I thought Kindergarten wasn't even mandatory? MD note? Too much control from the school for me, if in fact, that is policy.
Dear mums,
My daughter started kindergarten and unfortunately became sick just after 3 days. her teacher said she needs to bring a note from a doctor.
Usually I do not necessarily take her to a doctor (only when it is serious) but now I guess we would need to go every time just to get a note.
Did you always brought a note from a doctor when your child was sick? Please help me anyone who had experience with kindergarten.
Thanks!!!

I know that schools are trying to keep kids and staff healthy, but a Dr. Note all the time? My daughter never had to have a note from the Dr. if she missed time. I would talk to the teacher for clarification, talk to the prinicpal and read the parent hand book for the school. Good luck.

It's better to be safe than sorry because it affects her entire class. I am glad to see this is taking place.
I would ask your teacher if she plans on paying your medical bills. It's Kindergarten, for crying out loud! I would not take my daughter to the doctor for illnesses that I can treat on my own at home, which are most of them. Write your own letter and sign it "Doctor Mom." LOL
I just wanted to add that it would frustrate me to no end to have a teacher question my judgement on keeping my child at home if they are sick. Seriously. Would they prefer I send them in sick? You are the parent, and your word should be the final authority on your child. I don't think I would make a very good public school parent. LOL
I didn't read all of the other responses so forgive me if I duplicate an answer. If the child missed 3 or more consecutive days from school for an illness, they would need a doctor's note to return. Most employers require the same in the workplace. This is more to say that your daughter is no longer contagious.
Check to see what the district or school's handbook says. I think ours states that consecutive absences of three days or more require a doctor's note. If you don't have a handbook, call and ask the principal or assistant principal.
i know that when i was in school (middle high school when i remember) my mom needed a drs note because that is only when it is considered an excused absence even notes from mom were not considered excused
unless the absence is long term there should be no need for a note. I would talk to teacher, and if that does not help, the principal. All they should need is your word the child is sick. It would be a stupid waste of time and money to bring a child to the doctor for every cold!
I'd check the school policies. We don't need a note. I don't bring my child to a doctor for every cold, either. That's a waste of time and money.
For one day absence, she is asking for a note? I can understand 3 days or longer, but for less than that? I would say, um, sorry, I don't run them immediately to the doctor for every routine, mild childhood illness. I've never been asked for a note, even though my oldest daughter seems to run into to more than the average days out for illness or injury over the course of a year.
I would check the school handbook to find out if this is a state or school policy. I feel sorry for the teacher who has to ask for these. I'm thinking this rule was most probably not instituted at the teacher level, but that she is required to ask for it. If it is the policy, begin a the principal's level to express your opinion, and work your way up the administrative chain from there. Best of luck.
If you do not bring a note it will be considered an "unexcused absence" (not a big deal) .
Your child is allowed a few unexcused absence a year per school year. But if by the end of the year you have too many they will have the option of making your child repeat this grade.
I would not worry about it unless later in the year she ends up missing a lot of school.
I tutored a child who had missed so many days she was going to be held back.. The worst part was she was very behind in all subjects..
The school investigated and realized her mom was deeply depressed and made the her daughter stay home with her because she did not want to be alone. . Very sad situation.
lol I was a minute late 6 times in one year and got called into the principle. Its the way of schooling now. You can only have undocumented sick time or late time or they are required to pull you in and write you up. I'd get use to it.
It depends on your school system. Our system requires just a parent note. Some have an after so many days rule. I would check with your school nurse as to what the policy is.
Was she sick for just one day? What kind of sick? Sometimes if it's a matter of being infectious they want a note saying it's okay for them to return. One day of being sick shouldn't be an issue.
I would talk to the school secretary. They are usually amazing when it comes to clarifying things and answering such questions.
In California where I live, doctor notes aren't required, but my son got a blood infection and missed quite a bit of school and his dad and I got the standard letter regarding attendance and truancy. His teacher even came to see him in the hospital so no one thought we were faking it, but they are only allowed to miss so many days. Believe it or not, there are parents who let their kids miss school more than they attend just because they don't have it together. I'm not saying that's the case with you at all.
Clarify with the secretary because surely they can't expect a note for every illness if it's one day. You can rarely get an appointment the same day you need one anyway.
Best wishes.
How many days did she miss?
My daughter was in Pre-K last year and they wanted the same thing. A doctor's note. I mean come on, if your kid wakes up crying with a tummy ache, are you going to bring them to a doctor just to get a doctor's note for school?? My kids doctor doesn't want them in unless she seems concern about something or wants to be on the safe side and get them check out. Usually I call their doctor and explain rather she needs them to get check out or wait and see if they improve. Most times is something that just needs to run its course after a few days. Some of the schools is kinda crazy but I dont know what to say at the note thing... Call her doctor and explain whats going on and maybe they can just fax something to her school without your bringing her in to get check out. Hope your little one is doing better!! :)
Go to the principal with what she told you and if they really want a note then tell them they can pay your co-pay for the office visit! I can understand a note for an extended period but this sounds ridiculous to me!
I would call the school secretary and ask.
I had to this past year when my daughter had her wisdom teeth out, but that was a few days. I would find the rules in the handbook or from the office.
Diana:
How odd that they asked for a Doctor's note - was she running a high fever or a seriously red throat that the nurse THOUGHT might be strep?
Normally, we do not need to bring a doctors note in when my kids come home sick from school...again, like I said - unless the nurse thinks it's serious...
GOOD LUCK!!
that is totally crazy.
My daughter went to full-day kindergarten and got sick a few times, but I never had to give the teacher a doctor's note. I always had to call the school and let the school know that she was staying home sick, but they never asked for a doctor's note. Strange...definitely clarify with the school office and the teacher as to why a doctor's note would be necessary for a normal sickness.
yes that is standard if she is missing more then one day. if she is having a cold send her to school. my daughter is in preschool and is only allowed 10 excused days for the whole year. what i do with my daughter is this. i give my daughter a 500mg vitamin c every morning with her regular vitamins.
My daughter started kindergaten last week, she ended up waking up with a fever and just not feeling well at all on Thursday so I called her in (it's set up to leave a message). When I dropped her off the next day her teacher commented that she was missed yesterday and I said, yeah, she woke up with a fever and she said it was a good thing I kept her home then. Never heard of needing a doctors note, maybe it's just to give an all clear that they're ok to go back? Still, I think mine just needed to extra rest to ride it out, she was feeling better by the middle of the day. If we would have gotten all ready and out to go to the doctor then who knows, doesn't make much sense.
