Does anyone have any experience with Kidney stones during pregnancy? I just recently gave birth to my second daughter. At 30 weeks, it was discovered that I had a large Kidney stone, they had to put a Nephrostomy tube in to drain my kidney. I am now finding that after having the stone taken care of and the tube gone that I am still getting pains in my back area. Anyone have any ideas or thoughts on this? Ive checked with my Urologist and they have checked lab work and all is negative for infection at this point.

What can I do next?

My natural path doc recomends drinking 1/2 cup extra virgin organic olive oil and 1/2 cup organic apple cidar vinegar or(lemon juice) mixed together directly RIGHT BEFORE BED, and then sleep on your left side for the night. That should make any stones pass. It doesn't tasted the greatest but it's do-able..... And it's non-invasive and HEALTHY!

Ahhh, the joy of kidney stones :) I started getting kidney stones during my 2nd pregnancy, and 18 years later, I still get them. It is possible that you have another stone - just because there is no infection/blood, doesn't mean there isn't one. My doctor told me that some people are at higher risk during pregnancy and up to 6 months after.

I would consider making an appointment with your dr. to get the referral for another scan or IVP to see what is going on. Another possibility is that there is scar tissue from the previous stone(s) causing pain. I have had this happen as well.

Good luck!

H.-
I had kidney stones during my second pregnancy....I thought I had a constant bladder infection, and then eventually passed several large stones. My OBGYN made it seem like it wasn't a big deal, and that it would clear up after I gave birth. Well, that was almost two years ago, and I have been having on-going trouble since. I finally have gotten everything worked out, but I was miserable the whole time! Here is my advice--go to a urologist, someone who specializes in kidney stones. I actually see a P.A. at Metro Urology who is in their kidney stone clinic, and he has helped me to sort it out. Next, be careful with your birth control choice. I had an IUD and then was on the pill, and both of those choices wreaked havoc with my body. Lastly, make sure you are drinking a ton of water, and have someone give you a full renal panel test, checking your citrate, oxalate and sodium levels. I am guessing that you probably need to increase your citrate level, and lower your oxalate and sodium. You will probably need to go on a medicine called Urocit-K, which is a citrate supplement. The bottom line is this--if you constantly feel like you have a bladder infection, have back pain, have had a history of stones, then you need to see someone. Kidney disease isn't fun, and getting your citrate/oxalate/sodium levels balanced is the first step to avoiding it! Good luck!

H., I have had kidney stones before but not during pregnancy. You poor thing that must have hurt sooo bad. But as for the pain now you will probily have that for a few months after. And I'm assuming your breast feeding other wise the doctor would have you on some kind of pain killers. But with all the muscels in the area copeing with the baby it may take awhile for things to get back to normal. If you can handle the pain working out the area the back, stomach areas can help. Also I found heating pad helps alot. This is truely a hard time to deal with that also. Try to see if you can get as much help you can with the kids and try to get enough rest. My thoughts are with you! Good Luck!

This may be totally unrelated, but maybe not. Have your Dr. take a blood sample to do a PTH test, which is sometimes checked during annual physicals. 2 yrs. ago after a routine physical blood testing, I was told that my calcium levels were high but nothing to be concerned about, but that I could be prone to kidney stones. I had never had a kidney stone before. One wk. after the testing I started having side cramps, back pain, etc., that wouldn't go away. After going to the ER 3 times in one wk., an MRI showed a kidney stone. The only thing that would relieve the horrible pain in the ER, was Toradol (sp?)which worked instantly. The kidney stone was removed vaginally. Also an MRI of my parathyroid glands (there are 4) showed a tumor (benign) on one. That parathyroid was removed & I've had no kidney stones since. Blood tests now show normal PTH levels. The parathyroid glands regulate the amount of calcium that goes into parts of your body. If one or more glands are not working properly it allows too much calcium, resulting in a kidney stone.

This might not apply to pregnancy kidney stones but it might be worth mentioning to your Dr..

Here's some advice that was given to me by both my father (before he passed away) and my sister. Both of them suffer with this problem. Their Urologist's are some of the leading Dr. in their fields in Minneapolis.
Watch what you eat and drink. There are two basic types of stones. One is formed when you body can't break down the calcium in your body and the other is from some of the minerals that we get from the water we drink.
Many of the things that we eat other than milk products contain calcium. You'll have to do a web search for those and I think you'll be surprised at how many there are. Since pregnant women consume more calcium than normal, you may have had a calcium stone. Now the water that we all drink does contain minerals that our local purification systems can't remove, and again watch what you eat there too. To help with this one, my sister's doctor told her to start drinking more bottled water, and to watch that they're not the kind that have added this or that, and to cut back on the diet pop that she drinks. Also watch your sodium intake which will dry you out in different ways. All of these thing will help to prevent the forming of kidney stones. My own doctor also told me that we all have stones in our kidneys it's just some of us produce more than others and they get knocked off of the little shelf like things that are in our kidneys. I haven't passed a stone in a long time but I know when I'm about ready to pass what they call "sand". They don't hurt as much as a stone but do hurt when they first start out.

I have never had kidney stones but my husband has had problems but ever since he found this solution he hasn't had any problems. You drink 3 ounces olive oil with 3 ounces lemon juice. It will taste gross but it broke up his stones and he has never had to go back to the hospital. If he feels pain in his kidney area he drinks that and nothing develops.

I had the same thing happen to me just a few weeks ago (i gave birth 12/2). found out i had a stone on 1/10 (went to the ER) spent the night at riverside then early that morning had surgery to have it "blasted" with a laser. Mine was an 8mm stone. While under they put a stint in (from my kidney to my bladder and all the way down). i've had it out (the stint for a week and 2 days and i am just starting to get rid of the back pain. how long has the tube been out?

I definitely have pregnancy kidney stone experience...
Kidney stones only make problems while I am pregnant. They started at 30 weeks with both pregnancies. I had a stent with the first pregnancy which was extremely PAINFUL!!! And with the 2nd pregnancy I was very close to getting a nephrostomy tube (I refused another stent). After getting my stent removed, the next day I felt the same back pain... it turned out to be another stone. There is a good chance that you have another stone, you would need a CT or something to check, labs won't be able to tell that.
I am planning another pregnancy and know that I have many stones in my kidneys that arn't causing problems, so I will be getting them removed surgically before getting pregnant again. Your stone could pass on it's own, but you don't want to get an infection... Good Luck!!

I had kidney stones with my second child at about 18 weeks.
Oh my gosh it was horrible. I had a stent in which was extremely painful. I remember after giving birth and after having the stent removed I would have back pains. I would panic and think oh no not again. But I have not had any stones since.

However after my fourth child I had back pain for about 8 months. That was because with her I had back labor. The pain was in my lower back . I always have a seperated pubic bone due to pregnancy. This causes back pain and hip pain for me. Just remember pregnancy stretches and moves alot of your body parts. It sometimes takes quite awhile to return to somewhat normalcy. But always check with your doctor.

Good Luck

H. - I feel your pain. I had Kidney Stones with my first preg. - stint for 5 months of that pregnancy and gal stone with my second - had that removed 6 weeks after delivery. I would encourage you to see a Urologest. The stones could definately be back.

Good luck!
