Have any of you had one? How did it work? How did it effect your life? How was the recovery period? Would you recommend it to someone. I am struggling, am on medication for high blood pressure, am pre-diabetic, and although I do try to get out and move, I have moderate arthritis in both knees do to a car accident as a teen, so many activities are out for me. I have 100+ pounds to lose. Do you think a lap band could help me?

Added: Just a note, I know how to lose weight, I have lost over 75 pounds, only to see it creep back on. I know even with the band the work is mine. I am really interested in hearing from those of you that have had one, or are close to someone who has, so I can know how your first hand experience was.

Thanks

So What Happened?

Thanks ladies. I think I will talk it over with my doctor before making any choice.

It could, but you could end up doing what my hubby's aunt did: She got a lap band, lost 145 lbs in about 3 months. However, as soon as she got to where she was comfortable again, she started eating and eating and completely undid what she accomplished. The absolute best thing you can do right now is eat right, move in whatever way you can, get plenty of sleep, and drink lots of water. Lay off the carbs, processed foods, sugar. Learn portion control. I guarantee you that as soon as a few pounds come off, you'll feel better and will be able to move better, thus helping your knees. This, in turn, will help the weight come off and you'll become the person you want and need to be--without surgery. Take it from me. I'm in the same boat you are and am doing it on my own.

Hi, I had the Lapband done a little over a year ago and I am very happy with my decision. It is the best thing I have ever done for myself. I wanted to lose 90lbs and I have lost 85lbs so far, I am almost there. The recovery period is nothing, I had it done on a holiday weekend so I could have a 4 day weekend and not miss any work, and I was back to work on Tuesday. The first couple of weeks you are basically on liquids and basically baby food. It gets a lot better and easier once you get use to what you are doing and the new amounts your stomach can handle. Don't get me wrong you still have to literally work your butt of to lose that weight, with diet and excerise but it pays off. I am very happy with myself and what I have done to be healthy. I highly recommend the lap band to anyone trying to lose weight!!

I cannot agree more with what Erica said. I have heard of SO MANY PROBLMES assiciated with lap band - the surgery goes wrong and they need another surgery, the person ruins the success (eating and eating, thus undoing the surgery/smaller stomach). So many complications usually always happens. I highly do NOT recommend this surgery! If you eat right and do whatever you are able to do for exercise (can you go for daily 30-minute walks?), you WILL lose weight and won't have to deal with all the complications involved in this risky surgery! Maybe you can join Weight Watchers? Best of luck!

Both my stepmom and I have toyed with the idea of lap bands, but after a lot of research, we decided it wasn't a miracle cure. You still have to watch what you eat carefully (even more so than without the band) and exercise. We figured, "if we have to be on such a strict diet with the band, why not be on one without the risks?". We've joined Weight Watchers and the weight is coming off slowly but surely.

I recently had knee surgery, and my orthopedist said that every extra pound above the waist equals 11-14 pounds of stress on your knees, so even losing a few pounds can really make a difference on those old knee joints!
