at least they give discounts and the kids like it..

Hi S.,
Just like you, I would not pay the full price. I also had the $7 coupon and went a couple of months ago.
I have to tell you I was not impressed at all. They don't have as many attractions as I thought they would.
It's way overcrowded even on a weekday afternoon.
There is a play area upstairs with legos, slides and food court all in one big area. It's like a zoo there. It was crowded and then a birthday party crowd of about 30 7-8 year olds came out from the party room and it was even worst. I almost lost my daughter in the crowd and kids weren't really paying attention, she almost fell a couple of times because of the bigger kids running.

There was a cool 3D movie that was kind of fun and it was kind of neat to see all the things they have made out of legos, but overall I was not impressed. I will not go back.

On the other hand, I have friends that have two boys 3 and 2, and they absolutely love that place. They bought a season pass and go there at least once a week, so I guess it just depends.....
