We just put the crib mattress on the floor. When she stayed on that and stopped rolling off, we put her in a twin bed.
Is there a size between a crib mattress and a twin mattress? When transitioning from a crib to a big girl/boy bed - is that a twin mattress? For some reason I thought there would be a kids size mattress but all I'm finding is twin sizes. Thanks for your help!

Toddler beds use the crib mattress. I say save your money and get a twin neither of my boys stayed in a toddler bed very long.
Yes, toddler beds use the crib mattress and twin beds are longer than the crib mattress. Some people call the toddler bed a big boy bed because it doesn't have the 4 sides like a crib. I put both my kids from crib to twin and called them big girl/boy beds.

nope. twin is it. Amazing how much bigger a twin bed is!
There is something that used to be called a Hollywood bed. We have two
window seats that use this. Also I easily got a frame for one as an extra bed in a small bed room. Ask at a big store like Sit and Sleep. It is smalled than a
twin, but OK for adults if they are not too fat. They ;make a nice day bed or
substitute for a sofa that can be used by guests.
I slept on such a bed for years as a young adult and to this day I sleep to the very edge of the bed. My husbands teases me about this.
Probably because of this, I can't stand sleeping in a king sized bed.
There are cribs, toddler beds that use the crib mattress and twins.
Check IKEA. They have these extendable beds. As wide as a twin but shorter, then you can add the extension pieces in as you need the length. Comes in 3 pieces and I think that there are two styles and a few different colored frames to choose from.
Here's a link. They don't depict the mattress well, online.

I've seen them on craigslist from time to time as well, if you're looking to save a buck.
