My daughter would get frequent ear infections, but the fever always came at the beginning of the ear infection. But there were a few times that she didn't get a fever, or at least I did not notice it. If you are sure he has an ear infection I would start the meds, but if you are not sure, I would take him in to make sure he does have an infection first.

I think the sooner you can get him away from the sippy cups the better. If they go to rest time or sleep with them they can cause ear infections, just like the bottle.
Maybe you can let him have his cup only at the table. I think if you stop grabbing it for him, he will get thirsty and start taking care of it himself.
Good Luck-

My 5 year old trys to pull that where she won't reach a few inches to grab something and I look at her and say NO. She gets whiney and a attitude sometimes but I always say NO. If you want it there it is. I'm not your maid, I'm your mom.

As far as ear infection my daughter had ALOT of ear infections and the only times she actually ran a fever was when she was a preschooler with one. Weird I know. I always gave her antibiotics and that was the only thing that helped. She's not immune to antibiotics and she doesn't get ear infections anymore. So if it were my kid and the ear infection took a toll on their behavior or sleep I'd give them the antibiotic.

My son is almost 11 months and he wont hold the sippy cup or bottle on his own, maybe a bit too soon but he also does not self feed. We have to give him his cheerios, bread, fruit, etc. If its large enough to hold in his hand, he will hold it and eat from it, but anything thats a bite size piece he wont do it on his own. I would say if you think your son is feeling uncomfortable due to the ear infection, give him the medication...if he is doing fine with the discomfort on his own, than I would let the ear infection run its course.

I do not want to alarm you unnecessarily but my son also did not want to use a sippy cup and wanted someone to hold it for him. It had nothing to do with laziness. He is now 3.5 and we have learned that he is on the spectrum for Autism. Because he was my first child, I didn't recognize the signs I was getting. He's in programming now, but wish I could have started him a lot sooner.

I only say this because I'm learning that occupational things are frequently an issue with autistic children. If your son is on track developmentally and you don't have any concerns, just disregard my thoughts. I'm sure your son will start using that sippy cup when he's thirsty enough and no one is there to do it for him. However, if you have started having any concerns at all, you may want to have him screened for developmental issues. Your school district can get you started.

My daughter was the same way. She hated to drink out of a sippy cup all together. She had frequent ear infections and if she did drink, either out of a sippy cup or a straw, she would scream at the top of her lungs. Our doctor recommended that we just give her a big girl cup. The sucking motion that a child has to use when drinking from straw or sippy cup can be very painful because of the pressure it can add to the ear. If there is already fluid and pressure around the ear, it can be horribly painful. I am 25 and still have frequent ear infections and can speak from experience(drinking out of a straw that is). We let our daughter pick out her own special cup.
