Do you get it trimmed? Taking off the unhealthy parts of the hair can make it comb a lot easier. Or at least in my experience it has.
Hi Moms,
My five year old DD has very long hair down past her waist. I love her hair and so does she but of course can't stand it when we have to comb it out...All you Mama's with daughters know this...Tangles galore...My Mom commented the other day that my DD's hair was looking dull. I am not surprised because I use so much adult conditioner and that is probably the culprit. What do you use that keeps your kid's hair shiny and helps with the tangles??? I already use a conditioner and leave-in detangler and conditioner as well. She gets her hair washed about 2X-3X a week...In the summer maybe more.
Yes she gets regular hair trims...About every 7-8 weeks. I just don't want her hair to be dull.

I use my shampoo and conditioner on my 3 year old daughter. I only use a dime size amount of conditioner. That stuff goes a long way. If you still have tangle troubles...buy some detangling spray.
I had the same thing with my daughter and myself. I went to Ulta a few months ago and asked what they recommended. She recommended this stuff called It's a Ten - Miracle. And let me tell you - it IS a miracle. We both have Medusa type tangles when our hair is wet and you spray this stuff in (which is like a cream) and the comb goes right through it. I have never seen such a wonderful product and believe me, I've been trying to find one my whole life. It does 10 things - detangles, adds shine, protects against heat and others that I can't remember. It is costly, but well worth it. You don't have to use that much of it either. As far as I know, they sell it at Ulta, but I don't know where else. I have looked online to see if I could find it cheaper, but no dice. Go online and read the reviews about it - nobody gives it less than five stars. It's the best stuff out there.
could be the brush you are using to get the tangles out. I have always had great hair (shiny and naturally jet black in color) I 'pick' my hair with the conditioner its detangled, then rinse...in the morning, I use a pick (not a brush or comb).
May help to get layers too. Personally I use Panteen products and have always had great luck with shine and no split ends.
I only wash my DD hair 3xs per week. I use regular conditioner and leave some in. I make sure to braid her hair in a loose braid before bed time. I've also heard that a silk pillow case works well - less breakage. Make sure she gets regular trims too - split, broken ends tangle easier. You could do a "leave in" hair treatment once a week on the weekends, let it set then wash it out. She would feel like she was at the spa! paint her nails while her hair treatment sets!
normal products are really hard on hair if you wash daily. Garnier makes a new natural sulfate free line that may help, but you can just check labels, it's the sulfates in shampoo that cause the dull look.
I like the leave in conditioner by Paul Mitchell, it only takes a few drops and hair is shiny and tangle free. I have baby fine hair, often called 'frog fur' by stylists. My daughters both have enough hair for 3 heads. I always wanted looong hair but my hair just wouldn't grow much past my shoulders. So my daughters both had very long hair as girls. One thing I learned was to brush the hair before I washed it and to use a large tooth comb on wet hair. Start at the bottom of the hair and work your way up to the top, to prevent breakage, wet hair is much more fragile than dry hair. I would also put the long hair in braids, pig tails, full or half ponytails to help with the tangles, for day to day activities.
Both my daughters (5 and 3) have really long hair and I find that if Dad washes it(in a pinch), its usually a tangled mess, but if i do it combs out fairly well. I think it is becuase I am careful to tip their heads straight back and not muss it too much while washing. He piles it all on top of their heads and scrubs it like hes trying to get fleas out or something. I just massage the scalp first and gently work through the rest of the hair. I use tear free shampoo becuase it can run, but I also use grown up conditioner. I wash and condition hair first, then let the conditioner set in their hair while washing and rinsing their bodies. Those few minutes really help. Also. while you rinse, use your fingers to gently comb through the hair. When you do comb, use a wide toothed comb- i have one that has long, wide teeth that are curved toward each other on it, it goes through hair like butter. I always take small sections and start from the bottom, work up. Works for my girls-- also helps to put on some cartoons so they don't notice and complain so much :) Good luck!

One of my daughter's also has very long hair and it has taken me up to 45 minutes to comb in our after a bath some days. My sister has been bugging me forever to try this Fredric Fekkai (sp?) glossing cream forever but I was hesitant because I thought it would make my daughter's hair greasy. (my sister has very dry hair) I finally caved and used it for the first time the other day and it is a MIRACLE WORKER! Just a tiny bit totally makes dry or wet tangled hair easily comb-able (is that a word??) within 10 minutes. Since we've only been using it a couple days I don't know about the long term build up or anything but I'm loving it right now and love not having to use all the conditioner, spray detanglers, etc. Give it a try!! :)
What finally works in our house is a round soft bristle brush. My daughter has thin/thick straight hair and if you even breathe on her hair she will say OW!! It not only helps the tangles, the shine, but she brushes her hair herself. And, trust me this was a long awaited blessing. I think Revlon sells some for $6?
We use Koala Pals Shampoo and Envia leave-in/spray conditioner to help with detangling. My daughter had long beautiful hair which at the moment she wants to grow out like Rapunzel's.
I use Aveeno baby wash and shampoo combo on my 5yr old. Then I just use my conditioner on her (regular store stuff, nothing fancy, it varies).
it's the leave-in detangler, stop using it.
I don't know the answer but what if you call a beauty school and ask what they would recommend?
I use normal shampoo and conditioner on our kids hair. When the conditioner is in the girls hair I use a wide tooth comb or a brush and get the tangles out then rinse all the conditioner out. I never use the leave in stuff. Hair is so much easier to deal with when it is clean and wet.
Unntil about 7 years ago, my hair was to my waist. I use the Prosante line only because there are no chemicals, and to brush or comb out I found the gentlest on my scalp and theirs was to start at the bottom and work up to the scalp. I also started with a wide-toothed comb and stayed away from brushes - my hair is extremely curly.

Hope it helps
We use Suave 2 in 1 for kids they wash rinse then i'll put my conditioner in their hair I like to use something that is for hydration for my thick hair & theirs let it sit in while they play & so for it works to help with the tangles I try to use my wide tooth comb to help comb the hair before they rinse out the conditioner if not afterwards don't use a brush to comb out wet hair it will strip the hair causing breakage & split ends use a wide tooth comb, maybe it is time for a few inches to be cut off you can't grow pretty healthy hair with all the damages it has (if you've already trimmed it then switch your shampoo & conditioner to what her hair is needing)
My other favs are Pantene shampoo & conditioner or Dove.Seen your update that she doesn't wash everyday,& has regular haircuts. The only thing I would try is making sure her diet is good, keep her well hydrated, stop using a brush,if you have to blow dry her hair have it far away from her head as possible & the heat setting on low,if she is able to air dry in the evening the better then recomb before bed time gather her up put in a lose pony.It could aslo be the weather change the sun hitting her hair that is making it look dull.My mom says olive oil treatments is good for healthy hair not just for dry itchiness, maybe put some in a spray bottle after a shower & spray her hair down wrap in a towel for 10-15 then rinse do that a few times & see how it turns it
I have really long hair and had long hair most of my life. To top it all off my hair is super thick(to dry my hair it takes about 40 min), so tangles and combing through my hair is not fun at all. My mother was a beautican and always told me to switch my shampoo and conditioner every six weeks. That does help. I would ask the person who cuts her hair what she would suggest, since she is use to your daughters hair. Aussie three min miracle works really well. I also like Pual Mitchell super skinny serum. good luck!
Have you tried rinsing it with white vinegar? I remember having it done when I was a child. It takes out the products.
