Lazy Ovaries:

Doctor who I am getting my acupuncture from told me that I may have a lazy ovaries and not ovulating properly. I thought about Miranda from Sex and the City in one episode. Anyways, last month, I finally got a positive result from using the ovulating stick (probably thank you to the acupuncture??), but I didn't get pregnant this time around.

I am 36 (not getting young here), started trying last October, couldn't figure out when I am ovulating or my period is coming until recently.

Should I try couple more months and go to my gyno, or should I go there soon? I heard that there is a way of making you ovulate by pill or some other procedure? Is there any?

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

What can I do next?

I love alternative medicine, but an acupuncturist knows nothing about it if your ovaries are working!!!

My doctor said with women over 35, they start to do tests after 6 months of trying. If you really want to get pregnant, you should see an OB. They are the only ones who can know anything about your internal parts. There are ways to stimulate ovulation, but you would need the OB to take you through those choices.

My sis and her husband started trying for kids when she was 33. They thought they had plenty of time. After a year they were a little disappointed, but kept trying. They just thought if they had sex more often then it would happen. When she was 35, they went to a fertility specialist and did some preliminary testing. Nothing came back abnormal, so they tried for another year. Finally at 36, they really got to the root of her problem (her Fallopian Tubes). The specialist told her that the egg would never get down her tubes. He told her the only way to get pregnant would be through IVF. They waited a few more months and finally did it.

She is 37 and gave birth last week to TWINS! She got pregnant on her first round of IVF. She only wishes she wouldn't have waited so long to figure out she had a problem. She will be 38 soon and feels she is too old to have more children. They are very happy with the two they have, but she wishes they wouldn't have waited so long.

So, long story short...don't wait!!!!

Yes, there is a pill that causes your ovaries to put out eggs. It's one cause for multiples.

Whether or not you go to the ob/gyn is a personal choice. Go now and get pregnant with the help of fertility treatments. Or wait and see if your body will continue to ovulate with the acupuncture.

I'd wait another 3-4 months continuing with the acupuncturist. You've just gotten started with that treatment which sounds much more natural than the fertility treatments.

I say go to a Ob/Gyn. Yes, there is a pill to make you ovulate and it's Clomid. It is a frequent cause of multiples (twins, triplets). But you should talk to someone right away because you are over 35 and you've been trying for more than 6 months.

Yoga activates that whole area. My best friend couldn't get pregnant for a long time and I showed her some exercises. Within a couple of days she was not constipated anymore (that had been a problem for her), and she felt her body "cleaning itself up". 6 weeks later she found out she was pregnant. Yoga also made my period regular when I was a teenager. There are lots of studies out there about this, if you want to read up. I think it's better to try than all these hormonal treatments. You could still do those if this does not work after a few months.

My periods were always about 35 days apart. My husband and I got pregnant almost instantly the first time, the second time took a while - I was 38 then. If you have a "smart phone" you can track your period and ovulation based on prior months (if you have dates). But many, many people don't follow the "normal" schedule - which is really an average. I'd buy a case of ovulation testers - I think the big box stores sell them in larger volumes. Then relax. Stress is horrible for us all!
