Leaky Diapers at Night - Nashville,TN

My son, almost 2, has been waking up almost every morning with a soaked diaper and wet PJs, sheet, and blanket. I'm tired of changing and washing the sheets everyday. We don't seem to have the same problem during the day. We tried overnight diapers last night and still leaked. Could his diapers be too big? What else could be going on? What can we do? Any ideas would be great!

What can I do next?

K., i had the same problem with my son (2 1/2) starting when he was about a year old - i used to be able to find a product called "diaper doublers" that worked really well but i haven't been able to find them in weeks - they are an insert that looks like a large maxi pad without the adhesive strip - when i stopped finding them i simply bought the poise pads (for adult incontinence) and have been using those - they are pretty much the same thing except they do have the adhesive strip - i just insert them in his diaper before bedtime - i hope this helps :-)
one other note - you can buy disposable pads that lay flat and protect the bedding from accidents - they are backed with plastic which is kinda noisy but i put them on the mattress with a sheet on top - it keeps the pad from moving and from making noise as the child moves during the night - i even put them in layers - i.e. a pad, sheet, another pad, another sheet, etc. to make about 4 layers - that way, if my son did have an accident during the night i would only have to change the top layers because the pads would catch the moisture before it got to the bottom layers - thankfully, the incontinence pads have prevented accidents lately but when something has happened (like he became sick one night) only having to change the top layer of bedding was a real sanity (and sleep) saver!

K., have you tried 'no drinks beyond 2 hours before bedtime' each night? Also, with a heavy wetting baby boy, we found that Luvs were the only diapars that held through the night.

This is a sign he's ready to start potty training. My daughter flooded her diapers by holding it for 3 or 4 hours and then letting loose. The diaper lining couldn't take all the pee in fast enough and it flowed out instead. You might try some cloth diapers like the Sandy's large by motherease. Add a doubler and a good breathable cover and he'll definately stay dry at night. Or, keep trying different disposable brands and larger sizes until you find one that can do the job. Also, try cutting back on his fluids in the evening.

My son did the exact same thing, however, the overnight diapers worked for him. My friends child had the same problem with the overnight diapers not working. But, the overnight Pull-Ups, did. So, I'd buy a pack of the overnight pull-ups and see if that will work. They fit differently. If the overnight pull-ups don't work, I also had a friend that would use the overnights PLUS put one of her extra absorbent maxi pads inside of his diaper at night. Sounds silly, but it worked like a charm for her. =0) Good luck!

Hi K.,

Try inserting a regular feminine pad into a his diaper. I have used Kotex and Target brands. I use Pampers ultra cruisers for nighttime including a feminine pad and my 2.5 year old son doesn't leak for 12-13 hours.

Good luck!

Funny that this subject should come up cause I also have a 2 year old son who had the same problem this morning. What you can try to do is give him less to drink before bed. Like an hour before he goes to bed don't give him anything and you should see a change in him wetting everything.

I use target brand during the day and Pampers (a size larger) at night. Target brand can't handle the night time. Having one-size larger of Pampers fits the bill. A friend of mine uses Huggies and does the same thing and it has worked for her.

Hi K.,

You didn't mention what kind of overnight diaper you were using but I had that problem and read some posts on here that suggested Huggies Overnights. I tried them and love them! Have been using them ever since and have not had any leakage problems at all! Huggies overnights are the best!

Not sure if this will help you any but if you were using a different type of overnight diaper, I'd suggest that you give the Huggies overnights a try. They hold alot of pee!

Good luck!

Try these two things: First, just before bedtime or last diaper change, make him pee by either putting him on the potty and pouring warm water over his wee-wee, or standing him in the bathtub with warm water and pour it over his crotch area (just make sure it's warm and not hot!) That will ensure that he pees just prior to the last diaper. Then put on the biggest diaper or pull up that fits him, THEN put on another LARGER pull up. I like bargains and saving money wherever possible, but diapers are one place I will not skimp on and have found the cheap ones leak the worst! Good Luck!

We found out that my son was reaching into his diaper to "play" with himself and rearranging so that when he peed it went up and sout the diaper! We had to start putting him in Overnight Diapers + a Diaper Doubler + footed PJ's where he couldn't get his hands down his pants! Recently I have noticed that my younger son has started leaking out of his Huggies Overnights....They have changed the tabs, I wonder if that has any bearing on how they fit. Good Luck to ya.

My oldest son (4 yo now) had this same problem. We found a couple of things that worked. We changed style of diaper because the one we used was fitting him well around the waist anymore. He had changed shape and the diapers hadn't. So, we bought the new diapers, put everything together as we wanted then slipped a folded cloth diaper just inside the front of his diaper. It absorbed anything extra that might come out. We put him in a onesie or one piece pajamas and he slept well. He didn't get rashes or anything from the cloth diaper the way he would when the regular wet diaper sat against his stomach. Also, cut back on some of his nighttime liquids and he shouldn't pee quite as much at night.
Good luck, I know it is frustrating!

I saw a lot of suggestions on here for putting plastic pants over the top to save clothes and sheets. If you are up for doing that, I would recommend looking online for something called a Bummis Super Whisper Wrap. They are waterproof covers for cloth diapers. We use cloth diapers and love their absorbency, but I know this is not for everyone. This wrap might work for you to put over a disposable and it is a bit softer than those plastic pants they sell at regular stores like Wal-Mart. If you live in Louisville, there is a cloth diaper store called Mama's Hip that carries these wraps I believe. I have not made it in to the store, but know they have a website where you could find directions. The wraps run around $11, I think, which is more than the plastic pants from Wal-Mart, but in the end it would be softer and still save you some money!

We went thru this. We had to double diaper. It was expensive and aggervating, but it was either that or do sheets EVERY day. We put a regular sized diaper on first, then a size bigger over it. I hope this helps!

The brand could be the problem or it could be the size. Sometimes those night time diapers are not tight around the edges, maybe you could just use a regular diaper. Also, you may try taking him potty right before he goes to bed to get most out. Try taking drinks away after dinner. Also, he may have his "wee wee" pointed up toward the top and it is coming out the top part. Try shifting it pointing downward. Lastly, put plastic pants over the diaper if these do not work.

Hi K., I'm having this same problem with my daughter, who is also about to be 2. We've had this problem on and off since she was about 5 months, and usually what works for us it to put her in a slightly larger diaper at night with a onesie and fitted pajama pants. For some reason with her, if her diaper is at all too small, it leaks like crazy at night. Also, the onesie seems to help keep the diaper in place so it doesn't bunch or slip while she's sleeping. She's in a size 6 diaper at night now so that's working pretty well. Good luck, I know changing the clothes and sheets every morning is no fun!

My 16 month old son had the same problem. I have only used Pampers for the last 6 months and had no problems. They have ones called Ultra Care that are designed for overnight. You can't use other brands for boys. I have used ALL the other brands and although they are cheaper, they leak and really don't save you in the end. Pampers are more padded in the front for boys and Huggies are more padded in the middle for girls. He always leaks through Huggies. I buy mine at BJ"s wearhouse with a BJ's coupon and they are around $34 for a months supply. I also put him in footie pajameas and a sleep blanket on him at night, which helps with leaks so at least the sheets don't get wet... Good luck. I know this must be so frustrating...

I have recently had similar issues with my 2 year old. We have had to enforce a "no drinks" 2-3 hours before bed. In some cases - if he is VERY persistent, he still gets a small drink vs. a full cup. While this can be difficult it seems to to help and will begin preparing us for potty training in coming months(I hope).

Yup, bigger diapers, or even put two on him, but bigger diapers should do the trick.

does he go to sleep right after or with a bottle/sippy cup? Milk before bed really makes some people have to pee a lot in the middle of the night. My little one was the same way and I always felt so bad because he didn't wake me to tell me he was wet, so his little butt would get red. When I stopped giving him the fluids before bedtime, he began to make it through the night with less peeing. The last milk was a t dinner time or at least 3 hours before bedtime. It was water after that, and for some reason, water didn't soak him. good luck (the little plastic panties that they put over cloth diapers will keep his bed clothes and pj's from soaking.)

Try the next size up, actually, I use the Huggies overnights. The only time I had a problem with one leaking was when my little guy slept 12 straight and never woke up for a changing, so he was soaked when he had his morning pee and poo- thank goodness there was no poo blowout! Anytime I've noticed he starts soaking diapers I go the next size up- even if its for babies that weigh 10 pounds than he does. Hope this helps!

My son is the same age and has been doing the same thing. I read somewhere that if your child is a "leaker" you should put two diapers on them each night to cut down on the wetting of pjs and sheets. So...we put a regular diaper on the bottom and an overnight diaper on top of that. Sometimes he still springs a leak but for the most part this works great for us, and he can usually wear his pajamas again that night (I try to have them wear them twice if I can) and he gets his sheets changed the same day as everyone else! Hope this helps.

hey sometimes the next size diaper helps. maybe try luvs they hold pee in. my son started doing this at about the same age. we put a training pair of underwear and plastic pants on him before bed. basically they hold the diaper in place. he has yet to pee through his diaper. wish I would have done this sooner...would have saved me lots of laundry...

Hi K., More than likely the diapers he's wearing are to small. He might be ready for the next size. You can also try putting rubber pants over his diapers at night. You can find them anywhere. It might stop the leaks. It worked for us for our daughter and wasn't a burden to the pocket. I hope you find something that works. Im sure all the great ladies on here will give you lots of ideas. Good luck and God bless!

My son is 10 months old and I had the same problem a few months ago. Even tho I dressed him down he still would wake up with wet clothes. I decided to buy his diapers one size bigger and use those for when he went to bed. I haven't had a problem yet.
