Hi moms, so my one year old has been waking up every two hours and cries for more than 15 mins then goes back to sleep. Every two hours! Coming from a baby who use to sleep 10-12 hrs a night. Now, how do you know if he's got an ear infection. I mean besides teething, he's got 11 teeth , he's never done this before, waking up every two hours. I say ear infection because my SIL didn't know her son had an ear infection and he was waking up all night screaming and crying. I just took my son to the dr last week tho, for a physical. I'm sure if he had one the dr would have told me right? How soon does an ear infection develop and could the dr of missed it during a his physical exam?

He's eating well, no fever, pooping fine, isn't fussy, he's not sick with the flu or anything. My only guess is the ear. Thanks

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

well my son slept great last night, did not wake up at all!! so now i don't know what to think. But lately, this week... separation anxiety has taken over. Now i'm thinking he wakes up at night, sees i'm not around and starts to cry. Because if i take him to our bedroom he sleeps and doesn't wake up. I've done that once and like i said, last night he slept all night.

Well, my daughter has had several ear infections and never showed any signs (wasn't pulling on her ear or complaining, no fever, no fussiness). They were always found at either a well visit or when she was at the doctor's office for something else. They can be missed if they are just starting or they can develop fairly quickly.

My daughter was once sick. I took her to the doctors and the doctor said it was viral...no infection. The next day she woke up even sicker. Took her back to the docs again ( less than 24 hours later) and she had a double ear infection. Ugh!

Take him back in and see if that's it specifically. My daughter complained about ear pain (she's 10) and it would only last for the evening and she would take a short nap and it would be gone. Finally I took her in the morning after something like that happened and the Dr. told me it was an "acute" ear infection. Basically, it's an infection that comes and goes but doesn't stick around. She got some drops and is told to put them in when it hurts. She has never had an ear infection in her life, until this. :)

If you suspect ear infection, definitely go to the doctor. We didn't know our son had one until his ear started leaking. We thought he was being needy for no clear reason in the middle of the night. Couldn't find a single thing wrong with him, other than the neediness. When he woke up with a leaking ear, we ended up in urgent care and felt horrible we hadn't been more comforting.

Is there something, a noise maybe, that happens about every two hours that you haven't noticed but could be waking your child?
Is he having two naps a day?
Maybe he should be having only one nap a day.

Sounds exactly like an ear infection and they can damage the ear so take him back to the doctor. He probably develped an ear infection since the doctor visit! But yes, I have also heard of doctors missing mild ones. Try giving him some tylenol if he wakes up tonight and get him in to be looked at. Poor baby!

Either his ear or maybe he has night terrors?

for my daughter, her only symptom would be crankiness. She just got a terrible ear infection this past week, and even though she's almost 4 and can tell me when it hurts, didn't until her eardrum almost burst. She would cry especially when she was laying down. For now, you could try propping him up to sleep (we gave our daughter a wedge pillow of her dads). I would make an appt for the doc first thing in the morning. Even if it's nothing, it's better to know.

I'd get his ears checked. Ear infections feel worse at night (when lying down) so that would be what I'd suspect....but I don't know that he'd go back to sleep in 15 mins......Is something waking him? Furnace, etc?
