My hangers never leave the closet. When clothes come off they stay in the closet and when it is time to hang the clothes up I bring the clothes to them.
I"m not managing the hangers very well. they seem to be all over the place when i don't need them and completely missing when i do. How do you keep track of yours? apparently it is getting on my nerves tonight as i try to get caught up on Mt Washmore.

Empty hangers get hung on a bar in the laundry room so they are there when it comes time to take the clothes out of the dryer.
I hung a bar in my laundry closet (not big enough to be a room) and keep them there.
When we take something off a hanger in our closet we put it in one section of the closet and then when I do laundry I just go grab them and take them to the laundry room. I usually leave a few in the closet just in case but most go to the laundry room.
I have a basket that we put all of our unused hangers in. In my closet, I have a section where I put hangers that have no clothes on them (when I wear a piece of clothing that was hanging, I put the hanger in this one spot). So, when it is time to iron every week, I know right where the available hangers are: either in my basket or in my closet in this one spot. Easy to find. Sometimes, I do have to rummage the children's racks in the laundry room. We keep all clothes in the laundry room, not in their bedrooms. My laundry room is about 20' x 30' with hanging racks (mounted on wall, not rolling) and their dressers. In the center of the room, we have a huge island with 5 separate laundry baskets, one each for whites, lights, darks, reds, towels/sheets. Makes laundry day so much more streamlined. (We have 8 in our family, so this is incredibly helpful to me!)
As we take the laundry down to the laundry room I simply take the empty hangers out of the closet ( off of the door knobs, where ever they have ended up) and take them down with me as I go. I have extra hangers so there are always empty ones down there...my OCD husband keeps them sorted, pants hangers together, plastic hangers together and the old metal type that HE prefers together...makes it super simple to grab what you want as you hang clothes from the dryer.
My hangers all stay where they are. And I have hangers for stuff that I hang to dry that stay on the rod near the washer/dryer. And LONG ago, I got rid of all the crappy wore hangers and replaced them with sturdy plastic types.
Have a basket in which you keep the hangers. I have everyone put the hangers in the basket when they are done with them.
